I need Ao3 to open its invite thing so I can have a pseud account to also not put anything in but keep it for all the awful porn.

If you need an invite, I've got at least one :monster: *has no interest in possibly exchanging pornfic*

Oh...wait. I mean I already have once account. Does that mean I could invite myself?

EDIT: ok so I just found the invite thingy, I have to request some invites but its asking me to specify why I want them? So I can fucking invite people to the fucking site you fucking fucks.

Uh, what the hell should I say? Or doesnt it matter?

I would be down for some writing battles/prompts.

Also, what is Ao3? I feel like I should know this...

Archive of Our Own.

It's better than fanficition.net, because the fics are better and it has a nicer layout/font and more proper porn

^^Their filters are shit though. I like their formatting better to, but until they have the sense to get a "without" filter... *sigh* Searching that site is a waste of time if you're not into porn.

'Cause seriously, it shouldn't be that hard to make "Explicit" and "M/M" fics to not show up on the lists. Fanfiction.net has a without filter so that if you don't want fics of a certain genre or with parings, or with certain characters to show up, then they won't.

Fic-battles are melees in which everyone is a winner because we get lots of great fic out of it. I don't know where the idea originated, but this famous website:

http://battle.oxoniensis.org/index.html

makes me think of be-ribboned jousting dicks. It's the famous Porn Battle website, which might or might not be associated with Oxford University (I like to think it is). Sadly, it's now on hiatus, but it's been around since 2006.

The Final Fantasy Exchange runs an annual Kiss Battle in the month of February on dreamwidth. Here's the link:

I wrote "Bad for You" for a prompt from the Kiss Battle several years ago.

The nice thing about writing to a prompt is that you know for sure there is at least one person who is going to be absolutely thrilled by the fact that you wrote anything at all!

Ok we gotta do this somehow except its 2am and i should be asleep now. Maybe we should get a list of participants and prompts? Im happy to write anything though obvs it would be easier for fandoms im familiar with. Or it could just be original I dunno?

Yes! I'm down with the prompts.

I did know this! Thanks for the reminder.

I wonder if I have an account...

There are already a lot of prompt communities out there. Are we sure we need another one? If we all went and joined the FF Exchange, we'd get a bigger pool of writers to fill our prompts, and a wider range of prompts to inspire us. They already have a lengthy back catalogue of prompts that they called "Chocobo Down" just waiting to be filled.

That said, if people want a prompt exchange here I can organize it. I think we should have a thread where people can leave prompts and post the filled prompts as replies. There shouldn't be any time pressure and people can dip in and out as they like.

What do you guys think?

Personally I'd rather start something smallish here, joining those established communities sounds a bit scary, that way if im a fepic ail I dont have too many witnesses :monster: but its up to everyone else here if theyre interested.

Okay - well, what we need is lots of prompts so that we have plenty to pick from. Hopefully even those who don't want to write will leave prompts - serious, cracky, or whatever.

^This is where Fangu's shippin' generator on Tumblr will come in handy :monster:

I got: You now ship Reeve with Reno.

Their first date was in the ladies' powder-room at the ski-lodge in Icicle Inn where they told each other terrible jokes and then Reno decided this would be a one time thing only.

And I am callin' dibs on that :monster: But not really.

Prompt:

Tifa tries to teach another character piano

This is more a multiple people need to contribute type prompt, but the AVALANCHE crew are camping out for the night in the middle of their journey and to kill time they're sitting around the camp fire tellin' stories, and each participant has to write a fic of an individual character's story

...

I'm not great with ideas :closedmonster:

idk... I'm scared of prompts because they feel like assignments :wacky: Me + writing in an institutional education way = no match. But I have been pondering on doing something like that, so... idk.

idk.

That being said, by popular demand I have moved my desktop from the livingroom to the guest room, which means I now have a proper desk with a proper screen and keyboard - I wrote most of Ally: Life on my desktop sitting in a sofa, but I also wrote a good deal of it during free time at work, where I had a desk - idk it feels more focused to have a proper desk and chair. I feel like writing original stuff though... but then again any writing is good writing, so

silent pause

You don't have to commit yourself to anything. You don't have to write to a prompt. But on the other hand, if someone happens to post a prompt that tickles your fancy, you can always have a go.

I do all my writing on the sofa, but for work I have to sit at a desk.

Should we make a thrad then? Something like 'drabble prompts - get your arse in here' :monster:

Aww man, reading the first book I realize I really am bad at dialogue planning for characters. Any way I can improve on it? I sorta feel disheartened after I checked the dialogues really suck .

