The General Turks Worship Thread

^ I didn't even realise Special Episode: Denzel was on there for about a year!

Reminiscence of Final Fantasy Compilation is on the blu ray ACC disc under special features after the Reminiscence of Final Fantasy and the Reminiscence of Final Fantasy VII. I just watched it again, and they also call Katana Balto, which I couldn't see on those sketches. Balto? Hmm. As far as I remember he's not even in Last Order, and neither are Cissnei, Nunchucks and Knives. I'm still going with calling them what I like and telling myself that these are just the names they used in this instance, as examples of what the player might choose to call them. They use Rod/Crisis for all the BC parts, and we only see Katana/Balto once outside Corel.

It's a good run-through of the compilation. The translations in the subtitles are sometimes different from the ones in the English versions of the games, and different from the on-line translations of Before Crisis that I've seen. One interesting difference from a Turk fan POV is that when Tseng thanks Rufus for saving them from execution, Rufus says, "I didn't do that JUST for you (my capitals). If you insist, your gratitude will be proven by your actions." Makes Rufus a bit less ruthless than in some other versions.

Mind you, some other parts of the subtitles (Crisis Core especially) seem rather poorly translated - I don't speak Japanese, but I mean the English is poor.

In general I like it - it condenses the plot and gives a good sense of the compilation as a whole. (I think it would have been better with the inclusion of Last Order, because, although I don't like what that did with Nibelheim, I love the Turk parts, but I know it's no longer canon.) The only thing I didn't like about the reminiscence was the fact that they use Rod/Crisis all the time which is confusing in the BC parts because his on-sceen character (avatar, sprite whatever it's called) looks too similar to Reno, and it would have been nice if they could have used one of the female Turks. They cut the Crisis Core scene with Zack on the beach with BC so that Rod/Crisis replaces Cissnei, which makes it a lot less poignant imho, although I get that they did it for continuity. Still, Gun, or Shotty, or Knives, or Martial Arts f. would all have done just as well as Rod. I like Rod, but - where are the girls?

Anyway tl;dr: looks as though they might be using the Last Order sketch names, but where did Balto come from? Does this mean we have to start seeing these names as canon? Even if that's the case, I'm sticking with my names and the ones I've stolen from other people;

Balto?

See, on the one hand if the BC Turks had canon names it would be easier to tag them and find images/other material about them. On the other, I feel whatever names Square came up with I would hate.

Also, I wonder if all the fans who named Shurikan Female were like WTF Cissnei? Really?

Anyway, those of you going to Anime North.

Turk Fans meet up Saturday Morning? Does this work?

Once I get in country I'm going to buy a cheap prepaid cell phone and I'll share the number with you guys if you want. (still trying to figure out the cell phone thing - in order to use mine in Canada I'd have to switch to a different plan and I'd lose my unlimited data plan permanently and I like my data)

As I previously stated in the last post when I was around 3/4s of the way through, I remained quite impressed with the story, which was generally coherent, entertainingly suspenseful, and well crafted. Unlike Crisis Core, the narrative made sense without the aid of an Ultimania and the characters acted in realistic, relatable ways (don't get me wrong, Crisis Core had some great moments, but I felt it had tons of squelched potential). It supplemented VII quite nicely, and I enjoyed seeing the Corel incident, for example, be fleshed out politically beyond its original depiction as a senseless act of brutality. I generally enjoy sympathetic stories that break down the black/white axis of good and evil.

I also always love to see the bromantic finishing-eachother's-sentences friendship that Reno and Rude have going on and I can't think of the Turks without it. So many nice little touches of extra characterization in this little game. Rufus' redemption from his douchebaggery in the epilogue is also worth a mention, being that it was quite a graceful way to steal the climax. Regardless if the gesture was solely a political move (though canonically speaking, it is easy to assume that after a long time in captivity he formed a sort of a emotional bond with the organization and Tseng, in addition to his existing affinity with intelligence gathering and the Turk's methods in contrast to his father), as a Rufus fan, I appreciated it even if only for the fact that it was badass and underhandedly redeemed his character.

And,

Tom Felton pulled off the white suit quite stunningly and sported an entertaining expression, so I left his face.

Thank you so much! That Gif is satisfying, even with the OG game art. That just sums up my BC feels.

Then later in the game I want Tseng to grab him and kiss him passionately.

BC - how it makes me feel.

On a serious note, agree with your take on BC. I'm glad to see more love for this game. Maybe one day, if enough people on Tumblr want it, someone wil notice.

Also, didn't we discuss doing a contest? Can we extend that deadline by a month?

Wow I'm the one who brought it up and I completely forgot about it :sadpanda:

I'm alright with extending the deadline. Actually I'm ok with not setting a deadline too. :monster:

Not that I remember from the game. And the gunshotromance bio (which I assume is at least an indirect translation of canon material) doesn't mention any extensive experience outside of shotguns.

Dissidia on Xbox; derp. I love that second one. I think you can see his Staff ID (or something) hanging off the corner of the screen featuring a

. Also, what even is that magazine, I'm guessing a fictional creation; kind of looks like the Shinra logo on it.

And her facial structure does bare quite a resemblance to Genesis.

Ah, Takeshi. I'm spending the summer working my way through his complete oeuvre.

After the fall of Shinra, when Tseng retired from the Turks and became a full-time hardwood floor installer, he liked to take solitary cycling holidays through the countryside, camping rough and brewing his own tea over an open fire.

That Reno cosplayer is amazing.

Wow I didn't even notice that. Good eye.

Ah, Takeshi. I'm spending the summer working my way through his complete oeuvre.

Squueeee :wacky: What films have you watched already?

I found some of his old films in YT (including the one with Jet Li where they crossdressed :monster: ) I can't find his english film with Mira Sorvino anywhere, I really really wanna see that

Hardwood floor installer Tseng.. why did I immediately think of porn..... :desu:

Well, the first was House of Flying Daggers because it was on Netflix. I've seen Red Cliff a few times because I'm completely infatuated with it; I watched Chunking Express and Fallen Angels, and then I got sidetracked by fannish feelings for Tony Leung, and watched Happy Together and something else I can't remember, and now I have In the Mood for Love on order. I want to see Too Tired to Die and Wu Xia next. His role choices are interesting because they're usually oddballs or non-leading men (except for House of Flying Daggers). I'm afraid to say that I think Tony Leung might be the better actor, though. Happy Together was strange but very compelling.

I have Daggers on Blu-ray. I think that was the last time he ever looked like himself.. he looks quite different now. And I do remember reading something about him being picky with roles. He tries not to be typecast as the main love interest/ handsome leading man.

Generally I find Wong Kar-wai films to be too... indulgent. The beginning always intrigues me.. and then I lose interest halfway through. They're quite good though, the stories. IIRC Pulp Fiction was partly inspired by Chungking.

Haven't heard about Happy Together before but it looks promising. Gotta check it out, thanks :monster:

Oh yeah I found this romantic comedy, Lavender (incredibly crappy quality, I don't know how I managed to watch all of it). It's nonsensical but he's really adorable in there

Well, Takeshi's getting older and his face is getting softer, but speaking as someone who's getting older myself, I quite like that. Faces that have been lived in are more interesting. I might watch Lavender tonight, instead of doing all the thing I'm supposed to do!

Great fanart. I love their expressions.
