also, everyone seems to agree that Cloud and Tifa, regardless of how often they saw each other, weren't too close. So why do people say that they "fell in love as children"?

Because by all accounts, they actually did. We know Cloud did before he left. Tifa seems to have done so before the Nibelheim incident.
I mean, we can accept Aerith loving Cloud despite the headfuckery of those two weeks. Accepting awkward teens going head over heels is no issue.

And if Tifa did not know,would make the feelings illegitimate? Aerith loved Cloud without knowing anything about him, and I do not see any problem in it. The same goes for Tifa. In the end she(Tifa) knows better than anyone. In CC we know she's interested in him and he her.

But yet again I'd have to point out there's no evidence to back up the claim they'd ever spoken aside from that night at the well -- not in CoT, not in the flashbacks, not even in any of Cloud's precious memories about Tifa. She even says outright they were never that close, so I doubt they had time to become besties before he left. You can't just say, "Well, I feel like it should have happened," because that's not an argument.

See, I can easily buy these two flirty horny teenagers not getting it on because one of the teenagers? Was raised in a laboratory overseen by Hojo. There's a lot of plausible reasons for Aerith to be skittish about intimacy/sex; even if nothing's stated out right, you can just fill in the blank.

But yeah, I don't think Cloud and Tifa snuck out together. I certainly think the potential was there, because Tifa sneaks out in another part of the Compilation! But there's just no evidence for it having happened afterward. Wouldn't this be an important thing for them to remember in the Lifestream sequence? Tifa isn't told to remind Cloud of when they snuck out together because they liked each other, she's told to tell him of when she looked at newspapers because she wanted to see news of him. Which is sweet, too, but I'd think a memory they both share would have trumped that for a mention when they're rediscovering the past they have in common.

Cloud was kind of stalker-ish. He looked up through her window all the time. That clearly didn't tell her anything about him, since she never got a restraining order. I'm not saying they didn't know about each other at all, but they didn't know each other well.

Besides, since when do you need to know a person to be attracted to them? It's not a contradiction, it's a crush. All the guys liked Tifa, she was the pretty, popular girl in town.

I always saw Cloud and Tifa as a deconstruction of the "childhood friends" romance type. It's only after they deal with their issues and get to know each other better (As show in the Lifestream scene) that I could begin to see then as a couple
