I just saw Hostel for the first time, and I don't get why people make a big deal about it.

Most fucking retarded movie I've ever seen.

^That. He had the idea a long time ago, but hadn't been working on it for all the years in between.

He still had more that enough time to come up with something just ever so slightly more thoughtful. Or at least time to realize not to hype it up as an "amazing work of art of epic proportions," as hazuka put it.

The hype worked, didn't it? And the story that was decided upon was decided upon because it was something safe that the mainstream would eat up. And it seems to have all worked. :monster:

The Lightning Thief. Can you say unfaithful?

It was very different from the book. Many characters from the book such as Clarrise and Aeires are missing. The final battle is different. The whole scene with Hades is different.

However, I feel that it is still a good movie. The changes are annoying if you've read the book, but if you just think of it as an AU or something, its actually really good.

Judging by how much money it made I don't think he gives a shit. Just proves it's all in the execution.

Resident Evil: Extinction. It wasn't terrible, and I wasn't biased because I haven't played the games.

Dawn of the Dead is a better zombie movie though, :monster:. RE's got more story in it, on the other hand.

When we've seen it before handled better and less transparent, yes it does mean the story is shit. Also when the creator made such a big deal about how progressive and insightful the movie would be.

Not the mention that fact that Cameron has supposedly been sitting on this movie for fifteen years and that was the best he could come up with.
Most of the other points have already been addressed above, but Cameron always made it plainly apparent that the plot would be minimalist. Anyone expecting layers upon layers of intrigue has only themselves to blame.

Part of part one of the full-length version of Red Cliff, :monster:.

(It's China's biggest / most expensive production to date, a $80 million, four and a half hour war movie, with Newton playing only a minor byrole, as can be expected)

Is expecting 2 layers so unreasonable?

Given how much Cameron emphasized the simplicity of the plot in interviews, I don't really think so.

That doesn't excuse the overall lack of a decent plot in favor of flashy visuals.

I couldn't get past the hideous aliens to really enjoy a lot of the scenes. Jesus christ they're fugly. Then again, I'm not really shallow enough to watch a two hour film for visuals alone.

Really if you want to get into it Star Wars had a really simple plot as well. But I don't hear anyone complaining about that. They both had pretty awful dialogue as well.

Avatar (finally): Can be summed up in one big "meh." Didn't care for the visuals too much either. While they were a graphical feat, there were parts that were strangely remniscent of certain games I've played. Spira comes to mind, actually.

The Time Traveller's Wife: The trailer/book synopsis made it seem that the movie would focus on his wife, with the time traveller coming and going once in a while. It was in fact all about him. Anyways, corny movie is corny and not in a good way.

Shutter Island: Just got back from it. All I can say is - beautiful, brilliant etc. I'm slightly disappointed that it ended the way I really didn't want it to end :( Spoilers below.

The whole "main character is crazy/making the whole thing up" ending usually doesn't sit too well with me unless the story handles it well. I can say that Shutter Island handles the end fairly decently, and the rest of the movie makes up for the ending if it really pisses you off. Also, you probably shouldn't have read this spoiler if you planned to go see it :monster:

The Collector

This is what the saw series SHOULD be by now. I'd describe it as home alone if the traps killed, and the family never left, tho thats really not what its about.
It's tense, gory, has some neat deaths, and a pretty good killer despite not giving much about his past.

Yes it was. First Max Payne and now this? Jesus man.

I'm entertained easily, :monster:. Replace the movie's title with 'watermelon' and you may get it.

Also, Max Payne wasn't terrible either. If you disagree, you've yet to see actual terrible movies, :monster:. My dad seems to like those though.

...Really? You've never heard anyone complaining about Star Wars?

Haven't watched it yet, but I'm going to watch Origin: Spirits of the Past later - after the DVD returned after a six month absense God knows where! No idea where the hell it was, I found it in a place I'm always dropping stuff, so it can't have been there the whole time...

I was exaggerating a bit when I claimed no one complains about it. My point is comparatively a lot fewer people complain about Star Wars than have been complaining about Avatar. :monster:

Avatar: pretty much what everyone else said about it.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: I thought it was a strange story but it was an entertaining movie.

Daybreakers: it's one big meh, but I liked watching vampires exploding.

Sherlock Holmes: it wasn't OMFG AWESOME but I really liked it.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to kindly ask you to cut that shit out.

I've seen quite a few bad movies and Max Payne is one of them. It'd badly written, and directed.

Not a big fan of SWs either. But expressing a dissenting opinion about that is fighting a losing battle.

I still disagree on the basis that I liked it. I would still prefer the 1 to 1 conversion of game to movie, but things like that just don't happen.

LOL, fair enough.

So, Origin - meh. Not a bad film, I guess, but I never cared for the characters, and the action was all pretty sterile (ironically). If you want an environmental fable, go watch Princess Mononoke - more sympathetic characters, more visceral action, and giant talking wolves.
