Going back over this whole 'dimly' thing on a different forum it's rather funny. (screencaps can be provided upon request)

Seriously? They couldn't even admit before this that Cloud liked Tifa when he made the promise? Ugh..

I'd love to hear why it doesn't matter. Cuz it's the past right? That's why they reiterated it at the culmination of a major plot point, right? Because it's unimportant?

As normal context is key. When the promise was made they were 13 and 14 respectively. Of course it's going to be a 'dim' love. They really are not mature enough to completely understand such things I would think.

But as was shown IN THE GAME. Over the next two years both of them take it to heart. And those feeling grow as they do.

Sure maybe those feelings don't manifest in the healthiest of ways. Cloud becomes deeply ashamed he can't live up to his promise of becoming SOLDIER. And Tifa constructs a bit of a fantasy version of Cloud in her head (which will be a problem years later thanks to Jenova). But they are there.

I don't know if 'fantasy' version is necessarily the right way to put it. It's technically accurate, but it has connotations that aren't strictly there. What she did was believe Cloud could have made good on his promise, which he might have been able to had HE believed, ironically enough.

Also as shown in game these feelings do not leave Tifa. She cares deeply for Cloud throughout the game. And as soon as Cloud regains himself those feelings are back and stronger than ever. So seven years after a promise made under the stars these two lovebirds finally put those feeling out there for the other to know (with words and...other things).

There you have it. The epic (and at times tragic) love story of FF7.

It's not particularly tragic. A bit harrowed, sometimes troubled, but not tragic.

I wasn't able to glean a real reason why in that thread. Maybe it was discussed elsewhere. But I assume it's because Cloud is hopelessly in love with Aerith so past love doesn't matter. Even though they simply cannot prove Cloud had any romantic feeling for her whatsoever.

I think the term idealistic has been tossed around to describe her thoughts on the situation.

Well there is enough tragedy going on around them that it fucks with their relationship (and lives) for years. Preventing it. But once they are finally able to come together. Then no it's not tragic in that sense.

It's good to look back 5 years, before AC, and see just how wildly off the mark their speculation was/ is. And how on the ball ours was.

Hell, from the trailer alone, I reconstructed the new bits of the Bahamut trailer, in sequence, almost perfectly. I didn't even expect it to be as close to what I predicted as it was.

Well I had my more visceral reaction to the predictions they were making before AC days (and like 20 pages) ago. But I'm over that (mostly).

Speaking of On the ball. Someone needs to dig up Hitos post about how koibito is significant when describing someone. But how it can be used mistakenly by a character. "Your my koibito Ryu".

This was well before CoL as I recall. Somewhere in this thread I believe.

And we need to slap it in the pinkers faces when they finally come out of hiding. "WE EXPLAINED THIS A LONG TIME AGO WHEN YOU STILL SAID IT WAS TWO WORDS".

Not to say that's always the case, since emotions are a subjective thing. You can think to yourself, "hey, Billy's my koibito" while Billy might be all "woah, back off woman". However, we aren't talking about what Tifa thinks herself. Because this was Nomura, talking about a fictional character in the third person.

Speaking of taking off with Zack. Did they tweak the scene at the end with him an Aerith? I thought I saw some screens where they disappear at the same time instead of her lingering a bit longer.

In truth, Aerith really wanted to do it herself. But she couldn't carry out the task. That's why she entrusted Tifa with it. She entrusted Tifa with all the feelings she had for Cloud in her heart. She entrusted them to the one that was going to "live" together with Cloud...

And so, Tifa accomplished the task. Collating her own memories with that of Cloud's, she looked for the things that only the real Cloud could know. Proofing it all, the closed door was opened. Not leaving Soldier allowed Jenova's power that was implanted in Cloud to copy the Soldier traits of his close friend, Zack. Drawing out the deep memories that were firmly clammed up inside all of that, she reconstructed his original character instead of the fake character he created to protect himself.
"You did it, Tifa. Thank you... I'm a little jealous of you but, do take care of Cloud and the upper world."
Tifa embraced Cloud tightly as he returned to his senses. Aerith watched as both of them returned to the surface while smiling like an affectionate mother.

I mean, why would you put that in your article about canon though, that's immaterial. Aerith's perception of Tifa's feelings and how that will relate to who Cloud ends up with is immaterial, b/c MotP is canonz and proves once and for all that VII is about a love that carries beyond the grave. Oh yeah and Zack was too busy fucking around for four years in a tube so Aerith couldn't possibly love him. What an asshole ladies man he turned out to be, right?

I actually like Vincent/Tifa, mostly in a Cloud/Yuffie canon. ...with AerSeph on the side.

But Cloud and Aerith don't really have a chance. She never knew the real him and the main reason she exists is because as a Cetra, she has to protect the Lifestream. Not because Cloud feels a tremendous desire to be with her. He DOES care for her, she's a huge failure in his life when he couldn't protect someone. But the real Cloud never got to know her, so that basically destroys any chance for canon Cloud/Aerith.

If one part of your couple is dead and they never got to know who their partner really is? I'd say that means your couple still doesn't make sense after their death.

No, you are right. I re-watched it and it has visibly changed. Zack was one step ahead of Aerith, but they both disappeared at the same time, no lingering for anyone.
