Episode was really good. Definitely starting to feel like they had to hold back and fill the first half with filler and constant breaks just to wait until The Winter Soldier is out.

Yeah, it kind of makes me wish they had just started the show in January and run from then on instead of all the constant breaks and the like. But whatever. Episode ruled.

Well, for the inevitable season 2 there will be no Marvel movies to tie in with until the season finale which would possibly overlap with Age of Ultron. So hopefully season 2 will be more to the point.

That being said, I still enjoyed the series even when it was on first-half-filler mode.

Yeah, it's not like the show was ever bad, but it really felt like it wasn't living up to its potential for the first several months. These last few episodes have finally felt like the show was everything it should have been from the beginning.

Reading now. That Entertainment Weekly interview really makes me wonder even more than I was already doing

if Ward is under mind control again.

But what we can do is create an intimacy with the audience and create characters that our audience is invested in, so when you find out that someone on the team is not who you think they are — at least now, not to say there aren’t more twists to come — that’s the fun of it.

Between that and the fact that Ward seemed almost like an automaton in that stinger scene it seems like there's more going on here than just being evil.

edit: and they even explicitly ask that question a bit later, which takes a lot of the fun out of my having made that observation:

That’s our hope. I believe the team will be split on what does this mean for Ward? Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Is he being controlled?

...I actually kind of wonder whether Simmons is Hydra. Wasn't Hydra after the miracle cure? And wasn't Simmons adamant about sending it to HQ for testing and shit? Maybe she just wanted Hydra to get it...

Wouldn't it be delicious drama if the inseparable Fitzsimmons turned out to have different allegiances?

It's a Whedon show, so I wouldn't be surprised. If there's one thing Whedon loves it's making his characters miserable, and that would certainly make Fitz miserable

Incidentally yesterday's plot twist does put some perspective on something.

Ward. According to the interview Brett Dalton gave, the plot twist involving in Ward was in the plans since at least Yes Men. So, while everyone was yelling at the screen for Ward to DO SOMETHING YOU IDIOT, and getting the impression that he was a terrible Agent of SHIELD, maybe he didn't do anything because he wanted what happened to happen (in other words, he was a terrible agent for a completely different reason). Possibly it didn't go exactly as planned but that's beside the point. Maybe he wanted to bring an Asgardian into the Hydra fold or at least to do some damage to SHIELD on the down-low.

I'm don't know for sure that that's what was happening and I don't know if we'll ever get confirmation but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what the writers had in mind.

Well Cobie Smulders schedule is a bit more open now that How I Met Your Mother ended. Who knows she might even end up being featured more frequently which would be awesome.

I'll admit, they totally underutilized her. She could have been a quadruple agent, but they wrote her as just a red herring. A very temporary one no less.

But then again, I'm still catching up on the older New Avengers/Thunderbolts stuff, and am still not sure if she really does anything there either. So far she's basically around to confuse Spider-Man's brain.

Design-wise, she carries herself well though, kind of like a G.I. Joe Baroness or something. Kudos for finding someone that looks exactly like she does in the comics.

Broken record time: It really should not have taken blowing up S.H.I.E.L.D. for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to figure out how to be good, but it worked.

You didn't misread: Col. Talbot really did just show up for the video-call cameo. I assume he'll turn up for real soon enough. I wonder if this is the plan for Season 2: The Agents as self-reliant renegades, flying around HYDRA-busting while being hunted by Talbot because S.H.I.E.L.D. is officially considered bad guys now. I'd watch that.