Review and review again? I mean I'm not a writer, but there's a reason why writers discard 80% of what they write and then something similar again after an editor OCDs over it, :monster:

I dunno, when I wrote the first cuts on the thread, it was so good. Then I feel it came out so sloppy, I figured I may need some lectures on how to do script writing or interactions with characters. :/

The thing is, real life people have unique speech patterns. At the most basic level we're talking about the catchphrases people over-use (my HoD always says, "Fabulous") but it's also about the richness and breadth of their vocabulary, the complexity of their sentence structures, whether they are wordy or laconic, the rhythmic pattern of their words.

A good way to practice this is by starting with people you know. Think of three or four people you know well who are all very different from each other. Then try to write the way each of them would speak in various real life banal scenarios, such as
- somebody running over their foot with a shopping trolley at the supermarket
(for example,
My brother in law: Fuckin' hell you eejit careful fuck
My mother: Oh my goodness, ha ha sorry, I didn't see you there
My eldest son: ....... Ouch.)

- calling everyone in the house to come eat dinner
- trying to book a hotel room
- pointing out to someone else that they have made a mistake
- apologizing for making a mistake

You can think of plenty more. The purpose of this exercise is to develop an ear for diverse voices. The ideal should be to give each character such a distinct voice that you don't even have to use dialogue tags for the reader to know which person is speaking.

It ain't so easy here since most of their speech patterns are trifled with arabic accents. I ain't got any western friends nearby to help me review or further check how to develop patterns for most of my characters so I cycle through movies/documentaries/ etc etc to try and get by.

edit: here is my Distortion character exercises:

- calling everyone in the house to come eat dinner

Ren Martz: ' Uhmm.. So I'm having a dinner party tonight, can you guys make it?'
Elizabeth King: 'Oh I'm having dinner tonight, prolly pizzas. Care to join me, lads?'
Octo/Beatrice/Alicia (post Time Continuum): 'Oi, I got dinner ready. You guys better make it or it'll be a waste.'
Mirosolar: 'TONIGHT WE DINE ON TIME TRAVELLING FLESH!'
John Booker: 'I'm having stew for dinner tonight but there's gonna be alot, are you guys hungry?'
Stata Fiya: 'Uhh, Not sure what I'll be cooking but do you guys wanna try?'
Maxine Gates: ' So who wants spaghetti?! I got lots of orders here!'
Kim Chung Ae: ' My skills in the kitchen isn't up to task, but you are more than welcome to try my dishes.'

- trying to book a hotel room

Ren Martz: 'Hi, could I book a room for two?'
Elizabeth King: 'Awrite! Can you book me a room, please?'
Octo/Beatrice/Alicia (post Time Continuum): 'I'd like to book a room for one, preferably away from the noise.'
Mirosolar: 'I desire a den of equity for my brood. Can this be done?'
John Booker: 'I need a private suite, it's for a classified detail. Bill the FBI.'
Stata Fiya: 'I'd like a room with lots of windows, man. Can you give me one?'
Maxine Gates: 'Hmm, before I book, is there a Jazz bar in this hotel? '
Kim Chung Ae: 'This place is adequate enough. How much do you charge?'

- pointing out to someone else that they have made a mistake

Ren Martz: ' Hey something's not right about this. I think you're wrong!'
Elizabeth King: 'I think you're making a mistake.'
Octo/Beatrice/Alicia (post Time Continuum): 'You are about to make the biggest mistake of your life...'
Mirosolar: 'Choose wisely, any ill thought mistake and I will have your head.'
John Booker: 'Are you sure you want to try me?'
Stata Fiya: 'You're about to mess it up, man.'
Maxine Gates: 'Sugar, be careful! You're gonna be sorry if you mess it up!'
Kim Chung Ae: 'I doubt what you're doing is correct. Think carefully.'

- apologizing for making a mistake

Ren Martz: ' This is terrible! I'm sorry I made a mess out of things!'
Elizabeth King: 'Argh! This is completely mucked up! I'm sorry!'
Octo/Beatrice/Alicia (post Time Continuum): 'Ahh shit, I completely blew it! I'm sorry!'
Mirosolar: 'A Chieftain never apologizes, but for this mistake, he must make an exception.'
John Booker: 'I'm terribly sorry, is there anything I can do for you?'
Stata Fiya: ' Hmmm... Well this is my fault. Sorry. '
Maxine Gates: ' Oh dear! Oh dear! I'm sorry about that, sugar! '
Kim Chung Ae: ' You have my deepest apologies.'
