Round 9: Dante's Beak

Notes from the Dungeon Master:

  • NEXT MODULE:Well guys, the people have spoken. As you know I've been having you vote for the past few rounds on which Mod you wanted to do next. It is time to unveil the winner!

Rubies on Rails - Set in FF8 during the war between Esthar and Galbadia, your job will be to stop a train robbery. Thieves are plundering the goods of Deling City known as The Rubies of the Unknown King and with most of the military off at war, it's easy pickings. The Module is set in Deling City and will grant you access to The Tomb of the Unknown King, D-District Prison, Timber and several trains.

The Third Module will be The Lord Manor Heist and the Fourth will be Sport of Kings.

That was one heck of a nap Yakumo Van Winkle. Your friends are currently in the fight of their life down at the bog and I'm sure they could use an extra set of hands. It's a wee bit risky, but I'm going to use the Ragnarok's Teleporter to lob you straight into the fight! Hold onto your lunch!

You feel a sudden whirring sensation in your stomach, which unfortunately doesn't remain contained as you find your very essence whipping through space time. You reappear right in the midst of the fray, atop a Ridge overlooking the onslaught, right next to the temporarly distracted Valerie and Nukan who just let off a shot.

Velkamos saw the emboldened chocobos rush to their aid once the hatchling snakes were killed and, before he had time to react, one of them finished off the giant snake with a rather savage blow to its head. He was torn between surprise and disappointment that a chocobo had killed the snake instead of him. Didn't get to finish my hunt properly, he muttered inwardly.
Then again, the chocobo eater was knocked onto it's back and now in a vulnerable position, thanks to the other two chocobos. And still alive, he added, gripping his weapon. He could be healed later, right now he had to take advantage of the situation and fight.
He leaped onto the chocobo eater's exposed stomach and gave it a good stab with his scythe.

[Wait, no Poison Damage or HP gain?

Next module...yay!

Also, out of curiousity, would Poison have worked on the Zolom?]

Shard regained his feet as a horde or angry birds descended on Snake and Chocobo Eater, clawing the snake to death before fleeing. The Chocobo Eater took the fall hard, so he charged with the spear before it could recover, hoping to kill the thing before he had to take another hit.

ATTACKED CHOCOBO EATER.

Shit. Lost the plot on that one. C.E. will take double poison damage next round and the 10 HP has been restored even though for some reason I failed to restore it on your stats. And for the Zolom, none of the enemies in the first module have stat resistance so it would have had the same 50% poison chance inherent to Bio (Bio2 and 3 have a 75% and 100% poison chance barring any resistance, FYI. )

Yakumo groaned audibly, but before the sound completely escaped his lips, he could feel himself being transported away from the Chocobo Farm. In an instant he was within the Eater's Lair, and he immediately threw up on arrival. With his body still recovering from the final remnants of poison, that sudden bending of space and time was just a little too much.

Realising the danger, Yakumo quickly took in his surroundings and took stock of the situation, seeing that one of their allies was weakened by the battle. Focusing on the materia orb within his bow, the nausea began to subside as he called forth the soothing radiance of his Cure materia. Glancing at Shard, he sent the wave of magic towards him.

"Hold on. That should help."

<This may be getting a revival sometime after Christmas. The plans I'm working on will be to give a story wrap-up to Module 1 and then have you all launch straight into Module 2: Ruby On Rails. I will also be looking into simplifying the interface a bit and will be coming up with a brief survey to kind of gauge the areas I should improve upon.

Please leave any comments, particularly constructive criticism below and - hopefully - we'll launch the next module before the new year.>

(Bump!

I never had time to comment on this back in December. Wanted to say that if you do start this back up again, I'm totally on board with it. :) I had a lot of fun and would love to do it again. I rather liked the easy going appeal of how this was set up, but at the same time I know some people participating didn't always come by for the new 'rounds', and sometimes iirc it would take quite a while for the story to progress.
If it's started up again, might be nice if everyone who's participating or wanting to join into the story to have a set schedule about it. I dunno, like each week there's a new story progression by you, but in the meantime we're free to interact with each other and work with the last story moment you set up.
Just throwing out some thoughts, I'm still pretty new to stuff like this and would welcome more ideas and such.

Tl;dr I'm interested if others want to get this going again, but maybe we could set up a better schedule for it :monster:)

I got sidelined by the TLS Awards and Community Playthrough. I think after the Com Playthrough is done I will go ahead and start with Module 2. I really want to get back to it, but I want to streamline the character sheets a bit.

