You can also hear the planet way up on the Highwind. ;) It's hard to say if they gained the ability to hear the Planet- 1. Who's to say it was or wasn't 'crying' before FF7 2. It's unknown if other civilians (non-player characters) can hear the Planet. But Bugenhagen certainly taught them...

But wouldn't there be extremely high levels of Mako in/around Mako reactors, as well? I'm reading the game script, and from that it seems like it's just as simple as Bugenhagen taught them about it, and told them what it is, that's why they can hear it.

If exposure to Mako is a reason, then a lot more people would hear it. I guess there's nothing that says nobody else hears it, either...

It's like Bahamut NEO's attack, where it raises a piece of land up and it incinerates the land, but after the attack, there isn't a big hole in the battle ground. I always liked summoning NEO in weird places where that logically wouldn't work- such as the train bridge in the Corel Mountains...
