So... umm... some people have been claiming that because Cloud can say either Aerith or Tifa is his girlfriend, it proves something of a canon.

From what I read, it seems that when asked if Tifa is Cloud's girlfriend, Cloud says something like "Are you stupid?" while if it were Aerith, it would be something like "Yes" or something. Apparently, anyone who even thinks that Tifa is Cloud's girlfriend is stupid because Cloud says so, and it makes Clerith canon.

I'm not making this up.

Now, I just found this on some stranger's blog or whatever, since I've taken to surfing the net for some Clerith proofs/debunking of Cloti. Out of boredom (my fingers ache from too much Duodecim).

But can I get sauce of Cloud's alleged "Are you [a] stupid [Cloti]" line from the script itself, or can someone just go and tell me how this is illogical, because I know it already sounds as ridiculous as it is, but I got curious as to what you people would say and if Cloud even says this at all. Or if I got it the other way around... or... I don't know. Please?

If I recall correctly, Cloud says "I'm not interested" here, right? I've seen this as Clerith proofs as well.

Apparently, reading all those essays is enough for me to doubt my knowledge of the FF7 world. Maybe I should stop.

I haven't seen any mention of Duodecim debunking, though. I'd love to see some. Clotis are going overboard with the romance stuff, when it's just Cloud dying for Tifa.

Speaking of Duodecim... about this optional thing. I'm confused. I've seen claims that optional date =/= default date. It seems that because the Aerith date is the default one, it's the canon one.

Let's say it was canon, what kind of bearing does it being the default scene have on the LTD? I've seen some people confusing the definition of optional and default, and it's confusing me now too. For example, the date is optional, but it's the default one = canon. High affection scene is not optional =/= default... and canon? Right?

Default and Canon are not the same. A good example is Breath of Fire. The default ending has you kill the goddess in a rather simple boss fight. The canon ending has you complete a sidequest to unveil her real form and lay the utter smack down on that.

So what is default is not automatically canon. Often times, default is emphatically acanon.

Also =/= is typically understood as representing the slashed equal or 'not equal' symbol (also rendered != as well). Made your question a bit confusing to read.

Prince of Persia Warrior Within is another clear example. Normally, you'll kill the Empress of Time at the end. Alternatively, you can save her and kill the Dahaka instead. And then Prince of Persia 3 opens with him returning with the Empress, so the optional ending is obviously the canon one.

That said, I'm still inclined to say the Aerith date is the "canon" one, just because she was the most forward, it puts the first concrete doubt that Cloud isn't who he says he is, and it makes the most thematic sense since she dies so soon after for maximum tragedy.

This. I always felt it was a little OOC for Tifa to drag Cloud out on a date, while with Aerith it felt natural given her forwardness/confidence. For that reason I've always thought of Aerith's date as the 'canon' one, it just fits better.

Avoiding the battle that *clashed with his feelings, he saved Tifa who was attacked by his homeworld's arch enemy Sephiroth, and is then ousted as a traitor.
