What's interesting to me is the crystals. Those crystals are linked to materia formation in some way, yeah? So... just thinking out loud... could a materia naturally form at some point in the future with Lucrecia's memories/knowledge/personality encoded on it?
Ooooh, that IS reeeaaally interesting. ^_^ I'd write fanfiction about it if I wasn't already working on a totally different idea!

And yeah, if I'm not mistaken, the crystal she's in isn't just "linked to materia in some way"—it technically is materia. It's a fountain of Lifestream that has solidified, much like the one that Sephiroth explains to Cloud, Zack, and Tifa in the Nibel mountains, and like what Sephiroth seals himself inside later in FF7.

...

I don't recall if the scene was repeated in Crisis Core, and don't have the script available for it if it was. =(

...[/quote]I thought it might be, but I wasn't entirely sure of my recall, so I hedged my comment. :) Thanks for clearing it up. And as for anyone wanting to write a fanfic based on it - and this is literally to anyone - go for it. I have no idea what to do with the idea myself, it's just one of those that flits across your mind and is gone in the next moment. It just so happened I was typing here when the thought flitted. :)

And no, it's not repeated in CC. They have a montage covering the journey to the Nibel Reactor instead, which always seemed a bit cheap to me. But still, it had some new dialogue over the montage. Including Zack using the blunt end. (Grife!)

Hm? Did I miss something? OK, she says to Vincent Jenova won't let her die, but I took that as she didn't seem to have aged, and her mind/soul hasn't rejoined the Lifestream. I never read any suicide attempts into that...

Thanks for the fanart. ^_^ I'll have to check out the fanfics at a later date.

She says, "I wanted to die. I wanted to disappear, but the Jenova inside me wouldn't let me die so easily."

Then, in DoC, she says something to the effect of, "I'm sorry...I can't take it anymore...my body...my mind..." and then her next thoughts are making plans for after her death (i.e., recording her knowledge). I don't have the English script handy but Souya's translations are:

Dirge of Cerberus (Japanese) said:
Lucrecia: I am sorry. It’s already…… I am sorry…… I seems I can’t do it anymore….. My mind, my body……
Lucrecia (Monologue): At the end…let me, become data and remain…… My thoughts, this love…… Records, copy of my memories….. For the sake of that person [Vincent]…… Can’t it be done? Huh…..? Fragmentation. I am sorry… Practical…but…… Whose…fragment…… To live…… Hope. Can’t it be done?
*Scene goes back to the lab with Lucrecia gone*

It's all very implied, but pretty clear as far as implications go in FF7.

It seems a lot in character too. Vincent lovingly looking at her, while she seems distant, looking elsewhere.
And yet, they're both close and happy. He doesn't seem to mind in the least that she's not paying attention to him, because she's there.

I wrote some of their story in my fanfic called the Story of Sephiroth.
Where can I find it? :D

You know, I always found the connection between Vincent and Sephiroth interesting, especially given how obvious it is but never played upon. It's one of those things that's like "if only this one thing had been different," and none of the tragedy would have happened. And what I mean is that if Vincent and Lucrecia had reconciled, he could have been his stepfather. Or if he'd just been stronger, even after Lucrecia was gone, he could have kidnapped Sephiroth and/or tried to protect him for her.

Unlikely scenarios, but still fun to think about. I guess what it is that gets to me is why Vincent doesn't feel any sort of "paternal figure"-like connection to Sephiroth, given that he loved his mother so much. You'd think he'd at least view him as a sort of nephew or something. I think he felt more like that toward Shelke.

I'd like to make a comparison to certain elements in Harry Potter, but since I don't want to spoil the end of Harry Potter, I'll just trust that those who have read the entire thing know what I'm talking about and can contemplate the parallels quietly, and those who have not read it will have no idea what I'm talking about. =)

Also, I just noticed something very sweet. You all know "our spot, under that tree"? Well it's actually two trees. =) One symbolizing Vincent, one symbolizing Lucrecia.

...I know exactly what you're refering to, and I think it's a pretty fair comparison, despite some major differences :monster:

I also found it very strange that Vincent never made many remarks as to what he felt for Sephiroth. From memory, he mostly talks about Hojo. I thought that may have been something very interesting to add into DoC, but alas... the game was severely lacking, even though I did have fun with it.

In fact, I think the Vincent/Sephiroth, Lucrecia/Sephiroth relationships would be an alright excuse to include him in future compilation titles. without actually including him. Of course, there's also the Angeal/Genesis/Sephiroth angle that needs more exploring, but that's for another thread.

Well of course there are big differences, or else it'd be the same story, but interesting, isn't it? ;D

I think Vincent mentioned his feelings toward Sephiroth once, and it was something like, "To kill Sephiroth...to kill the son of that beloved woman... Am I on the verge of committing another sin?"

Maybe I should touch upon it in my doujin..

Ah well.

Well, to be honest, I've always thought of Vincent as being mostly indifferent to Sephiroth. He doesn't know Sephiroth as a person, has never spent any time with him... I think he views Sephiroth's atrocities as being Hojo's responsibility. What compassion he feels towards Sephiroth that he wouldn't feel to a complete stranger is purely because Sephiroth is Lucrecia's son... however, there must be some resentment, as he must see some resemblance to Hojo in Sephiroth.

