They all just shoved it through babelfish, we know this. They don't know shit about translating because they've always only spoken one language and by the looks of it, they can't even comprehend English.

Hito should have just changed it to "To the woman Cloud was a friend, and sweetheart" at which point the woman could be anyone and Cloud was a nice person to her...which incidentally was also one of the translations I got when I shoved that piece through those online block translators that translate word for word.

That tense thing didn't really make any sense, because the sentence fragment that was posted didn't even have a proper tense. It was incomplete. In Japanese, the tense for joined sentences like that comes at the end. Like that past tense 'was' at the end.

Or that narration stuff. That's pretty simple, basic stuff.

It’s not a matter of Aerith being “sweet” on Cloud. The entire book is in third person. So this sentence has gone farther then what Aerith thinks.

“Cloud was her friend, her beloved — ”

First of all the sentence is in present tense, “was” is supposed to be “is.” Second of all, it’s not Aerith speaking or thinking this, it’s the Author stating a fact.

Since the correct translation is “Cloud is the woman’s friend and lover” it’s not just how Aerith feels it’s what the author is stating.

So the author has done exactly what he wanted the reader to understand. Nojima wrote “Cloud is the woman’s friend and lover” and he meant exactly what he wrote. That Cloud is Aerith’s friend and lover. Simple as that.

I don’t know about you, but where I come from, lover usually indicates a romantic relationship.

The fact of the matter is, beloved cannot be a possible word in this sentence because it’s never used in Japanese.

I spot at least 5 counts of FAIL in this post alone. The author stating a fact?

There can never be a translation, because English words were never used in the Japanese.

Unless, of course, translation is actually relaying ideas from one language to another. And particularlly in literary translations, that doesn't always mean following the Japanese to the letter. Because that's how you get those manga/anime translations that barely look like English.