My idea for simplifying the combat system...

I may be implementing a Job System for Final Fantasy Realms. Thoughts? Set abilities to start, restricted armor and weapons per job. Learnable upgrades and perks.

^I like the sounds of it! Would it be like FFV where you can learn new jobs and change jobs over time, or more like what I think XII's Zodiac Age will be, where you pick a job in the beginning and can only be that one?

(Could be a compromise between the two, sort of like Tactics Advance where each race has some differing jobs, or even just something like... Picking a Warrior class can enable you to eventually learn other fighter class types to pick from (like Samurai, Dragoon, etc) but you can't branch into Magic or other types.)

Thinking stick with the FFV model of multi-classing but some jobs would be Prestige classes of others. i.e. to become a Dark Knight you have to master Knight or something.

Interlude: Crystal Clear

The dust settles around the corpse of the Chocobo Eater. A few moments prior an all-encompassing light seemed to emanate from its body. Where once it had stood proudly, there was now a massive green crystal.

The Wind Crystal said:
Warriors of Light. Take my power. Heal the cosmos.

Reno said:
What the heck is this thing? Some kind of huge materia?

You hear a crackle on your radio.

Chief Engineer said:
Guys! Something big is happening! I can't control it. I have to pull you all out of there now. Hold on to your hats.

-------

You arrive back in the Ragnarok in a heap and notice a grim look on Cid's face. He is manipulating his instruments in a panicked manner that does not at all inspire confidence.

Chief Engineer said:
Well I'm real glad you folks are alright, but can one of you tell me what the hell happened down there? My instruments read a massive power reading, something off the charts even for this thing, and then I was losing the connection to that realm fast. Almost as if the thing was being closed off from the universe.

You explain to him about the Wind Crystal's appearance in the world.

Chief Engineer said:
A CRYSTAL?! In that backwater realm?! Things are far worse than I thought. If they're coming out of the woodworks then we must really be dealing with a crisis. If the history books hold true the Crystal will have presented you with its power. I think we'd better rely on that instead of going about the old way of doing things. So let me make a few changes here before we send you to your new realm.

======
Changes

- Final Fantasy Realms will now operate under a Job System.
- All gear obtained in the previous world has been destroyed. Cid compensates you each with 1,000 gil.

The Job System

- Blue Jobs are "Tanks". Their primary function is to protect the party and draw enemy fire.
- Green Jobs are "Support". Their primary function is to heal and buff the party.
- Red Jobs are "DPS". Their primary function is to attack the enemy.

- Abilities displayed are unlocked at the Job Level shown. The Maximum Job Level is Level 6.
- Low level Jobs unlock Prestige Classes which can teach new abilities while retaining the old.
- Some jobs have multiple Prestige options. You can choose to learn each Prestige Class but they only share abilities with their Low Level Job, not each other.

- MAG / ATK refer to magical and physical attacks. i.e. MAG+10 = any spell you cast does its damage, + 10 more. ATK+10 = any physical attack you do does its damage plus 10 more.

- Each Job has a Party Ability. This is only active when there are two or more people teamed up on a quest.
- Party Abilities on Tank and Support classes are generally better than those of DPS.
- Jobs are limited in what kind of equipment they can use, but they also receive a stat boost.

===

Chief Engineer said:
You get all that? Well, go ahead and let's take a roll call. Everybody go ahead and let me know that you are all here and then pick out a job. Don't worry too much about your choice, you can change it every time you return to the Ragnarok. I'm sure once you discover the other crystals, more jobs will make themselves available as well.

Also, since you all are so experienced, you will start at Job Level 2 of the first Job you pick!

"What the hell just happened?" Shard said, rubbing his forehead. Had he blacked out again? Maybe he'd been knocked out that last hit. He made a note to get his brain checked out next time he was near a doctor, after he checked if he was a L'Cie again, now that another crystal entity had given him new powers.

Speaking of which, some of them looked pretty interesting. Given that his brief stint as a frontline fighter could charitably be described as an epic fail in every respect, maybe it was time to stay off the frontlines and out of everyone's way.

"Okay, Hunter sounds good. Time to practie my sharpshooting."

(^Glad to see ya back! Hopefully this means there's at least three of us regulars for this :D)

Velkamos picked himself up as he listened to Cid, flexing his fingers absently. That crystal had... spoke to them all. And given them some kind of power? Like some form of magicite.

