I actually knew someone who had a fondness for adding "yo" at the end of his sentences.

I didn't like him much.

You mean no one talks like that, in english. :monster:

You'd have to find some suitable, eccentric English equivalent to some guy punctuating everything he says with the "yo" modifier. It's like how Naruto in the Japanese anime ends everything he says with "dattebyo" which doesn't really mean anything either. So they translated as him saying "Believe it" as emphasis to whatever he said.

"

Reno could be Canadian and end all his sentences with "eh?"
"These guys are too tough, eh?" "Let's go for a Molson, eh?" "How about it, babe, eh?"
Yet somehow it's hard to picture Reno in his Leafs shirt....

I occasionally add "yo" to the end of my sentences, but only if I want to emphasize something.

I picked it up from my sister, who studied Japanese and studied abroad in Japan.

Imagining Reno in a bar fight because his drinking buddy turned out to be a Senators fan isn't that hard, though.

I say 'DESU NE~~~~" when I want to be an obnoxious weeaboo cock.

But that's just me.

Cloud at the beginning of the game didn't change at all from the end.

When I want to sound like a total dick, I add "That's what she said" to the end of everything other people say. No Japanese needed, yo.

Anyway, people thinking what happens in Kingdom Hearts or Tactics influences Compilation canon.

Those aren't canon. Ehergeiz is! :awesome:

It's too bad they don't acknowledge the "yo" thing. I almost think it would best translate as him speaking in slang, almost.

Square's translations tend to annoy me, the more I look at some fan translations. There's a lot of little things that are lost due to a loose translation, little things that would make the dialogue just that much better.

All I keep thinking of is the one game -- Chrono Trigger, I think -- where they gave Frog the 'old English' dialect, and there wasn't an equivalent to that in the Japanese version. (It's either him or FF6 Cyan, I forget.)

I'm not sure about Frog, but I know Cyan spoke in Old English.

It just added to Fujin's charm for me :monster:

And it made the moment where she tried to speak reason to Seifer in the Lunatic Pandora, in a clear, normal, and kind manner of speech, all the more memorable. That was one of the best moments in the game for me.

I agree with you Mako. :3

Fujin was one of my favorite characters too. and that scene was quite emotional. ;-;

i'll let you get on with FFVII. :monster:

I think I was saying it more as the fact they aren't gonna be all 'buddy-buddy' anytime soon, cause I see shit of Cloud and Reno yukking it up while Rude helps Tifa cook in fanfics all the time with no OOC tag. Cause that just isn't realistic for the feelings between the two groups. :\

I see it as unlikely more because Cloud isn't the type to be yukking it up to begin with.

Honestly, I don't see a sign post-FFVII that the members of AVALANCHE hold any actual grudge against the Turks. Tifa even seemed happy to hear from Reno at the beginning of Advent Children and playfully used his speech emphasis there herself.

Cloud definitely wasn't happy with the idea of rebuilding Shin-Ra, but the fact that he was willing to hear these guys out and seemed like he was about to join them before Reno said that? That suggests to me that even he doesn't hold that many harsh feelings toward them.

If anything, any time we see talk of sin and blame post-FFVII, it's usually the heroes attributing it to themselves.

I'm not disagreeing with the fact that Shin-Ra was most responsible for all that happened -- but losing as badly as they did and being genuinely repentent goes a long way.

EDIT: Yeah, Mako, I loved that scene with Fujin as well. One of my favorites from that game.

THIS. I remember first noticing this with Crisis Core, watching fan-subbed videos on Youtube. My favorite scene was the three-way fight on the Junon canon, and my favorite line was where Sephiroth asks Angeal to 'put down the toy sword' -- then I got the game and watched it in English and the whole scene was just about shot in the ass for me because of the translation. :'(

I always wondered what would have happened if Reno had kept his mouth shut. :monster:

Also, who's to say that even if ShinRa got back on it's feet, would it be the same kind of company? The Planet seems pretty anti-mako after the original game ended. ShinRa would have to have a different focus. And if
Rufus is pouring his money and resources into the WRO, it seems kind of clear there that his interests have shifted.

Cloud didn't seem at all enthusiastic about socializing with Shinra much less the thought of working with them as evidenced further with ACC.

Cloud has no love for any of them obviously.

