The Radio Times wrote:

The Time War happened off-screen, between the 1996 movie starring Paul McGann and the relaunch of the TV series with Christopher Eccleston. The battle wiped out both the Timelord planet of Gallifrey and the entire Dalek army, and the Doctor was forced to commit some terrible atrocity to end the bloodshed. The fact that John Hurt [3] is striding away from the carnage like Bruce Willis in Die Hard heavily implies he is the previously unknown, war criminal version of the Doctor from this period.

It looks like other long-running storylines will finally be resolved. The front of the Tardis [4] seems to be bouncing away from the explosion like the van doors in The Italian Job. This suggests we’ll find out why the Tardis self-destructed (taking the universe with it) on Rory and Amy Pond’s wedding day at the end of series five. Writer Steven Moffat never bothered to explain this at the time, leaving fans to wonder if the Doctor filled the Tardis with diesel instead of unleaded.

Also, the words “Bad Wolf” [5] have more significance than your average piece of graffiti scrawled on a toilet wall. At the end of the first series of new-Who, Rose Tyler became some sort of temporal goddess, and spread the words across time as a warning to herself. (Honestly, this made sense at the time.) Billie Piper is returning with David Tennant for the 50th, but could the seeds of this story really have been planted so long ago?

And finally, here’s an ultra-geeky detail you might have missed. See the sonic screwdriver in John Hurt’s hand? See how it’s glowing red [6]? We’ve only seen one red sonic screwdriver before. It belonged to River Song, the Doctor’s wife.

The first time the Doctor met River was in a planet-sized library. She died almost immediately, but was saved by the ‘red settings’ on a special screwdriver the Doctor had given her just beforehand. Could be nothing more than a photo filter, could be the most important coincidence in the history of the universe. We’ll find out on Saturday 23 November.
There are links in the Radio Times piece, along with additional information.

^With that, though, I can't help but be nitpicky and say, "IT WASN'T THE RED SETTING THAT SAVED HER!" But I'm so pedantic...

Anyway, there have been a lot of rumors of Peter Davison being in the 50th.

But I get the distinct impression that this isn't the case, and that he's just trolling the press. He probably has something else going on up his sleeve.

Is anyone else depressed at the lack of 9? I really would have enjoyed seeing the return of one of the darker Doctors. 9's rage was honestly one of the more appealing traits to the recent 3 Doctors and I would have enjoyed seeing the showdown twixt 9 and 8.5.

Blame Eccleston. He was offered a role but turned it down.

Yeah, but that's pretty much not for lack of trying on their part. It's all Eccleston, so I'll take whatever I can get.

On a different note, I'd be interested in seeing what some of you think of this:

I have a feeling that if I read this it will piss me off too much. I really do hate peoples' obsession with this topic in regard to Doctor Who.

Which is how she remains for the next two seasons - a woman with her own life that travels with the Doctor sometimes. As does River. As does Clara. This is unheard of in Doctor Who - the idea that the companion might have a life outside the Doctor. For all that Moffat gets stick for defining female characters in terms of the Doctor, we shouldn’t forget that he’s the one who finally came up with a credible response to the problems posed by Sarah Jane’s anguished “you were my life” in School Reunion. The Doctor isn't the life of any of his companions under Moffat.

I find this paragraph rather...ironic, I suppose. This is why. tl;dr: we're told that Amy and River have this life outside the Doctor, but never actually shown it. Clara seems like she might be better in this regard, though as she's spent most of her first season primarily as a plot device (this is not a complaint, fyi) it's hard to say. Hopefully now that her whole thing is resolved we'll actually get to explore her character background some more.

And what’s the usual response to this? People who wanted more scenes of [Amy] in agony and suffering.

No, we just wanted to see what is an undeniably major (and terrible) event in Amy's life to actually be mentioned from time to time. :monster:

I don’t think there’s been a single leap forward in feminism in the series larger than what happens between The End of Time Part II (Oh look, the Doctor’s finally managed to marry off his last two companions) and Series Five.

What? While Martha and Mickey certainly qualify as Pair the Spares (THOUGH THE MORE I THINK ABOUT THOSE TWO AND THEIR PARALLELS THE MORE I LOVE THAT PAIRING NGL), how is that misogynistic? Same with Donna getting married, which was essentially a bookend to her entire arc?

I don't believe that Moffat's era is some terrible assault on feminism. I do think Moffat himself is amazingly sexist and likely doesn't even realize it. ("There’s this issue you’re not allowed to discuss: that women are needy. Men can go for longer, more happily, without women. That’s the truth. We don’t, as little boys, play at being married - we try to avoid it for as long as possible. Meanwhile women are out there hunting for husbands." whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttt????? are you actually for real sir). Mostly I just think that he's not that great a writer, tbh, and an even poorer showrunner. It shows in his female characters, who at first glance look like strong women who don't need no man, but then when you look properly you realize they're rather two-dimensional and constructed entirely of tropes.

To be clear, I really like both Amy and River, because they're good and they have this potential to be amazing. It's just that potential, imo, is never reached in the show, and I think it's because Moffat simply doesn't understand (how to write) women in a way that doesn't directly involve their relationship with a man (either the Doctor or Rory).

ALL THAT SAID, I have high hopes for Clara, who so far I love.

Oh, and I do agree with that article in one regard - Rory is fucking great and a stellar male character.

dat tumblr post

That was beautiful.

Although I must confess, I did think of one thing about Amy outside The Doctor/Rory. She eventually later on became a writer, so there's that...

I should probably go read the article X posted...

Benedict Cumberbatch on Doctor Who really would melt the internet. The heat from the tumblr servers crashing would be too much...

Tenth Doctor may be sold out but I don't think the Fourth Doctor has gone on presale yet.

That was hilarious. I love how with their first question that had all this build up like it was a huge deal all to just ask if that one dude in "Eleventh Hour" was watching porn on his laptop. :P

And I like how Moffat seemed almost genuinely interested in a massive Classic Doctor box set. Please make this happen instead of making us pay $20-$30 per serial. My wallet can't afford that. :(

But aaaaaahhhhh I'm kind of excited for this master plan that RTD had for all the different Peter Capaldis that Moffat mentioned. It's interesting that they aren't just going to ignore Capaldi's previous appearances on the show and in Torchwood. I'm very glad that they aren't. I think that could be very cool. :)

And... did they get Christopher Eccleston to record new lines for that video? :O
I think it's a sound-a-like.

Mixed feelings about if it does get picked up. Part of me feels it should be left nebulous, that part of their appeal is how little we know of their personal pasts (such as how Susan joined the Doctor - one new adventures novel had them not being blood relatives, but that the Doctor showed a paternal protectiveness of Susan that led her to nicknaming him Grandfather).

On the other hand, done well, it would be a brilliant show.

You know, The Doctor's early life being a mystery is not one of the things that appeals to me about the show. I like what is happening in the here and now. If they reveal events that lead up to him stealing the TARDIS and why he did it, and also maybe what happened to his first wife and his children, I wouldn't mind so long as the writers just didn't make it stupid. :P

And I know that one of the novels made them not related. That is something that I don't like, but I feel like the show has completely ignored that.

But ANYWAY...

...apparently Matt Smith has filmed his regeneration scene...
