@Clarky: or kicking some person's wardrobe in order to get an elixir...or rummaging through their houses for items...all that and he won't even pick up the blasted megaphone...shame on him.
@Terrafig: I don't mind the puzzle but for some reason everytime I get into a battle there I jump about a foot in the air when I hear the battle music, not really sure why it just always seems to startle me in that one spot
@Tets: OMG, I had to think about that for a minute and then I realised you're completely right woah I wouldn't have even noticed if you hadn't pointed it out
I never really thought about this but it seems the ground surrounding Midgar is black due to the extreme mako use in the area which has killed that part of the planet. I previously thought it was because the terrain was rough or I didnt pay any attention to it at all.
Im just running around the Eastern Continent enjoying a wonderful false sense of freedom and choice today's Final Fantasy games dont even bother to give anymore. Boy do I miss discovering minature towns/cities on the world map

...Ok I can sort of hear it, but it requires effort. Sounds indeed like the "who are you" and "who am I" are sped up versions of the main theme. I haven't put too much thought into the reoccurring themes of the original soundtrack.
There's a lot of tracks on the soundtrack that have some of the main theme in them. The slums one I didn't realise but I new about "who are you" and "Who am I", its more obvious in themes like "Anxious heart" "On that day 5 years ago" and "Dear to the Heart" oh and the good old airship theme of course. There's about 8-10 songs in the soundtrack all with some variation of the main theme in there.
If you listen to most of the FF soundtracks there's always a reoccurring song in a different amount of variations, it's something I love about the FF soundtracks that they can vary the same theme but still make it sound different at the same time
Anxious Heart? Yeah I suppose it does have a little when you think about it, I can also hear the world map theme in it if you listen carefully enough but only a little bit.
I'm at the 64th floor now. Took the stairs. Usually I just charge in, but this time I wanted to mix things up a little. The German translation changes "retard" into a boring "idiot". I am disappoint.
Got all the coupons from the 63rd as well. Same as everyone else, the solution to this puzzle seems to be forever imprinted in my mind.

You'll notice the "wasteland" tiles appear everywhere on the world map where a currently-operating Mako Reactor is (Midgar, Junon, Fort Condor, Corel). It does make me wonder if Mt. Nibel always looked like that or if it's due to the reactor.
As for music, yeah it's only in recent years that I picked up on more of the subtle motifs in VII's soundtrack. I also liked that Beyond the Wasteland in Advent Children hints at Sephiroth's theme as well during the drumbeat bit.
And holy crap did that puzzle on the 63rd Floor absolutely baffle me as a kid. In entering, I usually go up the stairs because it makes more sense to me that they would be successful. ...not that dashing up 59 stories is particularly believable, just that charging in and then going unmolested for the rest of the way makes Shinra look REALLY REALLY incompetent.
Ugh...I lost my notes for this checkpoint. SOMEONE 'tidied' them! People have got to learn to leave my business papers alone! So apologies if parts of this make no sense.
Floor 64: Ah the gym. Pretty sure its not a good idea to work out in your work clothes, going to be sweaty smelling for the rest of the day. I used to imagine that the showers here were unisex, which led to all sorts of hilarious and erotic situations Good fun rooting in the lockers, and I suppose the megaphone is a slight clue to Cait Siths identity.
Floor 65: I hate this puzzle, more than I hate the coupon puzzle. Its not much of a puzzle is it? As you have no real way of knowing which chests open unless you're following a guide. I guess they were all burnt out coming up with Dominos puzzle eh? Lazy!
Floor 66: Where the action happens! I find it odd (if amusing) that the Shinra excecs put up with toilet stink filtering into their conference room. Maybe President Shinra doesn't give a shit because his cigars mask the stink for him? Nice to get a snapshot of the dynamic here. Palmer is hilarious....another sinecure! I don't know why he's bothered about the space program budget, he still gets to sit on his fat arse and eat lard all day! I'm speculating that he's one of the Presidents old buddies from School. Maybe Palmer used to 'fag' for him? (I'm not being homophobic - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fagging)
I'd find it hard to believe anyone who didn't take an instant dislike to Scarlet the 'Queen of the Harpies' Shes not sexy, shes a hag. If you got up close you'd see she has all lines around her collagen enhanched lips...like a cats arsehole!
