UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End

I'm on the last chapter. I just need to pause for a minute and take in what I'm about to do: finish the very last Uncharted game. It's going to be emotional as fuck. I am prepared to shed tears.

@Carlie - Damn, girl! :desu:

My girlfriend wants to hang out tonight. I told her no, because I will either be playing Uncharted myself, or watching Force finally start his game. Don't know if I'm bad at relationships, or really, really good :monster:

I am absolutely dying to see Force's reaction to
Crash Bandicoot
. I can't wait to see the look on his face! :P

My friend asked me to go to the park at 6pm and I said no. She knows I'm playing this game and she got really mad when I said no XD. Fuck her, I'll be spamming multi with Carlie tonight, that's all the friendship I need :monster:

Just a warning folks, don't open the artbook if you don't want massive spoilers.

Well, that was pretty much perfect.

I'm a bit shellshocked from finishing.

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Pacing much improved from UC3, as expected. Loved the way the story was set out in a more serious tone.

Can't get over how much I loved the ending. The story of Uncharted has never been particularly deep, specifically the endings while they're always alright, they're just too short. This one was absolutely perfect. Argh what can you even say man ;-;

Gameplay: excellent, definitely my favourite of all four, but that's to be expected when it's the 4th they've made. It pretty much feels like the leap from Uncharted 1 to Uncharted 2.

The gunfights are better from a technical standpoint, but they're 100% definitely more challenging than any in the original trilogy. I've played them all on crushing at least twice (because plat trophies and Nathan Drake Collection) and I died a SHITLOAD playing on normal. They're well designed/ enemy AI is very smart, but the hard fights don't feel cheap and irritating like say Uncharted 3. If you die in U4 it's because YOU made a mistake, not because the dude with the RPG/Grenade Launcher is programmed to not let you move in a certain way (fucking Uncharted 3 I swear to fuck).

The length of the game was also pretty perfect. It's the longest one by quite a leap (reflected in the speedrun trophy, which is a whopping 6 hours for UC4 when it was 3 for 1, 2 and 3.) My total game time was somewhere around the 18 hour mark? And I dilly-dalleyd/ didn't rush/ explore.

Set pieces are toned down but in a good way. Everything feels more grounded and believable, but it's still all huge and spectacular.

Music: I've read people saying the soundtrack was bland/ not noteworthy, but honestly in terms of ambient/ battle music I think it's the best yet. Other than Nate's Theme I've always found Uncharted's music to be pretty bland, and this feels like an improvement.

Overall it deserves its 10/10 for sure.

You can unlock render modes and play the entire game cel-shaded (among other crazy things like "rainbow fun-land" and "matrix-style ASCII"), it's fucking amazing looking :closedmonster:

Obvs Crash Bandicoot in the game is amazeballs. YUSS

Unfortunately, I was spoiled a bit on the ending (I knew about Cassie). It didn't entirely ruin the experience, and I'm not mad about it purely because if I hadn't been slightly spoiled on the internet I would have been spoiled the minute I opened the artbook. She's in there.

I really liked the final fight. I can see people complaining about it because it kind of throws a new mechanic at you, but I remember wanting a swordfight in an earlier chapter and it was just really cool. You can feel yourself getting better at it the more you try aswell.

I liked the direction the story took and how it all played out. As an ending to the franchise it's almost perfect. The writing and Troy Baker managed to sell me Sam as a character, but I do have some issues (explained in next part) with him (not him, but his part in Nathan's life).

Nadine I thought was a great, well thought out and excellent villain. Rafe I found myself not caring about at all until the very end, and even then it was only kinda weak. But he's not a bad character.

I'm really really glad Elena had quite a huge role in this game, all things considered. What they were doing towards the end with the two of them on the island was a perfect throwback to Uncharted 1 (obviously all intentional).

And I mean, how can you fault that ending. They're a trio explorer family, Elena films it all, they make huge discoveries etc. That's AMAZING. I cried and I'm not at all surprised. Them explaining their past lives to Cassie was the best thing ever.

