FF Newbie Plays Crisis Core

The short answer is that PS2 emulation is complicated and Dirge of Cerberus would require a unique game fix hack or other plugin to make it work well on most computers. So far, nobody with the skill and interest is yet to write up such a plugin for the game.

You will notice in places that even on console the game will sometimes suffer from frame drops. Places like the Shera (Chapter 7) and any area with lots of particle effects and explosions will make the game lose frames. This makes precision gameplay more difficult, so aiming in certain segments becomes way harder because of the frame drops. So my assessment is that Dirge of Cerberus is uniquely optimized for the PS2 but will show performance cracks even on original hardware if you know where to look.

You are the expert on Dirge so I most certainly believe you in that regard. :monster:

That sucks though, damn. It's a game definitely enjoyed best through playing.

I remember when I got my PS2 emulator working, FFXII was the game I was specifically trying to play (as my save file was on an HDD from my YLOD'd PS3). Then I tried Xenosaga, and then Dirge was the third game I tried and

In my case, the screen was split right down the middle. The left side rendered perfectly, and the right side was a psychedelic mess.
Fortunately my PS2 does still work

Like Makoeyes987 said, I definitely recommend watching a playthrough of Dirge of Cerberus without commentary when you are watching it for the first time. Assuming you don't opt for playing it on console yourself.

Every Dirge of Cerberus longplay/"full-movie" upload out there has its pros and cons, but here is the one I'd recommend:
- 9h 11m longplay by RickyC, 1080p 60fps

There are uploads out there that on the surface look more crisp and shiny, but in the end showcase more emulation flaws and also mute- or completely cut out the sections at the end that include Gackt's music. The video linked above doesn't showcase the most skilled of gameplay and can be frustrating to watch, but at least it gives you a good look at the gameplay environments and not just the story. It also, thankfully, doesn't mute Gackt's music. :monster:

Honestly, I've never even played Dirge, I actually have it, bought it when it came out, and have a ps2 still connected to my tv, but I just could not be bothered, gave up after 30 minutes I think.
While there is some lore there that might become useful for Remake, and yes, there is one location specifically linked to Dirge, I honestly wonder if it's really worth going through.

But like I said, I haven't played it, so I really can't judge.

I swear, I've scoured this area. I've gone into the weird lifestream portal, opened all the doors (except the one that needs all of the Goddess materia), collected all the items, killed everything ad nauseum. I've read the loveless stones and opened / interacted with everything I can see.

Unless if there's another area which is hidden away, I'm stumped. I'll go back to the central area and have a look around, but man, the sheer amount of random encounters you need to wade through to simply get to an area which mightn't even lead to anything is infuriating.

Think I need a break until tomorrow.