There were some different abilities and ways to fight floating around in his mind now. Ways he hadn't really considered before. He was familiar with a lance; but maybe it was time to expand his expertise, learn a new way. How could he grow if he didn't? I can only imagine that doing so will make me a better hunter.

"Very well then, I shall give this Knight job a try. And fix your multiple world crisiss while I'm at it. With the rest of these blokes." He nudged Shard with his tail and grinned.

"Pleasure to be working with you," Shard told the lizard, stretching out his arms and contemplating his place in the world. He was probably going to be spending a lot of time up trees and on cliffs in the next while, supporting the frontliners as best he could. If they had no other support, this could be hard.

This time I can't fail.

Here's a map of what the town will look like. Seems like a busy city, but from what I can gather it's under marshall law. They've been having some trouble with thieves. Looks like you need to help them get the situation under control. By the way this world doesn't use Materia, but there is still a way to get some new Magic spells. You can actually Draw magic from your enemies... but don't worry, I've found a way to simplify it for you.

Getting Magic in the World of FF8

1. Every enemy you kill will drop Magic Stones which can be used to perform magic spells one time.
2. Some stores will sell Magic Stones.
3. You can even stumble across Draw Points in the world which will yield you more Magic Stones.
4. Magic Stones are treated as inventory items and can be used by any class.

Round 1: Train-ing Day

Round Options

Cid finishes up the final touches with the teleporter and it begins to hum softly while emitting a faint green glow. There is a crackle of electricity in the air and you brace yourselves for the sensation of the transit, remembering none too fondly how your last teleportation went.

Chief Engineer said:
Don't worry about winding up in the middle of a pack of wolves this time. I've got the coordinates locked in perfectly. You've got a 99% chance of hitting the mark. There's only a 1% chance of being blown out of this existence and into the void beyond.

You felt your already dim confidence wither like a dying rose. You crack your knuckles, grit your teeth and begin to approach the teleporter.

Chief Engineer said:
Oh, before you go, I see you're going in without a magic user. I'm sure you'll find one before too long but just in case I've given you a compliment of some Magic Stones. Check your character sheet.

You brace yourself, check your equipment and then jump into the teleporter. You feel yourself soaring through time and space, though there is a bit more stability to it this time around. After one stomach-turning moment of zero gravity you find yourself sitting in a rear-facing seat of a moving train. Taking a moment to begrudgingly be impressed by Cid's ability to hit a moving target, you take a look around.

The train seems plain - no flashy ornamentation nor ceremony in its design. A think aquamarine paint job is peeling a bit in corners and some of the seats around you show signs of what could be generously described as "severe" wear and tear. This was clearly a world where trains were simply a tool and not an experience.

Voice over the Intercom said:
Next stop, Deling City. End of the Line. All passengers seeking transit to Timber please board the train waiting at Platform number 4. Be sure to have your ticket with you.

Chief Engineer said:
You all will be getting off at that stop there. Twenty years ago this continent was ravaged by a war with the Sorceress - some manner of local calamity. Since then the once militaristic nation of Galbadia has become... well they're still militaristic but they have elected a sensible leader - a former military man named Caraway. He lives in the Presidential Palace and his former mansion is being used as a hub for any freelancer work. That's where you come in. Board a bus, or simply hike to the Caraway Manor to receive details of your mission. But don't be afraid to take in the sights of the city first.

1. Come up with your character details: Name, Race, Homeworld, Backstory.

2. Choose a job from here.

3. PM me with your information and I will make up a character sheet for you and you can join in during the next round! It's that simple!

Deling City Town Options

Deling_City_Map.png

You can shop, or visit the Galbadia Hotel any time you are in town. The information is listed on the map above. Resting at an inn will not prevent you from taking other actions this round.

Feel free to examine each option and check out the associated "Results". In your response be sure to commit to whatever actions you wish to have taken. Unless they specifically say "Your Turn Is Over" you can perform multiple actions each round (a Turn Ending action can be the last in a sequence of actions you perform).

-----

You make your way to the nearest bus stop and wait patiently for the bus to arrive. For some reason the ticket taker appears to be blind and asks you to tell him once the bus arrives. He says so with the grim humorlessness of somebody who has been pranked a number of times by heartless youths.

You ride the transit around the city block, finally arriving at Caraway Manor.

RESULT: The Main Quest will commence with Round 2 - Your Turn Is Over.

Wandering about the town you notice that you are getting more than a few funny looks. Some of the younger crowd seem especially confused.