Chloe isn't in the game. At all (there's a letter from her at the beginning of the game in Nate's attic, that's it). This is a big fucking deal because it's the last Uncharted game. This will only be a perfect experience if there's Chloe-centric DLC. They're doing single-player DLC so we can hope. I want them to explain this decision. There are places where she could have popped in for a couple of chapters. If not that, then there was a perfect moment where Elena finds Nate and he asks how she got there or whatever, she could have popped up then. Which brings me to my next point:

Sam is there too much. I know this might sound weird, but he's literally there for almost every single chapter. I get it, we need to know more about him. I'm not saying he's not a likable character or that I didn't like him, because he is and I do, but there are too many chapters where it's just Nate and Sam doing random shit.

And finally, my suspension of disbelief is really strained/ maybe cracked a bit with how Sam's been retconned into Nate's backstory. I could have bought it if there wasn't a big part of Uncharted 3 being about how Nate met Sully and shit. Or if the prison break chapter (which I thought was amazing, I loved playing it) hadn't been included. I was buying it up until the part with Nate and Sam as adults doing a job together. I can buy that Sam was in prison when Nate met Sully in UC3, I can't buy them working together for all their lives and the guy's never mentioned or even referenced in the first three games. I would have bought it if Sam's apparent death had happened when Nate was younger, before he met Sully. Now I'm kinda "eh" about it all.

I mean, those things would be far bigger issues for me if the rest of the game wasn't so perfect. As it stands, they bug, but not enough to lessen my enjoyment of the game.

siggghhhhhh <3 <3 <3

Been playing multiplayer with a friend tonight and we had so much fun! We got through all the game modes. I'd say Plunder is my least favourite so far. Don't get me wrong because it's fun, but it's quite long. Team Deathmatch obviously remains as the top dog. :awesome:

Oh you know they will :monster: probably several different versions, lol.

Also, I enjoyed watching Force's reaction to
Crash Bandicoot
as much as I thought I would :P

I mean, I hope you at least put the game disc in and let it install and download the 5GB day one patch before you went to work this morning :monster:

I'm on Chapter 7 or so. It locked up on me in a big fight area and I took that as a sign to go to bed. But so far so good. The graphics are just unbelievable. And the dialogue is as great as ever.

I believe I'm on Chapter 10? I stopped right when
you get to Madagascar
. So far I'm loving it. I commented to Force last night that the game is so beautiful, but I'm barely taking any time to stop and take in the scenery becasue the game has thus far just been too exciting for me to slow down and smell the roses, so to speak.

I am so bad at sneaking in video games. I got caught several times by the nun in the orphanage before I finally made it out  but nice way to teach the basic mechanics of sneaking/jumping/climbing, of course. Something Force and I were wondering is how Nate's childhood timeline goes, how it ties into the backstory we saw in 3.

Mmmmm early 20s Nate hnnnnnngggh

I liked that we got to play through Sam's escape. I have to admit, when it first became apparent that I'd have to, my fist thought was "I have to do this again??", lol, but I quickly stopped complaining.

Holy crap, cover does not last long in this game! I was a little horrified to discover that in that same prison escape sequence, largely because I kept dying :monster:

I was a little disappointed that I couldn't roll dodge Nadine's punches in the manor, but I immediately attributed it to Nate being out of practice, so s'all good in my mind.

I wasn't looking terribly hard, but I was a little surprised that I didn't find any treasures til we got to Scotland. Am I blind, or is that where they first start showing up?

I love love love love LOVE reading through Nate's journal entries. "Jerk Thief" hahahahahaha.

And, as always, the dialogue in this game is freaking fantastic. I really like that Nate and Sam take such normal brotherly jabs at each other throughout, despite not seeing each other for 15 years. It's really sweet. Oh, but I'm sorry, I will never forgive Nate for lying to Elena. Ever. Never ever!!!

I think that's it for now. I'm taking a very brisk 5 mile walk right now, but I'll continue playing once I get home. I just figured I should earn all of the time I will be spending on my couch today :monster:

Good thing I got the FFX theme. I can listen to "To Zanarkand" over and over as it updates. :monster:

There's an FFX theme!? :closedmonster:

brb getting it now

I've had the VII remake theme on there since December. Aerith's theme is starting to grate.

Checking for themes was the first thing I did. :monster: I'll probably get the FFVII theme since I'm sure To Zanarkand will eventually start to grate as well.

There's also an Uncharted 4 theme playing a very sad sounding version of Nate's theme.
