I agree with most of your post, but I will never understand why people do this. You should never judge a person based off of clothing, or any other superficial trait.

Also, clothes don't make a hoochie. There's no such thing as hoochie clothes lawl.

THIS SO MUCH. I never got the whole "Tifa looks like a ho/hoochie" vibe from the girl at all when I played FF7. A mini skirt and tank top just never seemed so bad to me. Plus, videogame girls have looked so much more scandalous than Tifa and even then, I still didn't label them a hoochie for what they were wearing or how big their chests were. :\

But otherwise, that was an awesome post. :D

Not just 'videogame girls,' have these people never played another FF? Rosa's and Rydia are wearing pantsless boob presenting bodysuits. Celes gets pants, but she's still skintight, same with Garnet. Selphie wears a pretty short dress throughout nearly all of FFVIII. Ashe is in a smaller Mini than Tifa. Vanille and Fang are definitely exposing as much or more skin as Tifa. Rikku's in a Bikini. Yeah. Then if you look at non main titles, there's Linaly and Rouge from the FFV sequel, the Selkies, etc.

Tifa's in the higher levels of modesty.

In OG she doesn't even get the dignity of pants, she gets a skintight leotard that has no sleeves or pants of any sort, and only a weird cape besides.

You really don't think how one dresses can or could be intended to convey a message?

There isn't a particular style of clothes that you'd expect a prostitute or a chick going to the club to score some penis to wear? 'Cause there's definitely a particular style I put my woman in for roleplays I fantasize about women I like in.

I meant her character art. The OG's worse, but it's also pixels and not quite as noticable unless you know what you're looking for. But it's a fair point.

Yes, but Nuns in antiquated dive suits don't come up often.

I also don't associate 'Club Scene' or 'Prostitute' with 'Hiking Boot' and 'Cotton Tshirt.'

I'll give you the hiking boots, but you don't associate either of those words with a tight, midriff-bearing top and a miniskirt?

Okie dokie then.

At the very least, Tifa's attire suggests a confidence that the woman herself just never expresses. Given all the ironies in FFVII's cast, how the notion of Tifa's clothes vs. her personality gets argued against I'll never understand.

My father used to arrest hookers in full body dress.

I do not foolishly judge people by clothing. As one of my friends would attest, there are women who dress in quite modest clothing, but are absolutely NOT modest in the bedroom.

It's ignorant superficial nonsense to judge a person off of clothing. People foolishly label me as a hippie, or trying to be white because of the way I look and talk.

Many women dress the way they do simple because they wish to look nice for themselves, not because they are whores or sluts, or whatever sexually repressed slur people like to use. Sometimes we just want to feel sexy. Married women do this all the time, not because they're advertising to every penis out there, but because they like feeling pretty.

I guess what I said about her "hoochy clothes" would be a matter of opinion. I guess because I was raised to wear clothing that covered my body, and I still do, I would call her clothes "hoochy".

But I never judged Tifa to be an actual hooch. I just wondered WHY she wore those clothes and how they fit into her character.

But thanks for the compliments on the rest of my post. :awesome:

Definition of HOOCHIE

: a sexually promiscuous young woman

You are wrong. That has nothing to do with how you dress, but what you do.

Call her clothes what they are, revealing.

You're determined to crush all my hopes for this world, aren't you? =P

But fair enough points.

In any event, would you agree about the confidence -- or lack thereof -- irony of Tifa's attire?

I think she's confident in her appearance and her ability to defend herself, yes.

It is also possible that she dressed that way to get more customers for the bar, or more specifically to get Cloud's attention.

I don't think it's either of those however.

Absolutely. Sometimes how a person wears is a spot on estimation of a person simply because, well, sometimes it's that simple. However, the rest of the time, clothes are simply how a person chooses to express themselves, and nothing more, nothing less.

It really depends. For example, I'm in the military (which you all knew), and they say one of the biggest indicators of professionalism is how you wear your uniform. It has yet to fail me to assume that if someone wears their uniform sloppy, they're a shitbag in terms of their professionalism. 100% true. However on the flipside, some of the biggest shitbags in the business wear their uniform with absolute perfection.

On the flipside of the eqauation, some friends I have from South America call us prudes and all that because of how conservatively we dress; some of the ladies down in Rio go to the beach in swimwear that constitutes as almost nothing, leading to tourists thinking that they're down to bang, until they talk to them and realize the chick at the beach with a thong is saving themselves for marriage because Brazil is home to people who are mostly pretty damn religious but they wear thongs to the beach simply because they like to feel pretty.

You can't judge by appearances alone, you have to consider the whole package.

You and Gerbils.

Okie dokie then.

Yes, but not AUTOMATICALLY. I know women who job in tight midriff wearing cotton tops. The mini's the 'worst' part of it. And with all the other items it doesn't give the effect.

At the very least, Tifa's attire suggests a confidence that the woman herself just never expresses. Given all the ironies in FFVII's cast, how the notion of Tifa's clothes vs. her personality gets argued against I'll never understand.

I think it's more an obliviousness, all told. Unlike with 'dressing to impress' at Nibeleheim, I don't think she considers her appearance much, as evidenced by the delayed reaction and embarrassment on the ShinRa stairs.

