Spoiler-free review requested. :monster:

I actually can't see the movie until next month since I'm already in the red with my budget for July. D':

Don't bother.

I was dragged to see the film and wasn't impressed. The action scenes were too quick for my eyes to follow (we went 3D IMAX), there was some character development but not as much as I hoped and I only found the first half of the film remotely interesting.

Also, the only part that got me excited was seeing Rob Kazinsky. He used to be one of my favourite characters in EastEnders and was so glad to see him in something huge in Hollywood. <3

And the fact I got a free limited poster. May post at some point.

There's your problem. I don't understand why people see live action action movies in 3d. 3d makes things blurrier, not something you want during a fast paced action scene. Also the imax doesn't help that either, since things are so much bigger and in your face. I'd never watch an imax 3d movie.

I really enjoyed it. The fights were good, the design of the kaiju were great, the story was decent and kept things moving. Also one of the few times when I actually felt that a child actor was terrified and not just acting.
And shocker:
A summer blockbuster movie ends with the male and female leads who share a deep connection DON'T end up together?!? :O I mean, yes, they could at some point, but their final shot together is a hug, not a kiss. And they have very little hints at them wanting a sexual relationship together. Brava.

My only real complaint (aside from minor movie mistakes stuff) was the main characters kindof fall to the side at about the midpoint. It starts focusing more on the overall situation then ends with a character moment.

It had nothing to do with the 3D part at all. Even in normal 2D/3D, I bet the action scenes would be too quick for me. When there were normal scenes involving the characters talking and such, it was actually great. It almost reminded me of The Hobbit all over again in that increased speed mode (I can't remember for the life of me what it is!).

I have no idea why you felt that any of the action had something like the HFR 3D effect, because it's just another 24fps film and not 48. (TBQH, 24 fps camera blur when panning drives me nuts, and I loved the HFR version of the Hobbit, because that didn't happen). The Jagers are also visibly limited a bit by physics of being so large, so they're not moving TOO unrealistically all things considered. I didn't think that things moved too quickly to follow at all. :\ Maybe it was a theater thing?

I will also see it on Sunday. :monster:

Fixxed that for you. :monster:

I would like a spoiler heavy review.

Spoiler-FREE review that matches my sentiments is here: http://io9.com/pacific-rim-is-the-greatest-fairy-tale-of-the-twenty-fi-752579393

Let me preface my spoiler-filled review with a bit of a statement about the film:

I left being a lot more disheartened than I'd expected to, but not for the reasons that you might be thinking while reading this sentence. I want MORE. The world building in Pacific Rim is long and full, and I want more. I left feeling a bit like when I was a kid and I'd just discovered the Godzilla films and I wanted to just rush out and rent every VHS that the movie store had to fill my brain with everything there was. The difference being that I've already read Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero and I believe that as of right now, that's all there is. If I was a kid, I'd be out buying toys of Cherno Alpha and Kaiju and sitting in my backyard, imagining out stories of how they fared and became the legendary pilots they were leading up to the film. This film gave me everything that my childhood imagination crafted those old Japanese films into when I was a kid, but it gave that to me as an adult and I can't believe how much I'm craving more of it, and unexpected sadness that hit me after seeing it knowing that I can't just get my hands on more of this awesome world was something that I really didn't expect.

I guess I'm just gonna have to go watch it a bajillion more times and maybe buy some figures to set up at my desk at work and let my imagination go nuts.

:awesomonster:

So, having read Tales From Year Zero, I went in to this movie knowing a little bit more about our cast of characters, but let's hit the basics.

The introduction was covered really well, but I wish that we got a slightly better sense of how much the world was actually damaged by the Kaiju ever since Trespasser first mowed through San Francisco. I think that slightly more visually explanatory depth to the scale of destruction that had been caused would have helped, even if it was just 2 minutes. The introduction of the film before the proper title will be the thing that will leave you dying to know more.

