The Hobbit

I love you.

And if René Goscinny was inspired by Tolkien (which is all too possible), I love Goscinny even more (not that I didn't adore him already...).

Looks like the trailer's coming out tomorrow, so leep an eye out.

The trailer for director Peter Jackson’s upcoming film based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic fantasy novels will make its worldwide premiere on Tuesday, the studio announced today.

A 15-minute satellite feed of the trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will stream at 10 p.m. ET/PT on the night of Dec. 20 and again the following day at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

Also, the new magazine scan images look amazing!

Bagginses... What is a bagginses? :monster:

Like. But, being an ever-present pessimist, this first trailer doesn't look as epic - yet - as the original trilogy. However, I'm pretty sure that's because the CGI team hasn't finished much yet, and this trailer is mainly based on the finished camera footage.

Were they done shooting btw?

I'm feeling really good about this movie. Trailer didn't really show a whole lot, but I'm ok with that. That just means the movie can wow me even more when I see it.

Gotta say, seeing the trailer really filled me me with a sense of nostalgia man.

Trailer doesn't show much. Seems to be a lot of 'revisiting' in it. Doesn't worry me though. The Hobbit seems like a fun story, and I don't think Jackson will ruin it.

Yeah they're putting in a lot of the LotR characters into The Hobbit to fill in that gap where Gandalf goes awol for a big chunk of the book, so

Cate Blanchett, Jonathan Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving etc.

As for it not being as 'epic' the story itself isn't exactly epic when compared with LOTR. Basically its 'Dwarves hunt for treasure - adventure happens - some deaths - giant eagles - and a big ol' dragon' Obviously there is a lot of setting up of the LOTR story too, but yeah. I just hope people don't go expecting it to be exactly as grand as LOTR otherwise I can forsee loads of people whingeing about it :/

I think that the introduction with old Bilbo speaking with Frodo about "not telling him all of the story" is an reference to the fact that The Hobbit films are likely going to be showing a lot of detail into the events that take place during that time to tie the story in to Lord of the Rings, that aren't covered directly in the book. A huge portion of this centers around Gandalf. First of all, there's the reason for the quest, as well as the situation with The White Council and the Necromancer.

I also have a suspicion that (near the later portions of the second film) we'll see the Necromancer becoming Sauron, Gandalf's suspicion of the ring, Aragorn tracking down Gollum, and possibly him visiting Moria. Either way, all of the events are key into leading Gandalf travelling to the Shire at the beginning of LotR, and would give a lot of really excellent backstory for that connection.

Yes there is; at least, by the end of the book,
you get a huge war which they can definitely explode like in LotR itself
. It has great potential. But yeah, I do agree that the Hobbit is more about the adventures of a dozen vertically challenged guys, the personal adventure, instead of the broader, continent-wide one of LotR.

But that's okay. I am confident.

This one's been uploaded months ago and people probably have seen it already but I just recently watched it for the first time... :wacky:

...and I like how Hobbiton is gonna stay there permanently for people to visit. I was planning on going there whenever I get to New Zealand, but previously it was just a mostly torn down set with less than half of the Hobbit dwellings still there. Now it's gonna stay the way it was in the movies. Awesome.

There was one worry I had about the Hobbit being shot in 48fps: That it would look less cinematic and more like a home video. Seems like this is what the movie might indeed look like.

http://www.fuenf-filmfreunde.de/201...ppit-erste-reaktionen-sind-niederschmetternd/

Article's in German but includes quotes in English:

“I didn’t go into CinemaCon expecting to write anything less than great things about The Hobbit, but the very aesthetic chosen by Peter Jackson has made me very nervous about this film. It just looked … cheap, like a videotaped or live TV version of Lord of the Rings and not the epic return to Tolkien that we have all so long been waiting for. I still have hope for The Hobbit, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say my expectations for the film have now been greatly diminished. ”

“I’ve been trying to figure out how to explain to you why this footage looked bad. First it’s worth noting that the CinemaCon honchos bragged that their projection system in that theater was the most advcanced and best ever assembled by man. That’s almost a direct quote. So the presentation would almost certainly never be better than what I saw today.

Second, I must say that it’s possible there will be lots of post-production work done to offset some of the lighting issues. I also assume that the few ‘complete’ scenes we saw will continue to be edited before release.

With those caveats out of the way, here’s what The Hobbit looked like to me: a hi-def version of the 1970s I, Claudius. It is drenched in a TV-like – specifically 70s era BBC – video look. People on Twitter have asked if it has that soap opera look you get from badly calibrated TVs at Best Buy, and the answer is an emphatic YES.

The 48fps footage I saw looked terrible. It looked completely non-cinematic. The sets looked like sets. I’ve been on sets of movies on the scale of The Hobbit, and sets don’t even look like sets when you’re on them live… but these looked like sets.
The other comparison I kept coming to, as I was watching the footage, was that it all looked like behind the scenes video. The magical illusion of cinema is stripped away completely.”
