This show has so many red herrings, it's starting to really hurt as a fan and idgaf. :monster:

Why couldn't we have gotten that Clara all last season? Thoroughly entertaining, a great range of acting, and a solid story. The beginning ramblings were a concern, but they soon smoothed out. Capaldi is going to be awesome. And oh my God on that kiss. Way to go Doctor Who.

Capaldi was always going to be brilliant, I'm thoroughly convinced this is going to be an epic series.

YES.

FINALLY.

I love Clara, but she finally developed a bloody lot in this episode. As sad as it sounds, I was more invested in her than the Doctor. That's not to take it away from Peter though, I just thought he was a lot stronger from the restaurant with Clara. But Clara, God, she was so vulnerable for the first time. The whole "hold your breath" is just so akin to "don't blink", bloody Moffat.

There was just no telling whether she'd stay or go and those pesky rumours didn't help to settle my mind either. Peter was compelling and you could tell he was channeling older Doctors, as he's a self-confessed fan of the show.

Also, the Eleventh Doctor cameo had me on the verge of tears. It's so heartbreaking and brilliant to see Clara on the phone to him and seeing the Twelfth Doctor, a brand new Doctor, standing right in front of her. He's telling her to stick with him, by this new him and it couldn't have been written any better. It was such an unexpected cameo, but apparently this was filmed last year with the finale and added in.

Also, am I the only one who was screaming RIVER RIVER RIVER at the woman who was in "heaven"? The way she talked about the Doctor reminded me so much of her.

I am so with you on that Ami, the Eleventh Doctor Cameo made me squeal with joy it was so nice to see him one last time and I loved how the Twelfth Doctor reminded her that even though his face is different it's still the same Doctor at the heart of it

Jenna really did a great job with Clara during this ep. I felt just as confused and vulnerable at times as she did while watching it but I love how even though he's changed she still put her faith in him.

I also felt a feeling of River during that last bit, perhaps a later regeneration of her, yes I know she died but you never know...it was quite cryptic at any rate, I liked it a lot

I echo all the sentiments expressed here.

the "I'm not your boyfriend." "I never thought you were." "I didn't say it was your mistake." exchange pretty much shattered my tiny little heart, so the Eleven cameo right after that wrecked me. The whole episode was pretty good with callbacks to old Moffat moments, but every single development with the Doctor and Clara paled to that whole exchange between her 11, & 12. (The only other moment that was nearly as strong of a punch to the gut was him mistaking Clara for Handles at the start).

Additionally, rewatching Matt's speech in Time of the Doctor, and seeing how he reacts just after having had that phone call with Clara to seeing her walk into the TARDIS is exceptionally poignant now.

Fuck. This episode is going to be a future classic, I can tell. Absolutely one of the best episodes of the Moffat era.

Agreed with basically all the sentiments stated above.

Did he push the leader out of the balloon or did he jump?

Personal opinion? Between offering him a drink over the, "I think I might have to kill you.", the fact that they burned the dinosaur alive only moments after the Doctor yelled from the rooftops that he was going to bring it home, and when standing on the bridge he asks if there have been any similar murders, it's clear that the Doctor sees lifeforms as lifeforms, and he'd kill to defend them now.

Great episode!
The 11, 12 and Clara thing at the end, sealed the (Capaldi) deal for me.

@X:
I think he jumped. I don't think he'd call himself the doctor if he ever killed someone.

Question:
Why did he say "I've seen this before!" when he and Clara were trying to escape from the robots below the restaurant? Was he referring to:

1) The robots, seeing as he later found out that they were similar to the ones on the Madame de Pompadour.

or

2) The location/event. Eg: He's been there before.

I'm guessing No. 2. It could explain the ad on the news paper. He (from the future) might have put it there himself to alter stuff that happened/will happen.

Or well... it could just be a third party like the doctor said.

Just a heads up, Tel: I'd spoiler tag all that, as there are probably people who haven't seen it yet. :)

I'm pretty sure he was referring to having seen the robots before, but I could be mistaken. It's still not clear who set the ad up though. I suppose we'll find out in a future episode, probably.

As for whether the Doctor pushed the leader off, it's anyone's guess at this point. It wouldn't be the first time the Doctor has killed an adversary, although it happens rarely these days.

I did not love the episode, mostly because the first half was just a complete mess. The second half once Capaldi was truly able to show his Doctor was much better. This was probably one of the best episodes for Clara and we finally got some real insight into Vastra's and Jenny's marriage.

Well, the Doctor's mental state was pretty incoherent at the beginning of the episode, so if the episode seemed disjointed, that might have been intentional.

He didn't seem too incoherent to me (the Doctor can never be too much of that), just at times too Eleven. I was ready to say that Twelve should've been established by a different writer but they brought it back from the restaurant forwards. I'm happy with it now.

He couldn't even remember Clara's name. That's pretty damn incoherent.

The Doctor's brain was completely addled in the first half of the episode. :monster:

As for me, I thought it was a decent episode. I liked all of the nods to episodes from previous seasons, and seeing Eleven call Clara was a nice touch. :)

The Doctor being incoherent wasn't the problem in itself, it was the way it was executed. He was acting too much like 11 and it wasn't working, nor did the slapstick tree scene. Though to me this wasn't because of Capaldi but director Ben Wheatley, whose strengths lie in drama and violence, and not comedy.

Yeah, the Doctor is able to do what needs to be done when pushed so
I definitely think that he pushed him.

Edit: A rewatch corrected my additional thought that I was confused on.

If the robot had died and that was that, I'd say he pushed him. But since he was saved and hasn't revealed it one way or the other and might appear again, I'm betting that he jumped and will eventually pick the Doctor's side against his new squeeze.
