Hmm I am seeing that Yuffie is a deliberate westernisation of a japanese name Yufi?

I see no real references to Yufi though. Any ideas of the name origin? It does appear to be Japanese based, given her appearance and so forth, as well as Kisaragi.

The fact that it's 'fi' kind of rules out it being an exact Japanese name, since that sound wasn't native to Japanese. Searching Google for the origin of her name just bring up references to it being chosen simply because it sounded nice.

That is Haidekker not Haidegger... Gemini discovered that...and so I am guessing it is a rearrangement of Martin Heidegger's name to heidekker.

Good catch on Gemini's part there. It's identical to the Japanese spelling of Martin Heidegger's last name, only with the "ka" instead of the "ga" sound. Very odd. Wish I'd noticed this before.

Anywho, going on Google, I find that a number of sites seem to use the "ga" spelling even when talking about the FFVII character, and some use the "ka" spelling while talking about Martin Heidegger. As well, the only romanization I've seen for the FFVII character's name is still "Heidegger."

I'd go with it.

Also, a question was asked of a source for Hut and Domino, I was told it appears in Ultimania? Do you have a reference?

To be fussy, 'what the???' seems to have more of a shocked and surprised tone than I get from 'なんとか???', which to me sounds more like you don't know what it's called.

Don't know about the Heidegger thing, though. Some times transcriptions of names can look a bit strange from foreign eyes, and without any comment on it, it's hard to know exactly what they were going for at times.

That's the problem yeah....that something??? is a crap name and I am not sure if it gets across the same feel as what the japanese does (I wish I knew Japanese).

Now that I've thought about it more, I believe something along the lines of "Whatchamacallit?" would be the most appropriate substitute. I believe that accurately conveys the feel of it.

As for Domino and Hut, I'm quite sure that reference is in an Ultimania. I'll check later and let you know.

These are often called Fire, Fira and Firaga in canon. The reason the katakana doesn't show Firera and Firega is probably because early FF games had a character limit of 4.

I'm not particularly partial either way with the curative and thunder spells, but I don't think anything other than "Fira" and "Firaga" rolls off the tongue quite right for those.

"Firega" especially sounds hokey when you think about somebody shouting it as mages do in FFTactics. It comes off looking like "Fire! Gaaaaaaah!" =P

I'm with Tres on the Firaga front, and I think the spells as a whole sound better with -ara and -aga suffixes and dropping the last syllbale/ silent letters, rather than -ra and -ga, with a couple exceptions, like Gravity/-ira, but 'Gravaga' still sounds better than 'graviga' to me. Dunno why.

Also, Quakara and Quakaga sound better than Quara and Quaga in my opinion.

- Graviga seems fine to me personally
- Cura/Curaga sound better to me
- The 'k' sound in the Quake spells has a nicer ring that without it

Basically as FF English canon in these cases Quake changes are a good idea (i think originally I opted out because of the "Quack" sound some might have....). Just extremely busy atm changing the menu via hex editor. That is a mod on its own.... when that's done its back to full time work on this.
