Also- holy moses, this movie is 100% more stunning in IMAX.

Definitely stunning. I actually would've preferred if I'd seen it in normal IMAX as opposed to the 3D one. There wasn't really much 3D to be jumping up and down about.

Perhaps my comment along the lines of "don't waste your time" might have been abrupt. I was just mainly disappointed with the lack of character development. They were quite forgettable, bar the big general guy. I've heard talks of a sequel and I'd lack to see this rectified if there is one.

I think that it's more that the story that Pacific Rim tells is about the events that are important to those characters withing the context of that story. Checking out the prequel comic will give you a good feel for the fact that there's more to the characters, but everything that's detailed there feels like it would've seem forced to try to tell it in the film (Stacker has a quote about not telling his whole life story that seems apropos). I actually didn't feel that the characters who played prominent roles were underdeveloped, and most of the minor characters were at least briefly fleshed out. (Though feel free to disagree).

I saw the movie yesterday, I'll make a proper post about it later but I will say I absolutely loved it and Ami's crazy. :monster: The fights were amazing, it was like the love child of The Big O, Sym-Bionic Titan and Power Rangers. Two things I really didn't like: the two scientists, Charlie Day was bearable but the dude from TDKR was completely annoying and over the top, I just wanted to beat him up with that walking stick he had. The other thing I didn't like was the lack of screentime for the teams from Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon.

One of the most awesome things about the movie to me was Ellen McLain
in her GLaDOS voice, it really wasn't change after all. You're basically listening to GLaDOS minus the catty sociopath tendencies except for one occasion, after Gipsy Danger's almost blows up the base and it's shut down you can hear her say "Would you like to try again?", that was definitely something GLaDOS would say and I loved it.

After a day I figured out what I didn't like particularly
I think there was too much time devoted to the scientists and Hellboy, I mean all the Kaiju mind-meld doesn't need too much details and they were attempting to insert as much as humor as possible. It turned out irritating to me. I think it ate a lot of time when it could have been used to develop the main characters more and give the other pilots more screentime and dialogue. Also, we learn Hellboy had medled with a Kaiju and we never get to know why and how (maybe side materials) but again it ate up too much time when it's not really necessary.

I just got back from seeing it. There was a bit too much of the wacky scientists. I know that's del toro's thing, but it just pierced the bubble of suspension of disbelief.

Did anyone else pick up on FF7 references? Doubt they were deliberate, but still. Like the girl named Mako, Ron Pearlman's Vincent shoes, the way one of the Kaiju was taken out like Bahamut Shin... ok, maybe that's a stretch.

It shouldn't affect sequel potential TOO badly, because of reasons: http://xsoldier.tumblr.com/post/55549741211/seriously-what-the-fuck-america-however-the

Grown Ups 2 opens up with a random deer in Sandlers house that runs around knocking stuff over and pisses on people.

I hate the masses.

ahhhh now this is interesting

I've seen two Asylum films (Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies and American Warships) and they are really, really hilarious. They're so bad they're good.

Just saw it today while in the U.K., basically what I was expecting and I absolutely loved it. While I could how the scientists might not be to everyone's liking I personally enjoyed them. It was essentially all the good and cool cliches and tropes from kaiju/mecha genre films and anime boiled down into a 2+ hour film. Loved that the setting was international in scale and cast. Hope it does well.

Meant to mention this sooner: I know I said I would have a review of this movie coming, but since we ended up discussing it in this month's podcast (recorded last night), I just saved my comments for that. Hopefully that will be up sometime soon.

I really appreciate that article's point about cynicism being the in-thing now. We need another morally conflicted anti-hero like we need a Kaiju falling on our houses.

Sure, "Breaking Bad" and the like are good shows, but, goddamn, how much shit like that do we need? Yeah, we all live in the shades of grey, but it's a spectrum that blends to create that. We all have our darkness and our light. It's really not a bad thing to highlight a focus on the positive things we can achieve when we make the effort, which is why I will always appreciate "My Name is Earl" more than "Breaking Bad."

I... kinda want to see it, but at the same time I kinda want to watch just the 2D version. I wonder if they do that at the cinema nearby... nope. Feck. Well fuck 'em.

I saw the film and man, there is only me wishing in my childish dreams that the jaegers would team with godzilla (2014 or classic) to combat kaijus from both their rogues gallery as well as godzilla's own. But plus points, this film is great and fun for bashing the hell out of monsters and mechs. Story is as good as a mecha movie can get as well with a kaiju film.

Here's a good match for me:

Godzilla vs.
Slattern, the Category V Kaiju and final boss

looking at that alone, I think I want that guy and Kaiser/King Ghidorah to have a shot at big G (2014 or classic) purely to see who would win.

Personally I think Goszilla (aka Gojira) would easily take down any of the Kaiju from Pacific Rim.

I would like to see some of the Mecha characters fight some Jaegers. There are some good giant robots in Godzilla franchise.

That's when you drop your voice a full octave and say,
"Shut the fuck up, 'cause you didn't pay to hear their shitty commentary."

Works for me every time.
