Yes, Aerith knew from the start I believe. She went to the church because she could here the planet their and talk to her mother. It was her sanctuary. ^-^
But at one part in VII she denys she is a Cetra to Tseng, which I believe she did so because she didnt' want him to talk her away and she didn't want to be different. Just my speculation though...

Recall that Aerith tells several folks, not just Cloud, after the simple life she so desperately wished to hold on to had pretty much irrevocably ended and shit was hitting the fan. Aerith didn't even want to admit to herself that she was a Cetra in CC, she just wanted to be normal and be with Zack.

And as for 'Why would Aerith be in Cloud's promised land' even if that were the jib of the line, she's there for the same reason she's in Tifa's.

I still believe Cloud and Aerith were destined for each other because of the spiritual connection. I doubt you could have a spiritual connection with someone that isn't your soulmate, really.

Okay... but why do Aerith and Cloud have a spiritual connection? Because Aerith is dead. Cloud also has a spiritual connection with Zack, and well, no-one but Meibito believes they are the true canon in this whole thing, right? You know, I believe that Cloud and Tifa exceeded Cloud and Aerith's 'spiritual' bond even while living. What I mean is not only did they share a physical connection, work through struggles and come clean with their emotions, but Tifa traveled through Cloud's mind and he opened his heart to her. Tifa pieced together the very being that IS Cloud, something that Aerith, Zack, or anyone else couldnt do. Now, if her spiritual connection to him was so strong, why didn't Cloud's heart call out to Aerith's? Why did he hear Tifa's calling out to him? Why didn't Cloud let Aerith into his mind, and why couldn't her powerful connection of love reach him, especially since it goes beyond the grave? The answer is very simple: Cloud and Tifa love one another. It has always been this way. I believe that the spiritual nonsense really is seeing too far into things, especially since the way Aerith is described is as a special memory- a friend/Mother who has died but will never be forgotten. It's typical actions someone gives to a passed away friend or relative. It is certainly not love- well it is, but not the romantic sort if that makes any sense to you.

Oh HELL no. Tifa was never a bitch to Cloud. She ignored him on the day her Mother died?! What a cruel little skank. She didn't realize his feelings for her? Well, that's just all her fault because Cloud made it SO apparent. (no he did not) Cloud got into fights a lot, was socially awkward, and didn't make his feelings clear. I don't understand why people can blame Tifa for not realizing his feelings, especially when she shows how much she really does love him when they make their promise, after he leaves, and so forth especially when she apologizes for not realizing the truth sooner. In which Cloud continues to say that everything is fine, and that they should go home together. IF anyone is at fault, I'd have to give mad credit to Cloud for that one.

Actually, KissTheRain, for me it's you joining an Anti-Cloti Forum that tells me you don't approve of Cloti. Correct me if I'm mistaken but, are you really a neutral? I mean, I've seen fans like yourself who demean Tifa's character but still claim to like her and have no problem with the CT pairing? I don't understand that, could you maybe explain that to me? Since I wasn't too sure about that, I actually went ahead and checked it again and, yep you were indeed correct to an extent. As she grows, Aerith continues to hear the voices of the Planet speaking to her, and along with Tseng's visits (since ShinRa was so interested on her due to her heritage) she does become aware of her heritage as the last Cetra. Still, and as Ryu pointed out, when she was younger she was reluctant to accept this... after all, what she wanted was to live a normal life.

And... if you check the FF7 script, you'll see that its good ol' president ShinRa the first that actually speaks of the Cetra, so the "revelation" (to Cloud and the party) comes from him and not Aerith at first.

Later, Cloud's group was seized and they arrived at the President's office in
handcuffs.

Cloud: (to his folks) You all got caught, too? Where is Aerith!?

President Shinra: In a safe place. She's the last surviving Ancient… Don't you
know? They called themselves the Cetra, and lived thousands of years ago. Now
they are just a forgotten page in history.

Hrmm... Dunno. It's pretty much as you say, if the creator commentaries and the compilation titles and novellas themselves point otherwise, I really can't understand how people can dismiss it and defend such claims. The only explanation I can find for that is that people are either misinformed or in a state of denial. That's just me, though. *shrugs*
