Eh, watched this chapter last night.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...

I mean, I was dreading/looking forward for this scene, but I wasn't prepared.
  • Biggs. Period. Fucking hell...
  • Wedge! Shit!!!
  • Jessie... *ugly sobbing*

Okay, the other things:
  • Rude having an instant crush on Tifa, lol.
  • The hand-helicopter henchmen. So glad that they kept it.
  • Dread and trepidation throughout all the chapter. Been some time since I felt that way with a game.
  • Tseng is... different. He's full on ice man now.
  • Pyramid!!!!!!!! Hell yeah!!
  • Reno having a conscience.

Now, for the other thing:

When Aerith hugged Marlene there was a change in the screen, kiiiinda like when Jenova messes up with Cloud's memories, but not quite. My theory, and please have in mind I'm yet to watch the entire game:

Aerith says in previous chapters that the future is not set on stone, right? What if she has the power, through her actions, to alter the course of things, and those ghosts have the power to also alter it? She cured Wedge, yet the ghosts trapped him when he went back for his cats so he would be crushed. She got Marlene to trust her. Maybe that wasn't supposed to happen but the ghosts couldn't prevent it that time?

Maybe this is a contest of wits between two time-altering beings? Uhmm...

I knew that was going to be a rough one, but damn. ;_;

I will echo what others said about the plate fall. I will forgive Tseng not flying up into a falling plate, but the music choice at the end during the fall was quite odd. It was the only big action set-cutscene that hasn't had a track for it so far. I wonder if Square was trying to get the rights to use The Creation for this scene and wasn't able to? It feels like something was supposed to play over the music that was already playing before.

Underrated moment was Rude during the boss battle. I was controlling Tifa and noticed that Rude did NOTHING to her at all. I'm so glad that Square is picking up on the small little things like that and bringing it back to the Remake.

There are already a few things that have been spoiled for me in this game (unfortunately, a bit of the ending), but I'm glad I've had one surprise left for me - Cait Sith! I was kinda expecting him or the Mog to be in the game, but not this early in the game or during his weird debut here. That was something only OG fans are going to get out of that appearance, I'm sure to newbies that's going to be a "wtf" moment due to what's going on. If that was supposed to be a hint to connect Cait Sith and Reeve together, then I don't think it quite worked out the way Square wanted it to. Reeve looking at the plate himself would've been much better for strengthening his role in the story this early into the FFVII plot (which honestly, needed more work in the original). He's only been in one scene at this point in the game IIRC.

Great chapter, but a few odd issues.

Since we are on the same topic, the plate aftermath scene in the park in Chapter 13 was fantastic btw.

EDIT: On that note, I need to start the countdown for "Kate Sith" being the incorrect way of saying Cait Sith from here on out. I know its Ket Shee or something, but until it's officially spoken, it's Kate Sith to me.

God it was so weird.....music has been a strong positive point of this game. Like, it's so incredibly amazing, by the time platefall happens, you are expecting something amazing. And then that plays.

I feel really bad for complainin about the Cait Sith scene too. I am 100% sure that they put that in thinking of the oldcomers, just wanting to give them something beyond Midgar, but damn.....that scene should not have been there

It's not bad per say. And Cait Sith showing up was, thankfully, very brief so it doesnt tank the scene. But, everything music wise the game had completely went above and beyond, and something so huge as the platefall, you'd assume that's one scene they went through and through to make it amazing aswell. I mean, one of the biggest moments of the game and you dont have a special track for it, in a 8disc OST? It's a bit strange tbh

Listen closely, there is meaning in my words.

The continuation of the escape-action music after they make it to the zip line and the plate falls is the only real criticism for the scene. It doesn't quite fit. But the music that comes during the aftermath was spot on. Overall the entirety of the moment is still captured, but the music could have easily been better, especially in matching the utter despair and despondency of Cait Sith as he witnesses the collapse himself.

Simply chilling. This whole chapter was intense and sad and still leaves a lasting impression, even now. The fights were incredible and the deaths got me truly choked up, and I just needed that last moment to shine ... and Barret gave it all. That's all I wanted. That's all I needed. Perfect.

Yeah, that was a tough one to get through. For some reason the scene between Aerith and Marlene hit me really hard. It was also very tough to see our friends go, but man... They did an amazing job of making you want to annihilate the Shinra corporation. I was afraid that Shinra would come off as goofy (I despise the Turks depiction in Advent Children), but no way. These are evil people who deserve anything that happens to them.

Evil people, Smoothie? How can they be evil when Reno feels a twinge of conscience and Rude's 'hand slips' so Tifa won't get shot?
:desucait:

(I feel kind of bad about this, but I just wanted the Jessie death scene to be over so I could get to the platform and fight the Turks. I find her the least endearing of the three. Her spunky cutesiness is over the top. I like her best when she's kissing her grenades before using them to blow some jobsworth Shinra flunkey to smithereens. Biggs I really love, though. Such a thoroughly decent chap.)

Ha, I hear you. I was mainly thinking of President Shinra when I said that but even the Turks knew that what they were doing wasn't right and did it anyway. Also, Rude saw a hot girl that he's never met before and stopped Reno from killing her. He's not in love he's just horny!

In all seriousness, I thought the callback to Rude crushing on Tifa was wonderful. Nice touch.

Hi folks! Finally got through this chapter yesterday. My impressions on this one:

... Overall, unlike most folks here, I didn't really like the execution of this chapter (unfortunately). I think the problem for me is that it really failed to convey any sense of urgency. The only moment where you actually feel you have to act and think fast is when you're (literally) on the clock to escape the top of the tower. Everybody seemed to be taking their sweet time about anything.

- I mean, I understand the idea of giving the Avalanche trio a 'proper send off', but IMO it lingered way too long. I personally would have preferred something a lot more brutal and direct, with little time for goodbyes. To me it 'softened the blow' way too much, and also gave people the wrong priorities (look, I'd love to stay here and chat, but I have to prevent the destruction of a pillar, here). I would have been more emotionally engaged if I had happened to just 'find' Biggs and Jessie among the anonymous corpses of those who had fought.

- I thought a bit that way about the Aerith / Marlene cutscene too (come one, you can talk once you've reached safety, not before), but then there's the realization that the Plate is not going to drop before Tseng has finished his business, so I guess that's ok.

- I also thought they had missed a big chance to fix that very clunky scene about Barret, Cloud and Tifa escaping with a zipline... back when playing the OG, my fridge logic was "well they can't be on the zipline if the pillar that holds the zipline together is being destroyed!". Seeing the scene playing out the same way 23 years later didn't do well for my suspension of disbelief.

- Some positive, though: I personally liked a lot how the Turks were portrayed in this chapter. I poked some fun when Reno tries to shred Cloud with the helicopter gatling saying 'nothing personal' while it was obviously completely personal. Rude's "hand-slip" was an interesting nod, although I felt it was awkward for him to do that after having seen Tifa for a whole... 2 seconds!? I really liked Tseng's icy demeanor and presence - maybe not everyone's taste but I really enjoyed this characterization. His interaction with Aerith was very interesting.

- I also appreciated the emphasis on an evacuation effort (Aerith rescuing Betty was a nice touch), which was absent in the OG and here, it makes sense.

- Oh, and I personally liked Cait Sith's cameo. And it IS tested and confirmed: the friend with whom I'm sharing the playthrough, who is a complete newcomer to FFVII, was all "WTF!?" when he saw it.

... and that's it from me! A shame that it's probably the chapter I least enjoyed (not for the right reasons, at least), but eh, nothing to significantly dampen how much I'm enjoying the game overall.

For what it's worth I felt exactly the same way, only I assumed there was something wrong with my sound because even the music didn't seem to express urgency.