From there, we get into our main character's experience in Gipsy Danger battling against Knifehead gives you that really good feel for what the connection that the two get within the Drift is, and how it then gives the Jager its persona. This delivers a sense of scale that's absolutely just mindblowingly excellent and sets up for everything else that's to come, as well as give a sense of weight to the risks and difficulties that the pilots experience.

The we move up to the current situation with the Jagers getting defeated and the Kaiju coming in more quickly. Idris Elba manages to carry the moments that could have been a total cheese fest with a level of stern sincerity that makes the film work brilliantly. Moving in to the Shatterdome and seeing all the other Jagers was just amazing and thrilling. I'd love to have seen that place operating at full capacity. I also really love that the Crimson Typhoon's team are triplets, Cherno Alpha's are a husband/wife duo, Striker Eureka are a father/son team, and then you've got Gipsy Danger as the newcomer. Really cool dynamic even if it's not heavily explored. I also love that you hear Japanese & Russian used in the film.

The tension with Mako & Raleigh was great as well as the other pilots (especially Striker Eureka's team). The mecha all having different eras and tactical specializations was a really neat addition. The copilot testing was interesting and personally knowing more about Stacker's history with Mako & his own experience in the Jager program from Tales From Year Zero made this especially interesting to see that relationship and its effects. Once they were in, I was wondering if/why they didn't to drift testing BEFORE hooking up Gipsy Danger's head to its body, but I figure budget cuts can probably account for that.

Seeing Mako's history as the Sole Survivor of Onibaba's attack on Tokyo was amazingly well done, and it was a really good introduction to some of the risks of going into combat and Drifting with someone. Then jumping from there into real combat got things really tense (with some of the humorous but earnest sciencey bits in between that I'm just gonna slide past for now, but the awkward brit and overly enthusiastic American scientist was done well if a little heavily cliche).

The Kaiju Battle that takes its first double event is just terrifying, especially with two category IV kaiju, and you get a sense for just how intensely dangerous they are, even moreso than the encounter with Knifehead (Cat III). It's also the first time you start to get a sense that they might be a little more than just beasts. The design work on the mecha and Kaiju really shines in this who series of epic as all hell battles.

From there the rush to attempt to get the plan accomplished at the last minute, along with the scientists attempting to make sure that it works was managed really well with the new tension of bigger and more badass Kaiju with even more especially with the combat being under water. I do wonder how an escape pod re-exited the rift without a Kaiju signature, but mayhaps it's a one-way barrier. I'm rushing the summary a bit because I've got a lot of work to do, but I wanna get this posted, but the conclusion and the way the fights goes was NEVER what I was expecting which was refreshing and excellent and made the victories really hold weight.

Overall, I wanna see more of the peak of the Jager program ultra bad, as well as tests attempting to destroy the Rift. and maybe I'll flesh things out more later if you want me to.

Watched it. It was fun, enjoyable, cool and a fun tribute to super robots. Although it's reaaaaally simple and lacks any depth, the characters are likeable but IMO they are generic. It defied certain movie cliches but it followed some. I wish it allowed more character exploration and a deeper view in some of the relationships which are very interesting but it didn't. It's good enough but it could have been better without being too complicated for children.

7/10

@Edit

Also Mako is a good female character relative to a lot of female characters in Hollywood, and as a POC she’s really good. She also shares some very interesting relationships. My opinion however is that if you’re familiar with anime tropes she and the rest of the cast may appear to be generic, but maybe it’s intentional.

I watched it yesterday. Fun movie, predictable, and not very taxing on the brain. Great action sequences, and the jaeger designs are really neat. Run of the mill characters and character arcs. I was disappointed that there wasn't much on the jaeger teams from anywhere other than the US. I especially wished I could see more of Cherno Alpha in action.

Neural Bridge Operator. I maintain the stability of the drift. So basically the job of the Joseph Gordon Levitt lookin dude with the bow-tie.

I'm cool with that.
