My PS3 died. I bought a new one, and though my hard drive is perfectly fine, there is apparently an INCREDIBLY stupid feature that save data is unique to the ps3 that created it unless you directly transfer it...which requires a functional console.

SO all my save day is sitting on my coffee table in a fully-functional hard drive and there's nothing I can do about it

But Sonic Generations' save file isn't copy protected. O.o

Or did just never create any backups of your PS3 harddrive?
My PS3 died around this time last year and I was fortunate to have backed up my harddrive just mere days before it. Sonic 4 was copy protected though and I couldn't restore that save file to my new PS3...but at least Sonic 4 is really short. =/

In order to do the 30 second trial all you need to do is beat either one or both acts of a level to make it available. I think so, anyway. So you could at least jump into the Green Hill fun right away.

I haven't done a backup in several months, I'm afraid. But as I said in the things that piss you off thread, if my hard drive had died, it would be a drag, but I could only blame myself. What's so irritating is that hard drive is perfectly fine but I can't access it.

There might be temporary fixes you can try. Maybe you'll get the console working for long enough to do a transfer.

I tried the hairdryer trick to do just that. Didn't work. I wonder actually if overheating is what killed it. When it died it didn't feel hot at all, I have felt it much hotter in the past. It smelled very electrical and ozone-y, but it wasn't hot. So maybe it died from something else?

And I talked to Sony on Tuesday Tenny and confirmed there is no way to get PS3 data off the harddrive of a non-functioning console.
His exact words: "Officially - no. Unofficially - I have no idea."
But even the word on the internets seems to be no.

Maybe get it checked somewhere to see what the problem is. There could be a variety of causes after all.

Now I'm realising that having never backed my PS3 up is a bad idea. To be honest, I didn't even really know you could do that (knew you could transfer stuff, but not back it up).
