E3 2014

So I'm taking a look now and I see flights from Glasgow to LAX (via Philadelphia) at 10:20am on the 8th of June for £677.69, which is the cheapest I've seen. Here's a link.

Accommodation wise I'm not fussy, I just would like to feel secure in leaving my stuff wherever we are, as I might bring my laptop to write stuff up - for this WiFi is obviously a must aswell. If I don't bring my laptop I'll be typing stuff up from my phone - I'll be taking notes on my phone the whole time we're there. Or I might just go for the old pen and paper scenario.

Anyway I saw the Holiday Inn as an option - it seems to strike a nice balance between affordable and really close to the convention centre. It might be booked out now though, I can't find it anymore.

EDIT: I can fly from anywhere in the UK, but I land in Glasgow at 4am on the 8th, so if I have to travel to say London we need to consider the 4-9 hour travel time +extra costs on the train or whatever. I need to land on the 9th at the latest so I can get a sleep in prior to actually going to the first day, and I can't fly out any earlier than 10am on the 8th just to give a safe margin of time after landing incase my flight back to the UK is delayed or something.

EDIT2: Howl, could you maybe ask your friends or ask around about hotels or anywhere near the place that's cheap but decent?

Theres a holiday Inn near the international airphort, or La quinta near LAX, but I'd recomment staying near the convention centre, unless you really like traffic. Hotels.com will save you a load of money

I can still see it on hotels.com

Edit: Nvm, it's a different one.

Bumping because Howl question is buried at the bottom of a long post :D

Also I'm selling my (very expensive) bike, so I'm hoping that'll generate some cash. It should hopefully sell, fingers crossed!

Lex,
If you want a Hotel that you could potentially walk to from the convention center (one that's not a rat motel), I'd go with the Marriot. It's less than a mile away from the convention center. (Although you should always tack on some extra mileage in case of obstacles and whatnot). The downside is that it's nice, and probably around $250+ per night.

I'll look tonight and see what your other options are; I know there is a Hilton (which is more reasonable) around here, but I'm still at work. :monster:

I checked out the value of FFVII on eBay. It's not much. :/ Mine's a platinum edition too, which doesn't help.
However, Etsy and eBay have a distinct lack of original FFVII based artwork. The only one on eBay is from 'Murca and is listed for $750.
To the pencil drawer! :monster:

I just posted all this retarded shit in the chit chat thread. :wacky:

Okay,

Instead of reviewing the hotels in the area, I've just had a quick search on hotels.com to see what we actually have to choose from. Based on what's available (and the price range), this is my recommendation: Holiday Inn. It's a generic option for travelers, buuut, having traveled across the country on multiple occasions, I can attest that Holiday Inn has always provided good or good enough service, no matter which state we crashed in for the night. Holiday Inn has locations near the airport and in downtown. Downtown's nighty rate at this hotel will run from about $250-350, near the airport should run for about half that price.

The closer you get to the city center, the higher the nightly rate will be. Not to mention that LA Live is right next to the convention center, and it's always packed even without E3 going on, so by the time you attempt to pay for a room downtown, it'll already be gone. I estimate that the average nightly cost for a room in downtown will be from $250-$450.

The further away you get from the city center, the more you'll have to deal with the regular workday commute, and the further away all your shit will be while you're out for the day. The second bit is sort of irrelevant because the potential for stolen shit is the same, whether it's happening right behind your back, or 10 miles away.

Regardless of which hotel you choose, I recommend the following:
1. Do not leave anything in your hotel room except for your clothing. :monster:
2. If you're trying to save money, rent a room for 1 person and sneak everyone else in afterwards.
3. Always leave the "do not enter" sign on your door.

Also,
I've been given the following days off from work:
Wednesday, June 11th - half day
Thursday, June 12th
Friday, June 13th

Can't take much / don't have vacation hours. :wacky:

Lex -

You need to do this.

You deserve it.

I find myself being drawn into the money fear situation again.

Anyway I'm posting this because today is apparently the day all the booth holders have decided to roll out their interview request emails.

CD Projekt Red asked for a 1 hour slot for us to cover The Witcher 3, which will be playable after a 45 minute presentation. Astro gaming have e-mailed for us to demo a new headset. About 10 other companies have also e-mailled to offer interview slots for us to cover them. Still waiting on SE, I don't know if we have to apply to them or what. Some of them are quite funny:

Greetings Person with Ears:

ASTRO Gaming and Skullcandy will again be at E3 this year. You, and your ears, will also be at E3 this year. We should hook up.

Here’s Why: ASTRO and Skullcandy are iconic gaming audio studios. You, and your ears, are iconic listening aficionados. ASTRO and Skullcandy plan to reveal several new and exclusive gaming headset partnerships, demonstrate new products and provide a sneak peek at what you, and your ears, can expect from them later this year. You, and your ears, are likely to enjoy this interaction so much that you will write about it. We like that.

Anyway something's been bugging me (not in a bad way, it's just been on my mind):

Lex, money isn't your problem - money will be sorted somehow. You just need to decide that you want to go. (Or that you don't want to go. Both are fine.)

