I have long since boarded the Not Giving a Shit Express on this film. No amount of new trailers is going to change that.
Actually seeing it might. But I doubt it.
Right there with you. I'm still trying to feel sold on Andrew Garfield (I don't think you can find somebody who is going to be a better fit than Tobey Maguire), though I respect the humility he speaks with when talking about the role. I mean, the guy even said he cried when he first put on the suit because he loves Spider-Man so much and felt like a better actor should have been wearing it.
I'm still finding it extremely off-the-wall (haha, Spider-Man puns), though, to go back to the drawing board on Spidey after doing three successful films within the same continuity in the past decade -- and then they're going to make his perenially irrelevant parents be the big deal in his past instead of Aunt May and Uncle Ben?
I think origin stories are invariably the best angle to approach super heroes from in film, but, really, Peter's huge mistake with Uncle Ben and the "With great power ..." mantra is the core of the character. It's what defines him. I'm not getting any of that from the bits and pieces we've been shown, so unless it's there and they're just trying to market this in a way distinctly different from the Raimi films in the meantime, I feel like they're doing the equivalent of a Captain America film without Steve Rogers starting out as a scrawny kid.
In fact, the more we've seen, the less interested I have become.
It's hard to sell Pete as that dorky down-on-his-luck guy who deserves so much better when he's starting out with Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone for fuck's sake) as his girlfriend. I get that she's there to offer some sense of stability to Pete's tumultuous life, but he's always had to work for that peace. We may not feel for him as much or -- especially the nerdy down-on-their-luck guys and gals who deserve so much better -- identify with him so readily if he begins with such a good deal.
They've got a hell of a lot of work to do yet if they're going to sell me on this one. My biggest confidence in it stems from Emma Stone's presence. She's also the main reason I feel compelled to see it right now. I love her.
