I figured i'd try making something for the forum status icons, just to see what it would look like. Not sure what i could do for the 'no new posts' icon. Maybe just a dulled down version

Looks good to me. For no new posts I'd make it greyscale, darker, and get rid of the glow around the icon.

That's quite win, :monster:. It looks a tad on the high side though, but that might just be me. And it needs more details, especially in the background. But other than that, it's looking goodso far. It would be neat if you'd take advantage of PNG transparency to blend it with the 'regular' background as well, unless you intend the color scheme of the site to change a tad too.

I kind of started working with some idea myself, but I'm not quite sure where to go next.

Feel free to use anything if you want to Pixel. lol

Also the font I used was Birch Std. Looks a lot like the FF font just with wider letters. :)

Anyway I'm really loving the little materia things you made. They'd be great! ^_^

Greyscale looked a bit odd, so i just went with really dulled down

materia4.gif

hmm yeah, now that you mention it, TLS's colour scale is slightly saturated. Looks excellent, well done.

@ tennyo, banner looks nice but "site forums" is probably redundant, I'd just change it to "forums".

The Site Forums thing is supposed to be a menu thing, i think. So the banner would be plit into separate images with links

I figured that one could like to the main site and one could link tot he forums. Since right now there isn't even a link in the forums that leads to the main site anyway. It's kind of annoying, too. But whatever.

oic, that makes sense then, but maybe they should be slightly further apart from each other or something. :monster:

Well yeah of course. And who knows maybe there are more links that need to go in. Who knows?

It's just an idea. I'm feeling a case of sh00pers block. XD (I made that up just now)

Well, I have a suggestion...
What you think if we reworked the site's layout and design, made things more attractive and organized. Personally I think we could do such a thing, we have enough potential for that. And being honest with you, I don't think that with the actual wordpress style we're gonna do something big.
Don't get me wrong, I'm saying that because I, and pretty sure that you all, want to see a better TLS, and make the site grow up and get it's deserved prestige.

And you? What you think about that?

I definitely think we can make a great site. We have a lot of interesting stuff, and it would be great to have things archived nicely. The wordpress style is nice, but we could expand on it a bit.

I really like the way http://www.finalfantasyxiii.net/ is done. The way they have that header image over each article, and some of the stylistic choices.

Id definityly like to keep the darkness, because the little touches we add really jump out. Especially with the glow of the lifestream.

Personally I don't like the way of FFXIII.net uses it's menu, I prefer something more condensed, more clean.
The front page is too extensive for my taste, and some other stuffs.

It's almost the same problems of AC.net.... buuuuuuuuuut AC.net got some serious problems (like 3 fonts on a single site, the old fashioned 800x600 style and some other things).

Some stuff that I really enjoy:
http://member.square-enix.com/na/
http://finalfantasy-xiii.net/ (pretty good if you remove all the unnecessary stuff)
http://www.creativeuncut.com/index.html

And I truly believe that we can do something amazing!

I'm don't know how to code... but I work with site layouts....
Since I was invited to the staff, I'm studying a good layout design for TLS, studying it's visual identity and other stuff.

I offered to throw together a mock up of a layout in another thread. I said I couldn't code but I think Yop said he could probably code whatever we do. :)

anyway either Tennyo or Pixel's banners would work nice, I think. I definitely like the use of the Final Fantasy font in Pixel's.

I really like these two as the Read / Unread Forum Icons.

As for the Header-

lsbanner1.jpg

The FF Logo does a good job of sticking out in the current one, which is helped by it being a little bit darker at each of the ends of the logo, as well as the banner. A thin black outline might help as well. As for the Background itself, a texture like this one might be interesting to try, something like a bunch of dots with a radial blur for that underwatery effect.
rp_lifestream.jpg

The twisting border around the top on the current one would be interesting if it has the little square things like in this (Click it for a better / larger / different image with them)

At any rate, these're just a couple suggestions that might make for some interesting variations..

Also - if anyone needs the FF Logo Original.

An idea i had for texture was this underwater effect, and maybe have aerith's lifeless corpse floating down in silhouette.

The arc design in retrospect was quite difficult to work with and doesnt look too great, so i dont think ill bother developing it :P

All of those look awesome to me, but I can see why you wouldn't want to develop the swirls if they're difficult. That said it's a bit difficult to see what's in the "The Lifestream" text in the last example, but I doubt it really matters that much.

I think I'm jumping in this thread kind of late, but in response to various issues already raised:

- I made the current banner, with the exception of the parts that Pixel already mentioned— he designed the curvy teal outside border thing and the swirly lifestream bits came from some clip art template somewhere. The color scheme was also mine, although the particular layout I designed kind of got butchered to hell between the various software changes and difficulties with actually making my visual ideas functional in the first place. :monster:

Unfortunately, I no longer have the original PSD files because my computer got a virus in January that required my hard drive to be wiped clean, and they were among the casualties that didn't get saved. =(

- I believe the swirly lifestream template thing was rendered with vectors, not a 3D program. I didn't make it, but I do remember what it looked like before I changed the color and whatnot.

- I don't remember the name of the font I used, though I downloaded it online somewhere and it should still be in that thread on that other forum where we all discussed/brainstormed creating this site in the first place. For that matter, the PSD files might be there, too. I no longer have the link to that forum due to aforementioned hard drive holocaust, but I think the majority of you came from that forum so you probably all do (and maybe could link me again while you're at it so I can recover the files I left behind? :D )

- I also vectorized the Final Fantasy logo, and it should also be in that thread, though it looks like Tennyo is already using a vectorized logo.

- I think requiring a certain amount of traffic for site affiliation is a good idea, because if content relavence and being maintained by a forum poster/site staffer are the only requirements, that means my dumb Vincent fansite with ~3800 visits in two and a half years could be an affiliate. Having a different section for links to content-relavent member websites would be neat, though. (Particularly if the better real estate was given to site contributors over forum members and/or older/more active members over newer/less active ones.)

Lessee now.

1. I suck at graphics and overall design, but I know enough (X)HTML and CSS to be able to convert a mockup or incorporate imagery into a site. I fail at color combinations and Photosoup though, so don't expect too much in that area, :monster:.

2. I could make one of those 'feature' slider thingies as on finalfantasy-xiii.net without too much problems, some Javascript and an effects library would do the trick. It would require some free time though, and I doubt I'd be able / could be arsed to write a plugin for Wordpress or anything to keep it updated - so that would have to be done by hand (i.e. template edits). Also, we'd have to have someone able to make imagery or have an image at hand that could be cropped to size - I and anyone with some shoop skillz could probably do that without too much problems.

I'd personally like to see the forums and frontpage look like the exact same site, specifically with the same menu (which, keeping the forums in mind, would either mean the majority of the menu being horizontally oriented, or have a sidebar of sorts appear on the forums' front page. There should be enough width to allow for that, but it would take some mocking up and trying out).

The water effect in the logo looks nice, imho. Dunno about putting a character in it - I kinda like the abstractness of the current forum look and feel, isn't tied to any one character. But if you could make it faint, abstract, or a detail where you'd have to look twice in order to be able to recognize it as Aeris, that would be neat.

Also note that I'm in no way in charge of layout, just offering my own opinions, :monster:.

I probably should do a prototype of the feature switch-o-matic wicba, for great justice.