Hojo fails at science here. If hes saying Aeris is 18% inferior to Ifalna, and that the research would take 120 years because of that. Breeding her (with a cat/dog or otherwise) is only going to produce even more inferior specimens.
Why can't he admit hes just a filthy poivoit?
Floor 67 - Really annoyed at myself for forgetting to steal the Hardedge from a SOLDIER 3rd. It doesnt really matter much as I was overlevelled anyway but it sticks in my craw dammit!
OCTO'S TENUOUS FFVII MOVIE CONNECTIONS™ #3 Hmm, that containment unit for Jenova looks kinda familiar
From Akira again, this is the containment unit for Akira's remains, its much bigger than Jenovas, which is ironic when you see what those remains actually consist of. Anyway I'm guessing containment units such as this are pretty popular in Japanese Sci-fi....they never seem to work though!
Phew...and I'm going to take another break here before I bore you all to death!
Floor 65: I hate this puzzle, more than I hate the coupon puzzle. Its not much of a puzzle is it? As you have no real way of knowing which chests open unless you're following a guide. I guess they were all burnt out coming up with Dominos puzzle eh? Lazy!
It's puzzleish in the sense that you have to open the chests in the correct order but not really considerin you can just run around mashing the circle button at each one until it opens
In terms of next checkpoint I'd say give everyone another couple of days and then move on, getting through Shinra HQ in one sitting is quite long, I look forward to finding out where our next checkpoint is though. Is anyone going to do the first Fort Condor mission considering its more an optional place to visit until disc 2
I've finally gotten myself to do it!! Again, like the last time, I'll write as I go...
I decided to go through the front door. Hopefully I'll go up, then go down and climb the stairs... never done that, and thought it could be fun! I'm reading number 2 of the Turtle Paradise flyer... and by the way, I was reading some pieces of dialogue, and it's horribly translated!! I don't know how I was able to understand something when I was younger. My knowledge of English lets me see through MANY mistakes and sentences that would otherwise make no sense at all.
Damn I didn't have eyedrops! I bought some... Into the elevator I go!! Easy fights here... I still wanted to do them It's good for stealing some carbon bangles!! (So far I got one, let's see if we can get more!).
By the way, I always used to do "races" against Tifa and Barrett, when climbing the stairs! And while climbing them now I thought... the fact they replicated the actual number of stairs that would be needed, real size, makes you feel the "pain" of Cloud & co climbing it. And it makes you feel "fuck it, I'm leaving", but then, as Tifa illustrates... taking as much time going down as it took going up? Damn! Always loved this.
Random fun note. The "Mighty Grunt" enemy is translated in Spanish as ""Gruñido poderoso", which would be something like "Powerful Grunt". Nothing strange, right? Well, when I said "grunt", I meant... the kind of grunts you do when you fight. Yeah, Spanish translation rocks. And the translators' English level too
Alright... we're at ShinRa's proper HQ now... floor 60!! Alright, Metal Gear Final Fantasy cleared. At 2nd try, I'll admit (on my first try I decided to go check how far I could walk around without being seen... Ha!). Floor 61... I remember being all like "WTF?!" when I got the first card... it's still quite silly. I love it. Floor 62! Gotta love good ol' mayor, and his never-changing password (Too much work translating useless texts on the library? Lazy translators ). Floor 63!! Like many here, the solution to this puzzle is forever engraved on my mind. Couldn't forget it even if I wanted to.
Floor 64, classic; Cloud hitting the vending machine. Even ShinRa's vending machines are evil!! And what kind of drink would cost 250gil? Damn. Fortunately after a quick nap we're going to Floor 65... unlike other people here, I never had any problem with it; I just moved from chest to chest and kept training some fits, which is fine for me. Then room 66 and some bathroom action!! Why the slum music while in there? Absolutely no idea, a mystery for me... It's interesting about how the President wants to raise the taxes and give this extra benefit to Reeve and Scarlet. Seems like an odd choice, to say the least. If he had chosen Heidegger, he could use that to tell the citizens their taxes are funding their "police force", which would go well along his plan of making the inhabitants think ShinRa's good, etc.
