Oh yeah, movie itself was fairly entertaining. A couple of annoying cliches here and there however.
The action was good though and the visuals were brilliant.

Just saw this today, and LOVED it. Kept giggling at the cliches/ cheesiness (which I think is intentional) but it's a lot better than what I expected.

I didn't like Mako too much-- she behaves like someone who just learned English and couldn't express herself better >_> Young Mako is such a good actress though. And I liked the scientists, didn't think they were annoying at all.

I wish there was more of Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon though.

Did anyone else pick up on FF7 references? Doubt they were deliberate, but still. Like the girl named Mako, Ron Pearlman's Vincent shoes, the way one of the Kaiju was taken out like Bahamut Shin... ok, maybe that's a stretch.

Or the Kaiju blood looking like mako.. jk :awesomonster:

Throwing it out there, Rinko Kikuchi's first language is Japanese and her second language is English, and her speaking proficiency in the film is pretty close to what she speaks like in real life.

^Yeah I get that, but there were scenes where I felt like she wanted to say something but just went "fuck it, I'm just gonna let my face do the talking" >_> I dislike her performance.

It's kind of nitpicking here but that's type of decision is something that's made by the script/director, not just the actor's performance - unless she was improving on those scenes by not saying her lines. It's totally fine if you didn't dig her performance, but based on what you've said it seems more like you were missing that she is actually bilingual, or misinterpreting the character direction of using expression over speech for a flaw in her performance of that character.

To me, having a background in speaking with a lot of Japanese exchange students who don't always speak quite enough English and I don't speak quite enough Japanese to convey specifics of certain topics, this type of interaction becomes something that you end up relying on more because it's largely universal. So, it makes sense for the idea of a bilingual character to interact this way, and was used really extensively with her (plus it's a bit of a cultural thing, too). For example - the little nuances of her expression being disappointed after each match in the scene where they're choosing Raleigh's copilot, and him picking up on it, because he's not expecting a verbal response from her (for me it was also an indicator that they'd be more Drift compatible).

This is never commented upon in the movie, but
I wonder if Mako and Raleigh were compatible despite her thirst for revenge because he had that emotion in him too?

I think that
the reason that their first Drift is so strong that the failsafes won't break it is because he triggers is with the flashback of his brothers' last memory that triggers the pain-of-loss-into-hatred-and-desire-for-revenge that coincides with Mako's emotional state with the memory of Onibaba's attack on Tokyo and being saved by Striker in Coyote Tango.

Drift compatibility seems to be composed of being able to relate to someones experiences, reading their general thoughts and emotions (what the 1-on-1 combat test is for - reading body language, and why it's, "a dance, not a fight"), and being comfortable with that level of a connection and trusting your partner.

This also gets into why Stacker can Drift with Chuck - he's spent YEARS focused on becoming that fixed point that he yells at Raleigh about, and that allows him to stay focused on the task at hand and not carry his own emotional baggage into the Drift.

@X: I'm aware that the character is bilingual (so am I, and I've resorted to expression over speech countless times before-- I know just how essential that is). While I didn't expect her to be impeccably fluent (because that would take away from her character), I expected her to interact a bit better than that, having worked in the Corps, etc

By my own standards of course. I'm not sure if that's exactly how the writers want her to be.

That makes me very happy and the movie has already made $230,000,000 without counting China.

That's so odd, because the film is doing better overseas than it did here, and I've still got 2-4 showtimes for it at basically all the main theaters in my area. That's so obnoxious. :\

It's still showing here, I should go see it :monster:

Today I'm going to see "The Wolverine" though. Not particularly excited about the movie itself, but possible naked Hugh Jackman; you understand.