I think you should. It'd be interesting. :) And that fanart is awesome.

true, but considering she says later that Jenova "wouldn't let me die so easily," I think she actually attempted, maybe even more than once, but survived and thus went into seclusion.

I believe Vincent had very complex feelings towards Sephiroth: on one hand he was everything he loved (Lucrecia), on the other - everything he hated (Hojo).
Even if Hojo wasn't his father, Vince I think would still feel some bitterness... or I don't know how to name it.
But certainly killing Seph wasn't easy for him, considering that not only he was Lucrecia's son, but also looked very much like her.

Btw, I made this Lucrecia/Sephiroth banner the other day, thought about sharing it here:

And the fact that Vincent got to see Sephiroth grown to adulthood while Lucrecia did not—I wonder if that's something he would have taken lightly. Surely caring about Lucrecia as much as he did, he would have realized that this is something she would have treasured. No, I don't think it was easy for him at all. And the fact that he was able to do it anyway because he recognized it as what needed to be done just goes to show how strong he is.

What did you do to get that shot of Sephiroth? And what does the tiny text say? :D

Lucrecia never got to see Sephiroth at all, that's what really makes it all so tragic (for me).
I actually feel pretty bad for Seph too, cos he was really a nice guy before he found out about the whole Jenova affair. I couldn't believe at first when I saw him acting like a decent human being in CC. And the fact that he thought some ugly alien monster was his mother instead of the beautiful lady, it makes me feel really sorry for him.

Awesome banner, SC. But all this talk reminds me of a passage from an AU I wrote. It's on fanfiction(dot)net, but I'll quote it here. OK, it's Vincent watching the approach of the ShinRa to clean up the Nibel Reactor. They've just been jumped by the dragon.

Vincent watched as two men jumped out of the back of the truck. He couldn’t see them properly through the gloom. He frowned. Surely two men was greatly underestimating their enemy’s abilities?

Then there was a flash of lightening. Vincent’s breath caught in his throat.

“Holy Bahamut…!” he choked out. He’d only seen blurred photographs of him before, but there was no mistaking those facial features -- he’d only ever seen one person before with a similar facial structure... Lucrecia.

“Sephiroth,” Vincent breathed, and crouched down low on top of the rock where he was perched. Time to see Sephiroth’s legendary fighting prowess first hand.
Ironically, Sephiroth doesn't hear him, but Zack does. Sephiroth basically tells Zack he's hearing things. :P

I wonder if she ever saw pictures of him in newspapers or anything. She tells Vincent she heard he died 5 years ago, so unless she starts chatting up strangers who happen into her cave about "Hey, I'm Sephiroth's mom" on a regular basis, I'm thinking she might have ventured back out into the real world a few times, probably to keep tabs on him. She's obviously been hearing the gossip.

I'm also one of those of the mind that Sephiroth never would have gone insane had Lucrecia been in his life, even if he had found out about everything exactly like he did.

I always love reading Redemption, you have a very flowy style that reminds me of a river for some reason. I've been thinking of trying my hand at dojunshi again. I've improved since my freshman year when I did a short KHII thing. I was thinking of doing the sequel to that, which I already wrote but it would be cooler as a manga.

I'm compiling a Vincent x Lucrecia playlist on playlist.com so if anyone has any songs that they think fit them then you let me up and when I get the list up and running I'll put it up here! ^_^

Really? o.O Cause I always thought I had a very inconsistent style that reminds me of someone who's tying to draw manga but is too lazy to do it right. :monster:

Every song reminds me of Vincent and Lucrecia, so, I respectfully decline.

In other news, it just occurred to me that the scene of Vincent discovering his dad's file in Luci's lab and Luci running away from him and starting the "I'm so sorry" may have occurred at separate times. Which kinda makes sense since the latter was supposed to happen at the town gates. So maybe this was when he proposed to her, after all. Shitty timing still, but...

Hmm, main idea behind this AU is that Vincent's more proactive in this reality, and breaks out of a guarded Mansion at the same time Cloud meets with Tifa by the well. It's set up some dominos, so I can make a few major changes (the ShinRa Mansion no longer exists when Sephiroth and Zack visit, for example).

Like Ravy, a lot of songs make me think of Vincrescent, so I'll only mention a couple. "Fallen Angel" by Meatloaf is one for now. The other is called "We Will Meet Again". Not sure who sings it though. But it's from the end of "Lucario and the Mystery of Mew". XD

Huh, that'd never occured to me Ravy. Yeah, good timing Vince.

