While I was googling away my literary shame I also noticed the words beauteous and merciless were used in Longfellow's translation of The Divine Comedy.

Reading this silly translation thread and as OWD says the same patterns are there. Information based on a secondary source is used to inform only to discover its not as near solid as anticipated, backed into a corner, victim card is played while a dollop of finger-pointing is actioned while the debater seeks for a dignified escape to his/her flailing argument.

Rinse. Repeat.

Having read the whole silly main page - in my humble opinion, people need to stop shilly shallying with any other response aside from "explain why beloved does not fit the translation of koibito". Because every other moment of slurry logic is buried deep beneath that single, most important question which to my inspection hasn't been answered.

Got to give Cleris their due - they are masters at evasion and diversion. The whole argument is propped on a point that really isn't been surgically explored - and you could do that op with a bloody buster sword. The wound is already wide open.
