I really hope that, in the next Compilation title, Sephiroth will only appear in flashbacks (for instance, when passing by the Forgotten Capital, a flashback of Sephiroth killing Aerith...) and being referred in dialogue in the main plot and with several NPCs around the world, in a way to show how Sephiroth marked the lives of everyone, both for good and bad reasons and that his shadow still lingers in the planet, even though he's dead.

This. I feel that resurrecting Sephiroth over and over is just diminishing his character and milking the cashcow. I mean, I would be annoyed if he were entirely erased from the FF7 universe. He obviously had a huge impact. But constantly having him fight Cloud and losing (for the obvious good vs evil thing) would be ruining and get boring after a while.

The only other way I could stand a "return" is any more pre-Nibelhiem stuff. That leaves much to be worked with without running the risk of it The Enternal Battle of Cloud vs Sephiroth x123654987

Another question, do you think SE will ever truly kill of Sephiroth?
Well of course not, they will find many ways to use him in other games and such (which is good and bad, since I want to see more but don't want him being the cashcow....)
But...God damnit is too much to ask SE to have seph finish cloud off for good in the most epic fight evar?? >:(

Oh. I guess I've bought some unofficial stuff then. Well, that's okay. It's not like that's gonna kill SE, especially if they're not even in that particular market.

As for Sephiroth, yes I want to see him in more games to feed my fangirlish need, but as writer of characters, it's sad seeing a good character pieced down just to get a few more dollars. Ah, corporate greed!

Also, why do you think they picked the name "Sephiroth"?

I'd like to see Sephiroth in the Compilation again. In my opinion, Dirge of Cerberus felt a little hollow without him. Not that I'm asking for the "Cloud defeats him again, ooh big surprise" kind of way, however. I guess I would be happy with flashbacks...

I suppose they picked the name because it's unique, and it's related to the whole Kabbalah thing. (Which I don't fully understand, but it does sound pretty cool.)

Tifa's name comes from the same Tree of Life thing, right? Tifaret?

...I don't know anything about spiritualism. *Shuts up.* :monster:

I think that they chose the name "Sephiroth", because of its meaning.

The Sephiroth (or Sephirot) is a group of ten spheres (the sephirah) that compose the "Tree of Life" and each one represents an aspect of God.

Acording to Kabbalah beliefs, one must travel through the paths linking the sephirah until the last one is reached, wich is the top of the Tree of Life.

When someone reaches the top of the Tree of Life, he/she is granted with divine enlightenment and becomes one with God.

It is comparable with Sephiroth's situation in FFVII, where Sephiroth wanted to achieve godhood.

Sephiroth's actions throughout the game may be seen as if he was walking in the paths leading to the top of the Tree of Life to achieve godhood.

I pride myself on my ability to find rare FF7 stuff. I have a really good conection to Yahoo!Japan.

Why Sephiroth.........that's a good question. Sephiroth is hebew for the Tree of life. I guess it has to do with wanting to be a god. Just my thoughts.....

What kind of rare FFVII stuff do you have, sephirothpaine?

Or to stay more on topic, what Sephiroth merchandise does everyone have?

I have two wall scrolls, the two Play Arts figures (AC and FFVII), the potion figure, the trading arts figure, and a plushie. 8D *Nerd.*

Hmmm...

One Sephiroth plushie, two figurines, two wallscrolls, some posters and two artbooks. I figured I'd have more, but I move a lot so that kind of dosen't help. :(

Incidently, one of the artbooks wasn't of what I was promised. Highly amusing though. xD

I have all instore Crisis Core poster from Japan, there's about 8 I think(I really don't want to open any tubes right now) as well as the commerical posters that SE sell through their site. I have most of the Advent Children ones, all of the DoC. ( Looking for Cloud and Sephiroth poster for Dissidia, there is one on Y!Japan but I don't want the others nor do I want to pay 5,000 yen for it.)

I got the Dissidia Sephiroth/Cloud and Sephiroth/squall a few weeks ago. (I don't want to list everything, I may start a new thread to list my collection like I did at ACF.net since I will have to get everything out.)

Comparing sephiroth's name to the tree of life makes it sound even more fitting to his character. :monster:
But what I'd like too know is (and since this be the place to look when there is so much made up stuff on the net, that and I've probably read about it somewhere but forgot) the how/what/where and why origin of Masamune. Enlightenment please?

Masamune was the name of a lengendary japanese swordsmith. The swords he made are still regarded as the best and they're sort of a national treasure.

There's a interesting tale about Masamune.

Masamune had a student, Murasame (who, curiously, also gives name to FF swords) who defied Masamune to see wich one could make a better sword.

Masamune aceppted the challenge and the wach one of them made a sword.

To see wich one of the swords had the purest blase or something, they decide to put the swords in a lake to see what would happen.