By the way I'll quote Barret and say "That dirty #$*$^". Gotta' love FFVII swearing!! First glimpse of Hojo; that man's crazy! And my question is; if Aeris' scan should last 120 years... how did they manage to scan Ifalna? ...Whatever.
Hell yeah!! First fight on Floor 67 and it's against 3rd Class SOLDIERs! It's hard to steal the sword from them, though. So I bid farewell to the Buster Sword before leaving Midgar, and will start using the Hard Edge. Second fight and... yey, I can steal another carbon bangle! And yay, another bangle! Good, good, everything's going according to my plan... hoho.
I've always loved how Cloud gets behind a wooden box. Like, what? It's impossible that he wouldn't be seen. Absolutely ridiculous. I've thought that ever since my first playthrough. And it's great how Barret goes "It's got no head. Shit's stupid, let's move on." And we're at Floor 68 already...
Fought against the famous specimen and saved Aeris. Off we go!! I have now ALL my materia equipped, and not a single free space (And a 4th carbon bangle, meanwhile... going to equip it to Aeris). I love Rude going "Can you please push 'up'?" Fantastic, Rude, you rock. (Mistranslated in Spanish as "Ruda". What the hell; I didn't even remember that).
And then... jailtime! Shit hits the fan. Sort of. Things start getting odd here with the whole Sephiroth thing. I always thought the change of looks in the scenario (blood and all) looked quite cool, to be honest. And the change in monsters and music was quite fitting, too, if rather unexplained (at least on the monster side).
And by the way, I'm seeing the way Tifa lies down on the "bed" in the jail, and I just can't picture her being the "motherly" type she is in Advent Children Complete. I seriously hope she goes back to her "original" self if they ever do a sequel. Seriously, Tifa should go back to what made her popular; and that is not being a mother, but rather, a brawler, even if a feminine one.
Oh, and complete random, but I've decided to save on EVERY save point in the whole game! (Done it so far with this playthrough).
The president's dead! Surprise. I wonder how many times he's died in my place already? And Rufus is quite badass. Period. I don't care he's "a bad guy", he's still really cool, y'know?
And the introduction the group makes to Rufus... pitiful, absolutely pitiful!! It's like "Former 1st class SOLDIER!", then you think that's okay, but once Aeris goes with "Flower girl in the slums", and Red states he's a specimen for investigation... you know you're pretty much laughable. I love those moments in FFVII.
And it may be random too, but I enjoy running around as Aeris. I find her running animation to be sort of cute. Probably because of her tail moving around or something.
Nowadays I always get my materia ready before entering the elevator, but I used not to. Fun times, fighting with only Barret being able to hurt the thing (and Red with his limit break!).
Yay!! High-quality video+Bike chase! BIKE CHASE! Love it to pieces. And I always will. And, finally... oh glory oh joy!! The Overworld theme! Love it. Without any doubt, the best of the series (my opinion, so hey). It's just so long, with many different parts... Suddenly, after the HUGE Midgar, you get thrown in the middle of a vast world. And Midgar is but a little point on this world (the most important point, perhaps, but still small when compared to the whole planet). At that point you can't even imagine the adventures that lay ahead... And thus concludes my 4th chapter!
Coming out of the caves I decided not to do the FC side mission. Every playthru id complete it for Red XIII's 'Magic Comb', but for this playthru Im keeping all the char. to their default weapons and decided to go with static materia setting.
I actually like the mini game, I try to completely overload the area with soldiers so I can take out the commander without getting into a normal battle with him so I believe I will be going for it this time around. That's something I guess to also consider during checkpoints, I mean Gongaga during my first playthrough I bypassed completely because I didn't notice it, its kinda optional too, like you don't have to go there unless you want to fight the Turks and get extra info on Zack.
I think theres about 5 or 6 optional Fort Condor battles, I only found this out from reading a FAQ A few of them can only be done at certain times and would involve a fair amount of backtracking. So for the purposes of this thread I guess people can include them if they want or not as the case may be.
Anyway, I'm going to finish up with this checkpoint and in future I'm going to try and be more concise!
