Vanitas was designed by MX to control the Unversed, when he died, they ran out of control, spilling over the worlds of light like AIDs in a hooker's vagoo. Xehanort and friends after a while begun experimenting with the Unversed through people and then somewhere before KH, they evolved to heartless? Makes more sense, But why would Master X want to balance the universe? isn't a universe full of light good? or is it something like the morale 'too much of a good thing is bad'??
Sounds like a speedy evolution process if you ask me~!

) and Ansem's apprentices were experimenting on people in regards to darkness in their hearts, they were already Heartless at that time. No longer being Unversed.
As for your question about wanting to balance the universe?
If the world is just full of nothing but light, that makes the darkness hungrier. The brighter the light, the darker the shadow. As stated in Xehanort's report, a strong light, makes a strong darkness. And if there's too much light in the world, everyone would want the power of its absolute purity. And in the end, no one would be able to rest.
The good thing about darkness is that allows you to rest, and gives tone and variance to everything in existence. If there's nothing but light, there'd be no variance or color. It'd be boring and dull.
And I want to quote something from FFXII, that eerily sums up everything regarding Birth By Sleep's backstory.
Diakon Entite Bestiary entry said:
"In ages past, the gods took to the air and from here shone with a brilliant light, so that Man might not walk forever in shadow. The light drove out cold, thinned fear's grim pall, and purified that which was corrupt and evil. Yet Man was not pleased. He grasped for the light, seeking to make it his own. He wanted to be a god. So the gods quit their heavenly seat, and created the diakon entites, whereby to judge Man with a fierce and holy righteousness. Thus did Man seize light, and in so doing, lose the favor of the gods."
Great minds have achieved spiritual awakenings with peyote. And its pretty much understood that you can reach a true spiritual enlightenment through peyote, so I consider that a very good thing.
This brings the cool story back to Erauqs (or however the hell you spell his name) was his ideals really REALLY worth maintaining? or was MX's Xanatos Gambit a good bid to bring balance back to the universe?
I do like it, don't get me wrong Inspite being riddled with overdramatic dialogue and the concepts involved being as impenetrable as a cement chastity belt, Birth by Sleep (and Kingdom Hearts in general) is definitely one of SE's more creative stories.

Eraqus may have been incorrect about how to maintain universal balance, but at least the guy didn't go around spreading chaos and bedlam to prove a point. In the end, one does have to focus on cultivating the light and sustaining it, so he was right in that regard.
Xehanort, while correct in that the world needs both light AND dark to survive, was incorrect in thinking he needed to actively go cultivate DARKNESS, go around spreading hell around the universe, and play god, to make it better. Darkness doesn't need help growing. People are inherently bad and shit all on their own. They don't need help from old, ugly assholes like him
And I'd say the fact the universe came close to being consumed by darkness twice thanks to his asshatery, is proof that Xehanort's noble intentions are definitely no longer the impetus of his goals anymore.
@Ashes
LOL, agreed. It takes some explaining but I guess once you get in the whole world mythology, eventually it starts making sense.
Then logically there was no point for MX to do his Xanatos Gambit, it's already at a natural balance. He clearly messed the lives of every disney, square (and possibly Warner bros. look at the KH III trailer) worlds out there.
Well there was an imbalance, but Xehanort was pretty damn arrogant in thinking he had to do something about it to change it, or literally destroy the entire system just to rebuild it in his image.
Chronologically, Nobodies are the new strain of Unversed-like species right? they seem to be spawning during Xehanort and friend's era or Sora's first adventure at best.

you mean, they're the newest enemies? Yes, they are. But they aren't related to Unversed, or Heartless at all. They're the left over bodies of people who lose their hearts to the darkness.
Unversed are born from the darkness of people's hearts. Heartless are born from the darkness swallowing people's hearts completely and taking them.
Nobodies are the resulting by product of a person getting their heart ripped out of their body. The body and life energy is left behind to function without its heart.
In more relatable, mythological terms, think of nobodies as people who've lost their soul.
This is already known, Ryu. Although I'm not sure of the specifics, basically
when Vanitas possesses Ven and is killed, Ven goes comatose, and to heal his heart of the damage (specifics, I'm unclear) he sends his heart to sleep within Sora.
Yeah, though my question is whether Sora was a shard before that or not. I'm more curious why Ven's light went into Sora, I know that it did. I'm curious why.
Incidentally, Xehanort couldn't be much more Xande if he tried.
Further KH=FF3 proofz.
All we need is Sora or Ventus in an Onion Knight outfit.
, think of the timeframe. He was an old man around the time Sora and Riku were four-five years old.
I hope they don't, but what if they pull a "Luke I am your father" and make Xehanort related to one of them? The timeframe fits for him to be a grandfather or even father to one of them.

I'm glad I'm not the only person that thought of this. I could see them playing this particular card over the issue of Riku's ancestry.
I'm not entirely sure I'd be disappointed with this though (oh no, what bold hypocrisy from a man that constantly damns SE for their lack of creative ability). Normally I would be, but it could work within the context of Kingdom Hearts. Cliches like that lend themselves well pretty well to this series.
Lets be fair here, he isn't exactly wrinkly is he? Besides the inconspicuous bald of evil, which he shares with Lex Luthor, who isn't an old man either.
I had a dream last night that in Kingdom Hearts 3 at the end of the game some mystery figure came up to Sora and told him to wake up or come out or something.. .then Sora like split into two people. Turns out Sora had this other person inside of him this whole time and like... this person had grown really old, and like gone on some trip with the old keyblade masters. Somehow putting him into Sora's body made him young again.
Then something about them traveling to the moon and the final boss was a giant Master Xehanort possessed by Riku (Yeah I didn't get it either...)