Murasame was the first to put his sword in the lake. Since the blade in Murasame's sword was made through his envy towards Masamune, it became evil and demonic.

In result, the leaves that were in the water were all sheddred into pieces when passing by Murasame's sword.

Masamune's blade was made without any kind of bad feelings in its creation, so the blade was so pure-hearted that the remaining leaves, when passing by Masamune's sword, would simply move away, without any kind of damage.

Another legend about Masamune's sword tells us that those swords would not draw blood. The damage would be made and the person would die if the wound was fatal, but without any trace of blood in the victim's body or in the sword's blade.

Maybe the creators had this in mind when making Aerith's death, since there's no trace of blood anywhere.

^ Ah yes, thanks for those stories, I had heard of the legendary blacksmith before but not the stories. But sorry, I meant to say about's masamune in final fantasy! You know like who made it, what's it made from, how he came into possession of it and other questions like that. After all it's just as iconic as Sephiroth is (wonder what they would have give him if masamune wasn't his weapon...)

Oh, that' s a bit hard, since there's nothing on that subject.

Well, I have some theories:

1. Maybe Shinra tried to create a weapon with some extremely rare materials - the result being the Masamune.

Because of these rare materials, the sword had an incredible strength. So incredible, that no one could wield it properly...except for Sephiroth. So, it would make sense to give the sword to him.

2. Maybe the Masamune was some kind of ancient relic found in the site where they also found the tablets talking about Omega and Chaos. I can't remember if these were found in the place where Jenova was sealed, but if it was, maybe the Masamune was a weapon that the Cetra used to defeat Jenova. Ironic, isn't it?

Again, the sword would have such an incredible strength that no one at this time would be able to wield it, except for Sephiroth.

Note that these are all theories and speculation.

Yeah this part of your theory seems plausible, I've always thought that it could be made out of mythril (since it's supposed to be the strongest type of metal) and probably something else mixed in.

So incredible, that no one could wield it properly...except for Sephiroth. So, it would make sense to give the sword to him.

Well I'm not too sure about saying he would be the only one capable of welding a sword of such strengh, as the saying goes "a weapon is only as good as it's master", in other words if someone else that was nothing like Sephiroth but had mastered his or her sword abilites then I don't see why they couldn't handle a sword like Masamune (even the length shouldn't pose a problem to them. Heck even Tifa had a go if you believe what happened in Last Order to be true.)

Now that would be something wouldn't it. But if that was an option it would have been documented or something, so I guess it makes this theory go down the drain :monster:

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it was said “Masamune was a sword only Sephiroth could wield”. But Tifa does wield it, so yeah that kills that theory/possibility. As for the in-game origins, I don’t believe this was ever given, much to my disgruntlement (particularly in CC, which it could have easily been added to). D&D’s theory makes the most sense, though before all the compilation came around, I created my own. Or rather I wrote my own in my story, the Story of Sephiroth, of Sephiroth finding the sword in a cave, and had to defeat a monster to claim it. Masamune is described as the “Eskallinlina, blade of the Ancients” in my story.

Yeah, that’s just my own fanficland fun, but hey if there’s no official word, where’s the harm in that? :P

Another wonderful mistranslation from the original instruction manual. It's not that Sephiroth is the only one who can use it, it just speaks to the blade being so massive and heavy, that only Sephiroth's strength can fully wield and control it. There isn't like a hex that prevents anyone who can pick it up and swing it, from wielding i t.

That's why I said that...
That's exactly how I took the point. Not that the sword actually rejects another wielder (although that would be a hella lot more interesting...) but rather that Sephiroth's the only one with the strength to wield it as it was meant to be wield.

I always did wonder why we were given zero explaination about Masamune. Any one of you FF7 crackerjacks know of a translation out there that explains anything? I actually really would like to know why Sephiroth, a villian, was given a sword normally reserved for the good guys. I could assume this was to fool the gamer into thinking Sephiroth will be a truly playable character and is one of the good guys, but I doubt it's that.

Thoughts?

kunoichi

I only thought that another master swordsman could use masamune because apart from sephiroth who else has had the chance to actually fight with it? And I think I remember someone saying that sephiroth is supposed to hold masamune in his left hand because they believed that all left handed peps are evil lol. Come to think about it, I bet that Angeal, Genesis or even Zack could after a while use masamune properly I recon. Just a thought.

Dawnbreaker

~The Other Side of Fear~
That is a good point. Perhaps the only reason it ssys "only Sephiroth can wield" just means only he can wield it as of now. Perhaps were similiar skills and genetics possessed by another being they might be able to wield it to, and perhaps as efficiently. Although, it's rare to find someone of his similiar strength, so that's why it said "only him". In others in theory it can happen, it just hasn't ever occured yet.
