I don't particularly mind 3 movies instead of 2, just as long as they don't become tl;dr, or it's 3 2-hour movies instead of 2 3-hour movies or something like that. I can't help but think it's someone higher up thinking three movies will bring in more moneys. Also a bit late to make that kinda decision, imho.

I'm REALLY hoping that we might get some bits and pieces of The Hunt for Gollum now, but who knows. I really see this mostly as making 3 two-hour movies, rather than 2 three-hour movies. Either way, I am excited.

Edit: lol, great admins think alike. :monster:

Do you think they'll ever do the Silmarillion? Or do you think its unfilmable?

I'd say they would be able to do shorts out of some of the stories in there, but even then, they would be a bit, excessively-high new-agey, abstract fantasy kinda movies that would be hard to translate to the type of movies people like. iirc, most stories in there were more historical tellings, instead of character-based stories like almost all movies are. So if anything, it would pick out the character-based stories in there, convert the existing stories into character-based ones, or do a completely unnatural style and make it a storytelling or history documentary kinda movie.

I think the Tolkien Estate is very much against selling the film rights, and I think they're not exactly fans of Jackson's movies either.
The movie rights for The Hobbit and LotR were sold by JRR Tolkien himself iirc.

I don't know, the first thing that popped into my head when I read that were images of some ethereal animated (somewhat anime) sequence of the first few pages...but can you imagine how beautiful that would be?

I'm not happy with the trilogy. I think the story is too short to be expanded that long. I think the division of Bilbo finding the ring as the climax for the first movie is already perfect I can't see how the rest will be split up again.

Also, as a fan of both the movies and the books, yes I love them both, I feel that it's kinda unfair to proportionally make more adaptation of the Hobbit when I think it's the least impressive compared to the LoTR trilogy.

^But they're using appendices to expand the 2nd and 3rd films... appendices, I tell you! :awesome:... so you'll get stuff that isn't in the hobbit, which explains stuff that happens in and around the events of the hobbit, and leading up to the LOTR events. I think it's a good idea.

YES!!!

I'm really happy about this decision, also I love reading the appendices at the end of LOTR, if it means they're going to expand on this and more of The Hobbit then I'm all for three films.

@Octo: If PJ ever decides to do The Silmarillion too, I think I'd be a very happy lady.

Hmmm, if they're going to include the LoTR appendices, I think I'm in. I desperately want to see more Faramir and Eowyn but I think that expectation is unrealistic.

Yey!

One of the things that annoyed me about The Hobbit was how Gandalf just left to go do something important and didn't explain what he was doing at all. And when he got back he just says that he and the White Council drove the Necromancer out of Mirkwood. It was only after the Council of Elrond that I knew who the White Council was and only after I finished the appendices that I knew what really happened. It's nice to see the gaps filled in.

As for the Silmarillion... it's practicly a history book and reads almost like a documentary. It would be hard to make a LOTR style movie about it. The other thing is that it's a tragedy at heart that makes way for the triumph of good in The Hobbit and LOTR. It has a "how is good ever going to win" ending that makes it hard to understand. (And the way the elves are portrayed in there... eek!)

Not in movies, that's for sure.

Buuuuuuut, a TV series would be possible if anyone would want to tackle it. Ice and Fire is faring quite well, after all.

- You never know your luck, I think I heard they were gonna flesh out Legolas's back story, but that may be speculation.

There's been some Elijah today.

I heard the omitted the EowynxFaramir wedding in the first trilogy T_T

What I want to see that can be possibly seen: Legolas and Gimli visiting the Helm's Deep caves and the Fangorn forest. I want more of that duo :3

The wedding between the too was nice but it was rushed, sort of out of place so its no wonder they decided to take it out. I as a fan though don't mind which is why I bought the extended editions.

Also Legolas and Gimli, best duo evar.

Well at the end they could have at least given us a 30 second long montage on the others' lives aside from the four main hobbits.

But I understand... but its still a shipper's loss.

Baw, y u make the 3rd movie a summer one? I liked the holidays tradition of going to watch LOTR for the first movies, :(.

“We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”

I also am a little sad about the breaking of tradition, but I'm glad about only waiting 2.5 years instead of 3 (especially since most people were only expecting to wait 2).

I still remember going to see all the LoTR movies in December, started associating them with christmas. I went to see Return of the King with my ex and it was one of those nights I can remember everything about. Well, at least we still get it twice more anyway :monster:
