I did Extended Fellowship & Two Towers directly into the theater's Return of the King when it released with my dad & my little brother. I've also marathoned all 3 Extended editions at one point a while back. It's quite intense, but very much worth it if you can manage it, though being fueled by the power of fanboy/fangirl is pretty much an absolute requirement.

I did the exact same thing. My hometown actually screened the extended editions of Fellowship and Towers before the Return of the King release. And when I got the extended box set I had a party.

I'm actually planning to do that again soon.

I have almost finished watching the appendices/documentaries for each extended edition. After that I have two commentary tracks left to listen to, so I'll have to watch all three movies two more times.

I really enjoyed the scrapped "Aragorn vs Sauron" concept and footage. Ultimately I'm glad it did not make it into the third movie, but nevertheless I love learning about scrapped ideas and unseen content.

Will be interesting to see Legolas in The Hobbit. I deduce his inclusion will go like this, "Hello I am Legolas ok bye". :monster:

I hope they do the classy thing and don't give him any lines.

He wasn't mentioned by name, but could have easily been there (and probably was).

It's been a very long time since I read The Hobbit, but didn't Bilbo either go to the elf kingdom Legolas is from or at least have a run in with a bunch of elves from Legolas' kingdom or something like that? Or he was at least in that general area of Middle Earth that Legolas is from?

He very could have easily been there, but he and Bilbo just never were formally introduced, or some such. lol

The Dwarves were captured by the Elves of the Mirkwood, and questioned by their king Thranduil, Legolas' daddy.

Legolas hadn't been created by the time Tolkien wrote The Hobbit, but the place he came from was. It logical to think that our elven prince was around the palace when Bilbo snuck in, and that he wasn't mentioned because poor Bilbo was too busy avoiding being stomped while being invisible to go asking for names and titles.

Huh! And Frodo is gonna be in it too! Interesting.

If I am not mistaken, some of the second film is going to cover material in between the book The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. There were stories in Unfinished Tales and, I believe, elsewhere that dealt with what happened in between the two books. This could be where Legolas will appear as well, although I haven't checked to see if it has been mentioned that he will appear elsewhere as well.

This is what happens in Fellowship. :P

I was right. :headbang:

"What was that" Bilbo exclaimed!

The faint sound of a dull thump woke the hobbit with a start, his dwarven entourage surrounded him quickly and quietly.

"Shhhhh!" Gandolf whispered quietly "It must be a demon!"

The dwarves closed in on the nature of the sound, finding a door hidden in the rock face. With a small grubby hand Bilbo eased the wooden door open and the noise became louder.

"It sounds as if someone is dying!" Bilbo exclaimed as the distinct male moan filled the small cavern in which the Hobbit had been hiding.

The dwarves rushed in brandishing their axes, Gandolf followed suit quickly his staff tip emitting a bright glow.

"DO YOU MIND!" Exclaimed Gimli as Legolas quickly tried to pull out of the hairy dwarf's bottom. "HOW DARE YOU INTERRUPT OUR ROMANTIC WEEKEND AWAY!" the dwarf was furious as as he stared into the eyes of those around him Gandolf sighed before his staff tip dimmed and the hobbit fainted.

The end.

Nobody can make a monotone quite as compelling as Benedict Cumberbatch.

This reminds me, can't wait for the new episodes of Sherlock ;.;

Wikipedia says he'll voice Sauron too, :monster:. Does Sauron have a role in the hobbit though? Can't remember :/.

In fact, does Sauron even speak liek evar besides 'ARAGORN!' and 'Ash Nazg durbatulûk ash Nazg gimbatul ash Nazg trakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul uzg-Mordor-ishi amal fauthut burgûli'?

Update from Bacefook:

Yikes! I can finally get back to some postings! We've finished our first block of shooting and moved straight into location scouting. More on that soon... But today, I'm thrilled to announce two new cast members who will be joining us for our second block of shooting.

Evangeline Lilly will be playing a new character—the Woodland Elf, Tauriel. Her name means 'daughter of Mirkwood' and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.) What is not a secret is how talented and compelling an actress Evangeline is; we are thrilled and excited she will be the one to bring our first true Sylvan Elf to life.

I'm also highly excited that Barry Humphries will be portraying the Goblin King, in much the way Andy Serkis created Gollum. Barry is perhaps best known for his business and social connections as the long-time manager of Dame Edna Everage. He has also been an ardent supporter of the rather misunderstood and unfairly maligned Australian politician, Sir Les Patterson. However, in his spare time, Barry is also a fine actor, and we're looking forward to seeing him invest the Goblin King with the delicate sensitivity and emotional depth this character deserves.

Evangeline and Barry, along with Welsh actor Luke Evans as Bard and Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, just about rounds out the major casting. I cannot wait to get stuck into these new scenes!

More soon, including a flurry of answers to your questions. Sorry for the delay!

Cheers,

Peter J

Evangeline Lilly is hawt. I will watch these movies just for her even if when the time comes I think they look really stupid (not that they will anyway but STILL).

Those pics are lovely. I'm getting really pumped. :)

It kind of warms my heart to know that Ian McKellen is so into this. :)