Teenage Girl said:
Is that... a Wendigo wearing clothes?

Teenage Boy said:
No, I think it's a Shumi.

Other Teenage Boy said:
Shumi don't look like that you damned fool.

Teenage Boy said:
What do they look like then?

Other Teenage Boy said:
Not that.

You also draw some attention from the guards who seem to regard you with suspicion. One of them even stops you but appears to make the same mistake as the younger boy from before.

Sergeant Ghol said:
You must be one of those Shumi. Well you're free to travel about the city so long as you obey the law. Don't let the kids get you down, they're not as worldly as one might hope. If you need any help finding your way around town, feel free to ask me for help.

Sergeant Ghol hands you a map of the city and returns to his nearby post, standing at attention.

RESULTS: New Contact- Sergeant Ghol

You decide to examine the nearby armory, a collection of high powered military weaponry, with the unmistakable signs of a bloated defense budget. Enormous automated tanks patrol the area and soldiers outfitted in the finest gear stand about lazily chatting about various monsters they had the opportunity to kill during the war.

One takes special notice of you and gazes upon you with a look of what would appear to be reverence, if you could see his eyes behind his mask.

Captain Mertz said:
Whoa. That is some impressive armor. Are you a SeeD?

Unsure of what to make of this, you simply shrug. The Captain continues.

Captain Mertz said:
Well either way, that gear of yours seems top of the line. I don't know that we have much here that would approach that. But hey if you are doing some freelance work up at Caraway Mansion they might have some at least useful patches for you. Thanks for sharing man!

Shard found himself relaxing in the familiar scene of a town under martial law. It was amazingly relaxed compared to the ones he was used to , but the heavy military presence still brought a few pangs of homesickness before he fought them off. There was a moment's unease when he was approached by a Captain, (a heavily armed stranger would have questions to answer in a PSICOM cordon,), but nothing came of it beyond making a new friend. This really was a wonderful place.

He wandered around town for a while, taking in an excellent piano show while ignoring the strange panhandling man, and eventually took to the sewers, hoping to find some rats or monsters he could test out his new guns on, but Galbadian standards of sanitation were so high all he found was magical healing items. This was a fantastic town.

(Love the personal character side bits you added up there, Jason. Also this looks really great so far, thanks for putting in so much work for only a handful of players right now! ^_^)

Velkamos didn't feel the most comfortable in this city. Maybe it was because of the martial law, or the nighttime setting of an unfamiliar place, or the fact that there were a lot less people that had teleported with him to this world. His only comfort was knowing Shard was around here (though not with him currently) and the heavy broadsword on his back.
And people kept calling him a Shumi, whatever that was. Sure, great, every world has humes, but bangaa are non-existant, he grumbled inwardly, feeling a tad irritated. Which likely didn't help the suspicion already tossed at him.

Though Sergeant Ghol seemed to move beyond his suspicion to speak with fairly friendly words. The gesture and the map was appreciated; Velkamos thanked the man and checked out the map.
There was a shop nearby; he headed there first to check out the wares. He had some gil in his coin purse and there was no healer in the party. He bought 5 Antidotes, 3 Potions, and 2 Phoenix Downs. Best be prepared, wouldn't do good to be done in by whatever beasts roam this world.
A trinket caught his eye while in the shop. Some star-shaped pendant. He wasn't quite sure what it was for, protection from a status affect? He shrugged and bought it too, putting it around his neck. Dead bangaa don't have use for gil, so why hoard it when these items could save his life?

After leaving the shop, he took a peek into the sewers nearby, hoping to get a look at potential beasts and fiends to fight... but there was nothing except some bugs and magic stones apparently. And Shard. The man seemed the opposite of him; at home in this city, like he was really enjoying it. Velkamos wondered where he came from, if his home was similar to this.
"By the way, since we've currently no healers with us, you might want to check out the shop in the city if you're low on items," Velkamos told the man. "I'll be around the area if you need me."

He grabbed the magic stones and strolled back out, eventually winding up in a hotel where a young girl was playing piano. He was never musically inclined himself but the song she played was quite nice.

He heard the man approach him but never turned his head to look; hearing was miles better than eyesight anyway, hence the thin bandana covering his eyes. He heard the man's pitch, and wrinkled his snout a bit. Hrrrmmph.
"Here, 250 gil. If I find out that it's gone towards anything but her career, I will find you and take it back," he mused to the man as he handed him the money, and then gave a toothy smile for added affect.
