Circular logic is their forte. They start off with the assumption that Cloud loves Aerith and work their way backward from there. Similarly, they assume Cloud will never love Tifa romantically and view everything through that lens. So "realizing their feelings for each other" will never be romantic, because Cloud will never, ever love Tifa, even if that phrase is predominantly used in a romantic sense in English (and if I believe some of you know-it-alls, in Japanese as well).

I have a theory, that if Aerith did survive the stab then cloudy and her are fated to die together by the end of their cool story. Maybe thats why they decided to off her early on and to make up for their supposed double death, Cloudy became the personification of emo by AC.

When you include the word "mutual" people can argue it could mean mutual feelings of any kind. You can have mutual feelings of hatred, disgust, lust etc. I can't think of any particular examples but I have read "mutual feelings of hatred" and so on before.

At any rate, when you consider what directly follows it ("and live together in AC and DC"), not to mention some of the more Cloti-ish content of Tifa's profile, the game, movie and novellas. It'd be rather dense to say it wasn't romantic feelings in this case.

Yes, I've heard of having mutual feelings of disgust, etc., but you wouldn't say two people realize/discover their feelings (of digust) for each other. Quex is right; I have NEVER heard that particular phrase used for anything other than romantic feelings.

The ending of Advent Children and pretty much the entirety of Crisis Core should be considered two giant torpedoes to neatly pair off Cloud/Tifa and Zack/Aerith (albeit the latter only in the afterlife).

• Though one would think that Aerith's ultimate fate, if nothing else, would have cleared matters up sooner...

The thing is this is the entire sentence.

She and Cloud came to realize their feelings for each other in the end of the story, and live together in AC and DC.

Now just "feelings for each other" would be enough for most people to let them know it is romantic. But "and live together" should seal the deal for even the most skeptical (rational) person.