Isn't the reason why she wore her infamous cowgirl outfit to 'get Cloud's attention' or is that just me making shit up? :awesome:

Oh and, that's my fave outfit for her. :P

I do not foolishly judge people by clothing. As one of my friends would attest, there are women who dress in quite modest clothing, but are absolutely NOT modest in the bedroom.
Thanks x10. SO TRUE. Being a girl myself, I can attest to this. :P I'm not modest. Ain't gonna lie; when I go out, I go ALL out. Is it because I want penis? Uh, not really. I just like looking pretty, looking hot. What girl doesn't? D: The compliments are flattering and they're ego boosters. We all need that shit.

At the same time, I do like dressing professionally. Being a nurse sort of requires that stuff. People think you're sort of stupid when you dress up/doll up.

And no, for the record, I am no hoochie. But all my hoochie girlfriends dress very conservatively, let me tell you. :awesome:

So, clothing can tell you something about a person, but most of the time, it doesn't.

Considering Tifa's environment, the slums, the entire FF7 world, her clothing choice makes perfect sense so that's why I never questioned it or judged her for what she wore. :)

And I hope no one brings up her chest size as a reason. Because girls with big boobs does not equal hoochy/ho/sexually promiscuous.

Women wearing miniskirts or midriff shirts or even showing a bit of cleavage will make me go 'wtf' almost instantly, due to the fact that nobody around here actually wears things like that (despite what they may or may not do in private). Women here are pretty modest most of the time.

Yeah, location plays a part, too. Which is why Tifa's clothing fit in with the whole slum theme.

I still disagree that just because a girl wears something revealing, it automatically makes her some sort of hoochie. Avoid the club district then. :monster:

Girls here dress sexy all the time. But that's cause Canadian gals are hawt. :wacky:

Isn't it generally cold where you live though?

Also I don't think Tifa's outfit was meant to convey any sort of 'I put out' any more than any other video game lady. There are a lot of non-conservative outfits from earlier than Tifa's time, like Princess Athena in that oldass Athena game who ran around in a goddamn bikini because she felt like it. To say Tifa's especially points out that she has sex all the time is ignoring other games where the sexy outfits didn't terribly matter.

NOT AMUSED
I understand it was not your intention to offend or insult, but you have to remember that terms liek "hoochie" and "slut" are specific to women and are part of an oppressive rhetoric dating back to a fuckload of centuries of female sexual repression.

I'm not gonna act liek a saint, because I've prolly used them before jokingly (I have been indoctrinated after all), but to see it used so blatantly in this context always makes me cry tears of rage. /anal

It really depends. For example, I'm in the military (which you all knew), and they say one of the biggest indicators of professionalism is how you wear your uniform.
I would say a uniform is quite different because unlike normal clothing it has a specific image it projects regardless of who wears it. And it is fully intentional. A uniform is not a means of self-expression. It is a form of expressing the will/image of something larger, like an organization. So wearing it in any way other than the one it was intended is to undermine that. I can see how the perception that the soldier is unprofessional would stand (however much I think that's just bs).

But yeah. As was said above, sometimes clothign is a means of self-expression (for those who can afford to make sure everything they wear fully reflects their inner soul~) and sometimes it is not. It's just a T-shirt. I don't necessarily have a great love for Florida if I wear one that bears its name.

Excellent response, man, and you are absolutely right! Good stuff, man.

To be fair though, I can't say it's bs. If you can't even wear a uniform right (and basic training drills it into us how to wear the uniform and the importance of it), why would it be wrong to assume the person is unprofessional? Part of the definition of the job and its duties is wearing your uniform right. If your uniform is sloppy, you are literally neglecting doing part of your job.

This is probably going to be a weird opinion, but I've never seen bikinis as fitting into that category that could suggest "I put out." I've never even really seen them as comparable to a bra and panties.

I mean, they're considered outside wear, and they're a specific kind of outfit for a specific venue or climate. You can even wear them in restaurants.

But I've spent quite a bit of time at the beach over the years, and it also gets hot as balls in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, so its not uncommon to see women going around in the summertime in bikinis in a city like Charlotte with maybe a thin sarong on.

To be fair though, I can't say it's bs. The most important question on the table now is, where does Reno fit into all this?

well that will mark me as a creep but here goes

I'll always think of tifa sort like the childhood friend/girlfriend (dual class =P) I never had, so I'd preffer her titties not bouncy and huge and her not being "sexy" but rather childish and enthousiastic etc etc.

Thus. Original in-game design for me.-

I've actually liked her current designs, not so much the one from FFVII. I loved her clothes on Final Fantasy Advent Children, but my favorite has been Dissidia. Someone already showed the Render, and she looked...just pretty. IMO Almost all the characters in Dissidia looked way better than the originals (Except Lightning...who technically was the same).

I don't care because Yuffie pwns Aerith and Tifa both. :awesomonster: Seriously, Tifa shouldn't be judged for the clothes or what boobs size she has, she shouldn't be judged for her personality either. No character should be judged or looked down upon. Though her bouncy boobs in Dissidia was a bit ridiculous sometimes, because they would bounce when she wasn't moving xD Plus Tifa isn't a whore, she just loves Cloud. There's nothing wrong with loving somebody. (:
Otherwise I could say that Tidus is a giant whore for loving Yuna, not to mention he goes around Dissidia topless the skank. xD

And btw, Tifa's FFVII design is the best. But she looks hot in everything, so I don't care.
