You pointing out that you are allowed to love more than one person is kind of the point I was getting at with questioning why her loving Cloud would somehow affect her love of Zack.

We've been hit pretty fucking hard with the idea that she loves Zack.
And we've been hit with the idea that she Loves Cloud for whatever value of Cloud you got.

There are suggestions in the various clusterfuck that is the ff7 canon she does love Cloud more, but that's really inconsequential. She loves him "now" and loved Zack "then", I think would be more to the point.

Aerith is in love with Cloud, but the why and how much is Cloud and how much is the projection are what make it very complicated.

Square could blatantly state something like "Although in the beginning, Aerith felt close to Cloud because he behaves like Zack, her interest in Cloud himself grows and is attracted to him." or even "Even though Aerith perceived that Cloud had lost sight of his true self, she still has great affection for him" and they'd still say she only loved him for Zack or that it's complicated or she was projecting or something...

That's what the quote says. Eventually we get to her date where she decides she wants to get to know him because her cetra abilities tell her that the Cloud in front of her isn't the true Cloud. She also decides she needs to once and for all move on from Zack and stop projecting him onto Cloud.

Then she dies.

JFC not this again... Cloud is her beloved, period. He is her beloved... that's what the statement says... that's what it means... period. It doesn't mean... he's a symbol of her beloved, it doesn't mean... she loves Zack... it doesn't mean... anything except... Cloud.. WAS .. HER BELOVED!

Because I'm looking at the context? She's not just blurting it out for no reason and going on and on about how much she loves Cloud and that she's totally over Zack. It's not a statement of 'I'm with Cloud now'.

She's reminded of Cloud and starts thinking about him. Thinks about what he stands for to her, who he was to her. I would be shocked if she thought of this and didn't think 'someone I was in love with/falling in love with'.