One assumption that always annoyed me (and gets me flamed really bad) is when I say Cloud is NOT AN EMO/DEPRESSING charactter in the original game. In AC he was feeling guilty, yes but the whole film was about the after effects of the events in the game. In the original game, there are some textual evidence that he was actually a rather encouraging, and I would venture to say, uplifting character, but his portrayal in AC seems to have gotten the fanbase to think he is some whiny character, not to mention mis-using the term emo, and thus catagorizing FFVII as a depressing game overall. The themes may be more dark and serious, but I find it annoying when people say FFVII is depressing because Cloud is a depressing character.

It's sort of hard to translate some Japanese stuff, like the fact Fuujin always spoke in short, polite sentences. It translated as her yelling shit like she was deaf, which was just weird as fuck.
I don't know how polite Fuujin was, Japanese politeness always makes everything really long instead of short :monster: Fuujin spoke more of a mock-Chinese, only using kanji.

It's too bad they don't acknowledge the "yo" thing. I almost think it would best translate as him speaking in slang, almost.
Isn't that what they did anyway?

It was essentially a slightly more complex version of what we got, wasn't it? Lacking tenses and linking particles and such?

Isn't that what they did anyway?

Close to.

Eh? I don't remember Reno speaking any slang. Except for maybe "I think she wants you to move on, man"... the man is kinda slangy I guess.

That's kind of a stretch, though. I really don't think it's possible to make Reno talk in English the way he doe in Japanese without making him sound completely ridiculous. Translating that "zoto" word, or whatever it is, and having him constantly saying, "yo!" I'm sorry but nuh-uh no way no how.

I don't think that's even 100% correct anyway. That true?

Partly? I'd say entirely. That, and people's stupidity. :monster:
You can't say AC/ACC didn't contribute, since a lot of folks who watched it didn't play the game so they just assumed he was a mopey bastard in general.

It's probably as close to 100% as one could get with English. Really, anything that clearly added emphasis would serve the purpose -- and "yo" is instantly recognizable in that role.

By the way, am I the only one who actually likes the "yo"? Don't use it every time it showed up in the Japanese script, no, but to remove all of it is even worse as it ignores an element of the character.

Obviously you don't need it on a line like "The time of my life!" but they couldn't give us a "Hurry it up, yo"/"Just get the damn thing, yo" or a "This is bad, yo!"? That's lazy.

Suzaku

Reno's "zo, to" isn't a word, has absolutely no meaning, and has no English equivalent.

It's a colloquial speech pattern, basically an accent, adopted by the speaker to make their speech sound a certain way. There are many of these. Some of them are used to make the speaker sound cute, or childish, or tough, or spunky, or whatever. Reno's is supposed to give the impression that he's laid back and informal.

To best translate that into English, you give him laid back and informal dialogue in English, which means you use contractions, reductions, and appropriate slang. That's exactly what Square-Enix has done with his dialogue.

Some examples using your phrases...

Hurry it up! -> Get movin'!
Just get the damn thing! -> Wouldja grab that friggin' thing already!?
This is bad! -> Aww, shit!

I agree that an overall lazy speech pattern serves the purpose as well as a single word emphasizing his informality would, but I'm not sure that I feel they've taken it as far as they should have.

At least as far as the English dub goes. I can't speak to any of the other languages it's been localized to.

I feel like an occasional "yo" would have helped put adequate distance between Reno's lines and, say, Cloud's.

ForceStealer

Double Growth
Reno doesn't speak anything like Cloud. Can you see Cloud saying anything like "You losers are chasin' the wrong guy!" or "Yeah, Rude! Lookin' sharp."?

Putting "yo" on the end of his sentence does not equate to what he's doing in Japanese, having him speak very casually and with slang does, and that's what they did.

The Twilight Mexican

I just threw Cloud in as a random example. Obviously he doesn't talk quite as casually in the English, but it's still not that great a divide.

My point is that it would have helped -- and would have echoed the Japanese construction in putting a specific, informal "something" at the end of his lines to emphasize it. But if we disagree, we just disagree. I can live with that.

I vote yes to having the next FF character that has a method of finishing his sentence to be translated as 'CTHULHU FHTAGN!'.

"Like that's totally like awesome CTHULHU FHTAGN!"
"He has really big dicku CTHULHU FHTAGN!"
"Ah yeh beat meh CTHULHU FHTAGN!"

It'd be awesome and just.
