So much seemed to be lost in the localization for this game. Since I've been enjoying the Kotaku series about Final Fantasy VII's translations, I find myself a bit on the fence about how I'd like to see the remake done.
On the one hand, yeah, it'd be great to hear versions of the dialog closer to what was originally intended. But on the other, there was a certain kind of charm to the U.S. release's. Goofs included.
Then again, they may be working on an entirely new and different script anymore. So who really knows?

I think that if FFXV's character localization is anything to go by, FFVIIR will still gets its own type of localized charm in its translation, but I also think that it'll have better overall adherence to the meaning behind the original dialogue in its translations as well. (Although when it comes to Lore, who really knows since Tres' shown that the Jpn, Eng, & Ger localizations can get VASTLY different details on some descriptive text).
Either way, I'm hoping that whoever IS in charge of doing that localization is familiar with the history of FFVII's odder mistranslations and localizations and has a little bit of fun with it in ways that make nods to the OG:
For me, I'd love it if we got small things like, "An' 'round these parts, we've taken ta callin' him the 'Midgar Zolom'" like it's a sort of redneck nickname for the Midgardsormr that makes a nod towards the idea of Midgar as a toxic and dangerous place, or if the dude in the pipe is so ill that he says, "Urrrrhhhhh... I are not feel so good" when Aerith calls attention to him as a way of lightly preserving the original bad translation of her line.

Yeah, XV and XIV are replete with such callbacks and clever reimaginings, so hopefully that would carry over to VII as well.

X-Soldier, refresh my memory (if you don't mind), what exactly was the story behind "Midgardsormr"?? From the sound of it, the 'proper' (i.e. not used) translation sounds a bit clumsy, especially coming out of an English-speaking mouth.
P.S. In some weird way, I'm starting to think that lovably awkward translations from Japanese to English are just going to be one of those things you got to experience if you came of age during a certain age of videogames that eventually becomes a completely forgotten relic...we'll be tellin' our grandkids about how in our day, things were a lot more awkward.

I believe it was because "Midgardsormr" is transliterated as 'midogaruzuorumu' (ミドガルズオルム
in the original Japanese, and the translator likely wasn't familiar with the Norse mythological origins of the name and went with their closest guess.

Bri & Force are both right.
"Midgard" is the place "s" is the possessive "ormr" is a snake, thus Midgardsormr is one name of the classic Norse Mythological beast. It pronounces VERY awkwardly in English, but much less so in Scandanavian languages where it originates.
Additionally, the fact that FFVII pulls a lot of its place names from that same Norse Mythology (Midgar=Midgard, Nibelheim=Niflheim) means that it's natural to've made the mistake to assum that this was meant to be related to the in-game location, rather than the direct mythological reference.
The pronunciation as well as the fact that they both reference Norse mythology are reasons why I enjoy the mis-translation version, as it makes the entity game-specific to FFVII in a fun and flavorful way (but there's a whole thread about that)

I think If they went with Midgarsormr I'd want it to be a Weapon tier boss, or better, one of those things you can't put down permanently, just drive away.