I am DYING to go. More than anything. Right now I'm waiting to hear what Carlie's situation is - I thought about a bank loan, but there's no bank that will lend when I'm technically unemployed right now. I've got a few interviews lined up and I'm a recent graduate (I technically don't graduate until July) so I'm not worried about staying unemployed for long.

I am in general a financially secure person. There was one period about 2 years ago where I had to pay for car repairs and it left me with no income because nowhere would hire me during the summer break, but other than that, I do not like to take financial risks. I'm usually the one who loans out money to people.

It is honestly not about not wanting to go. It's about the expense and the amount of money I'd be "borrowing" were that the case. If I had the money I'd do it for one of you guys, so I know how hypocritical that is and I'm being a massive pain in the ass but an aversion to borrowing money from people is hardwired into me. I think it's because my parents were so terrible with money. Like I have spreadsheets with monthly expenditures and whatnot. I am very very careful with my money.

I'm just trying to hammer home the point that yes, I really, really want this. But I can't guarantee there isn't a part of me that - if I were to loan the money from Tets for example - would be satisfied with it. I mean what if it's crap and I've put someone out for that amount of money?

I don't even have enough shit to sell or I would genuinely do that - but I mean there's not much point in selling all my gaming systems to go to a gaming convention and come home with nothing to play them on is it!? lol. I'm just trying to be as open and transparent as possible here, I don't want anyone to think I'm playing them for fools or anything. I know you all trust me and I trust you guys so I need to keep playing it by ear and see how things are but just know that E3 is like a dream to me and I appreciate that you guys want this for me too. I just need the money to fall out of the sky :P

(see if there are any lottery winners reading this feel free to just dump some money in my direction that would be great please)

Nobody is forcing you to go, and I don't think anyone here is going to feel let down if you don't. We're all just overwhelmed with excitment that you were accepted. :monster:

Plus, E3 happens every-single-year.

I wonder about that too. We could always contact them and ask?

This is on SE's press site:
For E3 and tradeshow appointment booking, please contact Bender/Helper Impact at [email protected].

I actually get that, I'd feel the same in your situation. :monster2:

OK so it looks like we should reach out to them in that case. Give it until next week incase there are any e-mails sent out about it, then we'll see what we're doing re: Square etc.

This past week I've been desperately looking at my cellphone every single time an email notification comes in, hoping that is from E3 with either my approval or rejection. I really need to know already, this is not healthy behavior. :(

Lex, Fangu's point -- and it's a good one -- is that you're overthinking it a bit, and you proved that with your last post. Either you want to go bad enough that the other factors you mentioned don't take priority, or you don't. And there's nothing wrong with either decision. You just need to make a decision and stop leaving it up to the Money Fairy. =P

Believe me, I want to go myself, but I haven't bothered applying because I needed to move this month and do a lot of other shit with the money that was ultimately more important to me. I could have easily put the travel and lodging expenses on a credit card and said the hell with a couple of other things, and, no, I won't worry about having a cushion in case my gf and I run into some tough financial straits in a few months. But this was all more important, so I made that decision and there is no question of whether I'm going. I'm not.

It's a lot easier to plan how far you need to go when you've decided what is or isn't going to happen.

Lex you're a really nice guy, and I know it's not much of anything, but I'd be willing to offer up my old used FF games if it would somehow help with some kind of tiered donation thing.

^This kind of thing is making my day and breaking my heart at the same time. Thank you so much for the offer Claymore. I'm not going to let you guys sell shit to send me to E3. I don't feel right about it, I'm not comfortable with it, and it would mess with my brain too much.

You're right Tres, I'm overthinking it. I have a tendency to do that :/ But this isn't a case of I have the money lying around somewhere as a financial cushion - I have zero savings right now and because I'm shit hot at budgeting, I've been living on 40% of the minimum wage in this country (i.e. my only income has been bursary/student loan) because my education left me zero time for part time work this past year. I made sacrifices to get a (hopefully) good degree, to the best of my ability.

The money fairy might actually come through though, seriously. I just need to wait for a bit (not talking about a random stranger giving me money XD).

Yep. :)

Or, well - not overthinking, overexplaining? In your scenario I'd be thinking a lot about this too. Whatever you decide, it's cool. Also, don't look at people volunteering to donate etc as a gift to *you* in particular, look at it as a gift to the site and the community in general. We'd all be there with you (two) in spirit. It would be cool having TLS represented on such a big event.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I JUST GOT A CALL REGARDING MY JOB APPLICATION FOR E3!!!!!
I told the recruiter that I was so glad to have someone to verbally nerd to, since she asked my about my history with Square Enix, which titles I've played, etc. I totally goofed and said "I'm so sorry but Breath of Fire is one of my favorite games, and I know it was made by Capcom". I was just too excited. I should have told her that I passed all of the SeeD exams without cheating. 8|
When she asked me about my favorite games I just forgot everything including my name because I was overwhelmed with excitement and I forgot to tell her how much I LOVE SAGA FRONTIER!!!!

Pleasepleaseplease let her call me next week for the group interview!!!!

~*faint*~

EDIT: I'm going to send a follow up letter explaining that I should be punished for playing Breath of Fire and that I am eternally loyal to SquEnix. ;___;
