I think this trailer of FFIX is a good. The PS4 remaster one is legit.

I know this a remaster, but this looks gorgeous for a Ps1 game.

And I'm gonna show you FFVIII's original trailer because it was one of the most badass and intense FF trailers back in the day. This game got me hyped.

The main thing I got from this trailer is gun swords. Cool.
Blonde short hair guy kinda reminds me of Rufus lol.
Definitely very hype.
FFIX and FFVIII were some of Nobou Uematsu's best work in the FF series too. The music's incredible. FFVII is of course incredible but like I said, FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX were like, the golden age of Squaresoft's PSone days and Uematsu was in his prime, lol
He's set VERY high expectations after the FF7 soundtrack.

If you get it on PC, I am playing through the upscaled graphics mod for Steam and it’s... it looks like it came out yesterday.

And this thing was a beastttt for PS1, battles took forever to load.

And Mako lol don’t say the guide is mandatory, this guy is playing FF7 again *right away* he deserves a story-focused first run of FF9 too. I’m sure he’ll play it twice too :P

FFIX will literally have you missing like half of your character's abilities and skills if you just play straight through normally. Nevermind having to know who to steal one-of-kind stuff from because everything in that game requires you to steal it from somebody first.

You legit need a guide if you don't want to get crubstomped in disc 4 when the game difficulty spikes hard. It's not an easy FF at all, it's actually challenging. You could have Zidane, Vivi, and Steiner missing like half their weapons and skills cause all their gear is just scattered and locked away once you progress.

Story or not, it's a game first and you'd legit handicap yourself playing IX with zero guide on what to do. It's not new player friendly at all. Yeah, you can play without a guide if you want to miss 60% of what you need to survive and then get curbstomped lol

There are 30 pieces of gear, not rare treasure but gear, that are able to be missed just by moving forward and not knowing the game won't let you buy it ever again. And FFIX is a game where characters learn their abilities and stuff from the equipment they acquire. So if you miss that weapon, armor or accessory, then you miss the chance of getting your character to unlock their full potential and abilities that help them fight. A black mage with no Tier 3 magic is lol.

Oh for Pete’s sake it’s just like FF7, if you grind to a high level you can show up to the final boss naked.

No you can't.

FFIX's final boss is not easy lol. And who would want to grind to level 80 to just beat the final boss?

The final boss of IX is no joke cause you ain't gonna be able to just curbstomp and tank their ultimate ability with no consequence.

To even have a chance to survive it and not just die, you need the abilities that protect against negative status effects.

Which you only acquire and learn from gear.

Which is gear that can be missed. :monster:

There are no ribbons in IX, and it will hit you with every random status effect possible which includes "Death." Debuffs matter in that game.

Here's a question for everybody:
Who do you think to be the main villain of FF7? Sephiroth, Jenova, Hojo or someone else?

It totally is.

That's not supposed to be known until it happens. That's never known in-story or advertised anywhere. You should tag that.

I agree that IX is harder than VII, but I still beat it as a teenager without a guide, lol.
The major thing I missed originally was the existence of Synth Shops, but given that he's going to be effectively liveblogging his playthrough to us, I don't think he has to worry about missing that.

And why do you keep acting like the Octagon Rod is hidden? It's in the shop of a town you are required to go to :monster: And even if you do somehow miss that, you can buy it as soon as you get an airship.

It's gone forever upon entering the Shimmering Isle. Several weapons are like that. Yeah, you can get it early, but if you don't know that Esto Gaza exists because you never explored the map or you decide to wait to buy stuff from there because you're broke and think you can backtrack to get it you can't.

There is a very real reason "FFIX" and "missable items" turns out the highest amount of results in google for an FF game. People have been talking about that issue in IX for ages. It trips people up a lot.

Hojo is more "because Hojo the antagonist exists"

which is why i came up with a term for character's like Hojo. a Keystone Character. who which, if they never entered the plot. the main story would never have turned out that way. In FF7's case, the antagonist would not exist (at least not in that form). From what I've seen they're almost never the BBEG, but often the reason the BBEG is big, bad, and evil. If they even exist at all without the keystone character.

I'm not sure if Gast is the keystone character for FF7 or the compilation as a whole. Hojo and Gast seem to be keystone character's depending on the game.

Hollander being the Keystone character of Crisis Core. without him manipulating Genesis. CC is different or has no antagonist, thus would have no struggle to tell it's story with

with another example of a keystone character in media being
Littlefinger. without him much of the story of GoT and ASOIAF doesn't happen the same way. If at all. and potentially means there really isn't any story to tell. Beyond the weather getting a bit cold later.

Just out of interest, how did some of you initially find out about FF7 or FF in general?

As (most likely) a younger user here, I found out about FF7 through a guy on YT called Maximilian Dood, who cited it as his favourite game of all time.

Back in 2001 my brother downloaded 7,8, and 9. I tried them all and got obsessed with 9 specifically and Final fantasy in general,9 is still my favorite game of all time.
Over the years I started appreciating 7 more and more as well as I started to understand it better.

Here's a question for everybody:
Who do you think to be the main villain of FF7? Sephiroth, Jenova, Hojo or someone else?

Most likely still Sephiroth, he's iconic so I don't see them changing that.

What I want to know though is, did you manage to get Cloud laid?

I've always enjoyed that Hojo was both the cause (Sephiroth) and the solution (Cloud; also Vincent and to some extent Red) to all the world-ending problems :awesomonster:

My second playthrough is definitely aiding in my understanding of FF7. A lot of things that should've been rather obvious are becoming clearer.

I find this is true for a lot of FFs/JRPGs. FFXIII was notorious for not explaining itself, so that really benefits from seeing it again. And FFX takes on a whole other flavor after seeing the ending.
I'm so glad you're enjoying it :)
