Has anyone made a list of retcons and contradictions within the Compilation and other FFVII material? I honestly can't think of that many major contradictions, but I keep reading about people complaining about these 'contradictions'.

here is my question: if Aerith is in love with Zack and she admits to this (if this is how you see her date with Cloud), then why is it that she later states Cloud is the one she loves? He could have simply been mentioned as someone who was important to her who she cared about greatly that wasn't romantic attachment.

Yes, I realize, this does not mean Cloud lurved her/wanted to bone her/does not like Tifa at all, but it does have implications for Aerith as far as her mind is concerned: she likes Cloud more than Zack, at least enough to mention him as her beloved. Why?

I think that she loved Zack and still does. Yes, I agree that she wanted to move on and that, by admitting that she was starting to see Cloud as someone more than Zack part 2, she was taking a significant step in putting her ex behind her. So I also think she loves Cloud, for all the reasons she's stated before -- she loved him when he was just like Zack, and she loves him now that she realises that he's someone who's more than a person who's just like Zack.

The difficulty I have in the loves Cloud for Cloud part is that she's only ever known Cloud as the Zack-Cloud mix. There's not much of the real Cloud that she's seen that's been separated from the Zack that he'd taken on in the game. So I feel that the 'loves Cloud for Zack' part can't be entirely taken out of consideration where her feelings for Cloud are concerned. 'Loves Cloud for Zack' has ceased to be the major focus of her feelings, but I think it still plays a part.

Well if we're counting Maiden, which I realize we probably aren't, she does say she knew him after the lifestream event and her feelings didn't change so...

But her just saying it in CoLW is enough for me. I trust that she wouldn't say that if she really didn't know the guy anyway.

I think that Aerith was saying, "I love this guy to the level of being my intimate lover while acknowledging that there's more to him that I still haven't figured out yet."

Aerith's feelings for Cloud started from his similarities to Zack and built up on that. By the end of her life, she had started to build up her feelings for him away/apart from his similarites to Zack. Meaning that, where she had pursued the similarities before, she was later starting to seek out the differences. However, even the parts of real Cloud that she may have glimpsed during their interactions with one another were not entirely separate from the Zack-Cloud person that she knew. So ultimately she was in love with the Cloud she knew, the Zack-Cloud person, the one who's at the same time like Zack and isn't.

I thought the Ultimania said that she saw through the facade, but it didn't say that she knew what he was like on the inside.

Personally, I'd always thought she had caught on that he was putting on an act or a front, but her seeing through that facade was only to the extent that she knew there was more to him that hadn't been revealed to her yet. That's why she said she wanted to meet the real him.

Nah it's cool. The Cookie Monster is used so often I can't tell if it's just sarcasm or "fly away newbie fag".

@the cloud/aeris/zack thing; you know, it's true cloud wasn't all that right in the head when she met him, so yeah, she didn't get to know him fully, but it's not like she didn't know anything about the real cloud. she knew enough to know how awkward and socially inept he was, and she liked that.

plus since she already knew what zack was like, and could look into the truth of people, she would probably know real well which aspects were the "zackisms" and which weren't.

what she says can definitely be construed as flirty. It's obvious to her why he would show up and when he says for forgiveness, considering she's the only one there, that should be obvious. She is acting in a matter that is quite flirty, whether you like it or not.