Hojo's experiement was doomed to failure. Besides the fact that interspecies breeding DOES NOT WORK I don't think Red or Aeris we're really in the mood to get it on. If Hojo had kept up to date on his hentai reading he would know that some sort of aphrodisiac drug or ointment would be required. This is why he is a second rate scientist
I kept tifa in my party because I want her date. The battle with HO512 wasn’t too hard, just kept pummeling him with limits and fire.
I think that Hojos assistants are dressed inappropriately for lab technicians. They’re wearing suits, and in retrospect the blocky character design makes it look like theyve tucked their pants into their shoes
Rude is pretty deadpan ‘can you press up please?’ And Clouds reaction ‘Turks? Must be a trap!’ Well no shit Sherlock, you figure that out on your own? No attempt to fight them either...after all we’ve just been through! I love Tseng being evil and rubbing it in here ‘Must have been a real thrill for you. Did you enjoy it?’ <3<3
President Shinra doesn’t half go on doesn’t he? ‘Bring the prisoners to my office so I can reveal my evil plans to them for no raisin! Mwa ha ha ha!’
In the cells I made sure to choose the options to give me highest affection with Tifa, talking to Aeris last. Also I must have said ‘Leave it to me’ about 15 times to Tifa (apparently it raises her affection by 1 each time- if only real life relationships were so easy!)
Now heres something weird.
Given what I now know about Sephiroth and his hatred of Cloud, and also how the Sephiroth right now is a part of Jenova (presumably her head) I got to thinking. Sephiroth somehow knew that Cloud was in that cell? How?
Very creepy music here, which makes it a shame that it gets used in the Ghost House later on The massive claw marks in the wall should have been a clue that all was not as it seems.
President Shinra skewered to his desk. Other than the dramatic effect, I’m not sure why Sephiroth bothered killing the President. I’m not sure why he left his sword behind either!
That line about Rufus ‘ never bleeding or crying’ has always irritated me. 1) I’m not convinced that it wasn’t a mistranslation of some sort 2) I’m not convinced that it wasn’t meant in reference to Sephiroth 3) It just seems bizarre to mention it, aside from what we know post AC, Rufus never exhibits any superhuman qualities
Anyway, it seems pretty odd that Cloud would take on Rufus alone, and even odder that Barret would let him. On the way downstairs Aeris stops and says ‘Cloud......I just thought of something!’ What? What did she think of? Was it just an attempt to wait for Cloud herself? That Tifa then puts the kibosh on?
Hundred Gunner and Heli Gunner always used to cause me problems because I had never set my materia up. This time it was a pushover though, everyone is over levelled.
The same for Rufus, kinda feel bad for Dark Nation – took him out first. Rufus seems unaffected by the loss of his pet. Maybe this was what was meant by ‘not crying’
Anyway, that taken care of we head down stairs for another awesome cutscene! The way Aeris walks always gets me...did they forget how to animate walking or something? Its like shes wearing lead shoes. She was walking just fine in the opening FMV!
OCTO'S TENUOUS FFVII MOVIE CONNECTIONS™ #4
Akria, again. Riding on a motorcycle smacking the shit out of everyone is pure Akira
The music in this part is awesome too, I just hope it doesn’t get butchered in a remake - the worst I could imagine would be a piano version >_< - this track is electro through and through!
Motorball – another boss that used to cause me problems due to me being clueless and underlevelled and it being so damn fast. Now I know better. I kicked its ass!
And so our true journey begins. We see the world map for the first time and realise how damn small Midgar is. Obviously a problem with scale there. I think in a remake they would make Midgar take up a space the size of FFVIII’s Esthar on the world map (assuming they kept a world map! *grumble grumble*)
FIFTH CHAPTER: Kalm the Fuck Down, It's Only a Detour
CHECKPOINT LOCATION: Arriving in Junon.
-I love Kalm, man. As much as I love Midgar even more, I do love Kalm. It's just so nice and sleepy and chill. It doesn't expect anything from you and you don't expect anything from it. There's just really something about how Final Fantasy VII really makes you feel like you're 'at' these places. Even with all of the modern entries, this is one of the only titles where I could literally imagine myself plopping down on a bed in Kalm with a Materia I bought a few hours earlier on the table.