We Will Meet Again said:
Like the mountain I must conquer, like the battle I must endure
I will fight for your honor, steadfast and sure
Still got a vision fit for a king, and I got a feeling I can do anything

We will meet again, we will meet again
(yeahhh yeahhhh)
We will meet again

I will search the whole world over, if that’s what I must do
I’ll follow every winding road, just to be with you
I got a dream that I just can’t ignore, before I am through I will open every door

We will meet again, we will meet again

And nothing can stop this journey (stop this journey), across this unknown land
And like the fire that keeps on burning (fire that keeps on burning), we will make our stand

We are bound together by fate, set apart by what we found
And we’ll make this sacrifice, cause we know where we are bound
Side by side we will ride once again, if we keep the flame alive my friend…

We will meet again, we will meet again (we will meet again)

I will search the whole world over, if that’s what I must do
I’ll follow every winding road, just to be with you
I got a dream that I just can’t ignore, before I am through I will open every door

Vincent stood in the snow, breath steaming in the air. He found it somewhat amusing, although you wouldn’t be able to tell by looking at his face. Nibelheim had remained snow free throughout the holidays, much to Lucrecia’s chagrin. Now, it was February, and everywhere you looked, every surface was white.

Vincent dearly wished that the Turks’ uniform allowed for some less formal and more practical footwear in such conditions. No-one could remember when it had last snowed in Midgar, so maybe snow-wear hadn’t been given sufficient consideration while they were writing the regulations. However, there were some specific instructions about what could and could not be worn in cold weather conditions.

The sanguine scarf that had been his secret Santa gift (something implemented and organised by Professor Gast) sat around his neck in stark contrast to the dark navy of his standard issue suit. The scarf was his only concession to the cold weather, due to regulations -- a thick coat would hinder his ability to draw his firearm, as would gloves, while earmuffs would affect his hearing. The presence of earmuffs was especially dangerous, as it could lead to missing something critical -- the tell-tale click of a rifle being primed, a twig snapping underfoot --

Suddenly, a snowball impacted with the side of his face. A whoop swiftly followed.

“Think fast, Vincent!” Lucrecia crowed, another snowball already being formed in her gloved hands. Vincent was impressed at her speed. He dived under the next snowball, rolling forwards across the snow, and coming up with a handful of snow. Lucrecia shrieked in a mixture of surprise and delight as the snowball hit her torso.

# # # # #

Sometime later, the two of them were sat on a blanket Lucrecia had spread over a snow bank before commencing hostilities. Both of them were short of breath, due to the snowball fight.

“You’re…not bad, Doctor Crescent,” Vincent said, breathlessly.

Lucrecia laughed. “I had two brothers -- one older, one younger. Truly survival of the fittest. And how many times must I tell you? It’s Lucrecia.”

“But, Doc--” Vincent began.

Lucrecia laid a finger on the tip of his nose, silencing him. She didn’t notice him blush under the wind flush on his cheeks. “Loo. Crease. Shuh. I’m sure you can say it,” she said, before smiling mischievously; “If you try.”

“…Yes Lucrecia,” he replied, glad he hadn’t stammered.

“There. That wasn’t so hard, was it?” she asked, still smiling.

“Ah, there you are. AHOY, DOCTOR CRESCENT!” someone hollered. “We require your assistance for the next experiment!”

Lucrecia rolled her eyes. “But I wanted to play in the snow…” she muttered under her breath. “Coming, PROfessor!” she yelled back, as she stood up.

Vincent rolled up the blanket and followed her back towards the Mansion. Professor Hojo was stamping his feet in the snow, trying to keep warm. He was still wearing his lab clothes.

“Ah, there you are, Doctor Crescent. Professor Gast has been asking for you,” Hojo said. “You best hurry on ahead.”

“Yes, Professor,” Lureccia said and went past Hojo into the Mansion. Pausing in the doorway, she tittered slightly. “Honestly Professor, you’re as bad as Vincent. Neither of you dress warmly enough for this weather.” Then she left.

Hojo looked Vincent up and down for a moment, and smiled slightly. “That scarf really does suit you, Mr Valentine,” he said, satisfied.

Vincent blinked in surprise. “Yes, I think so, too. Thank you.”

Hojo chuckled to himself. “Oh, you’re most welcome. And I’m glad you concur.”

As Hojo entered the Mansion, Vincent glanced at his scarf bewilderedly.

# # # # #

Vincent returned to consciousness abruptly, sound asleep one minute, irrevocably awake the next. It took a few seconds for his mind to place his surroundings. The reverberating purr of Nanaki’s snoring in the next room helped immensely.

Vincent ran a hand across his face. Staying at Cosmo Canyon had been a bad idea. Far too close to Nibelheim. And the closer he was to Nibelheim, the more vivid and frequent the dreams.

It was cold this morning. Vincent looked at the window, at the purple sky, as night began to dissolve into dawn. He blinked once, twice, and climbed out of bed and walked to the window. He slowly opened it, not quite believing his eyes.

It was snowing. Vincent glanced at the calendar. A rare smile appeared on his lips, half-ironic and incredulous. Of course, it would have to be. The day after the day he had just relived in his dream. He looked out of the window.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Lucrecia,” he said quietly, still smiling to himself.

You, sir, win for forcing the infinitely more correct pronounciation of Lucrecia's name. I've begun forcing myself into Loo-cret-see-ah only because that's how everyone else in the world now says it, but my brain and tongue have struck a compromise and usually come to an agreement somewhere on Loo-cree-shee-ah.

Sweet little fic. =) Though the Hojo part inspired some wtf-ness. Next they should start chatting about shoes or where to get the best mani.