-The iconic, and dreaded, for FFVII veterans, FFVII flashback sequence. I'll let you guys fill in the blanks on this one yourselves. Thoughts?
-This is a perfect time to branch out a little bit! Grab some Enemy Skills! Get yourself acquanted with some Chocobos! Go to Fort Condor! Recruit Yuffie!
First Chapter: The Avalanche of the Slums - When I first played this I wanted to know what was all the hype about this game, this was my first rpg game and I never liked role playing games. This game changed that forever. My reaction towards the sword, cool as hell and barret who curses was shocking to me back then. I didn't get the potions in the beginning and i continued until the boss. I died 10 times on the scorpion boss and decided ask my friends how to beat it. Sector 7 slums wasn't fascinating, just continue on to the story.
Second Chapter: The Flower Girl
Still talking about back in 97, I first saw aeris I thought ok a pink clothed girl fixing flowers, didn't care much about it and saw the bad guys called the turks went after her and basically followed the story until i did the barrels, I messed up on that and got lucky she survived the fights. I had no leveling strategy since I didn't know I was suppose to do that. Had to take aeris to her house, saw some stores try to buy something couldn't afford it. Slums was just another scene to me and i missed the cover materia near aeris house and went to wall market.
Third Chapter: Pimps, Tricks, and Falling Pizzas
Again in 97,I went to Wall Market I got lost and ask my friends where to go. It got hard for me till I went all the way to Corneo place, found out i need to crossdress. Soon this game was full of puzzles, wasting gil on food, getting a guy something from
the vending machine, doing squats, talking to a father to make a dress, took a long
time on this one. I didn't care who corneo picks at that time cause I was feeling
very down about the game however I felt I needed to do this right. I went to the
bumblee inn, and back then didn't know was this about, all i know is i had to get
some make-up for my face. Picked a door and I thought good i picked right door till he was having his seziures. Then woke up being slapped by a bunch of guys. I swear i was never going in there again. Didn't steal from bandits since there were stealing
from me and i ran away every time i saw them.
Fourth Chapter: Shinra Tower
When I first played i took the stairs, and I lost many times after sneaking in
with cloud, tifa, and barret. Took the elevator and did the puzzles failed
the guessing game for the elemental materia, messed up the key doors for the
four slots, and I was stuck here but leveled up alot. Still had my original
weapons and was cool to see a talking red wolf name Red XIII. Boss fights were tough
for me when barret was the only one to shoot that long range and red XIII can
use his limit break for the long range and aeris to cure only and not fight.
Took me a while about the toilet, had to go up the ceiling to overhear the
shinra guys. Story was getting great, theres blood stains in the floor,
no music made it scary when fighting mobs at that point. Rufus and a dog
was weird, but kicked his ass. Motorcycle chase was the shit, messed up had
play it over and over till i get it right and beat the boss. Was frustrated
that i couldn't kill that boss after the chase but finally i got thru.
End of the road I pick aeris and tifa to kalms.
Fifth Chapter: Kalm the Fuck Down, It's Only a Detour
I remember I first passed the kalms and went to the chocobo area, talk to a
chocobo and got my first summon. I was excited to tried it out, awesome.
Then I try to pass the swamp with the damn snake and died. Didn't save /sigh
did the motorcyle chase again beat the boss again, then got the summon
and finally realized I'm suppose to go to kalm which i passed. Finally
got to kalm got into the story, cloud and sephiroth fighting a dragon, got
really hyped now on this game cause I wanted to be like sephiroth. Finally
realized im suppose to level up and master the materia. I keeped leveling up
till I got to the snake. Still couldn't beat him, found out need a chocobo
to pass the lake. Was hard at first but finally got the chocobo and head straight
thru the lake without touching the snake. Saw the turks, not really caring about
them back then. But remember that Tsueng slapping Aeris, so i got pissed about that.
Went to Fort Condor and again got lost I was suppose to pay there funding? I pay
the soldiers and basically wasted my whole gil on this Fort Condor. The boss
went all the way to the top and had to fight the boss. Didn't get yuffie around fort condor, I did found her but i messed up the procedures on how to get her. So tried again after the junon part.
