I've taken a partiular liking to FTL this week, it's... interesting. Also aggravating because the final level / sector / boss is like over 9000 times as difficult as whatever's before it, grr. And the randomness factor means you can't end up there the way you'd prefer to.
FTL is amazing, and I can't sing it's praises enough (though I've tried to in this thread any chance that I get!
)
At first I absolutely hated it for the rogue-like elements. The sheer frustration at losing crucial crew members, at alien spiders going on a killing spree, at ships that vastly overpowered my own, or being forced to choose between fuel or weapons .. with most choices down to the random roll of the Gods. But I soon realised that the source of my frustration was also my joy. It's exactly because each experience is a completely new throw of the dice that I was becoming so deeply involved in managing my crew, in making those careful choices and growing attached to them because I knew that death was around every corner.
I think it's a fantastic game. And with every new journey you take, the more tactics you build up and an awareness of the overall game world so that you can (attempt to) make better choices. The fact that the final boss is just so unfair if you're not prepared just makes those few victories even more sweet. Seriously, if anyone likes space sims, then don't let the randomness put you off. This game is worth the very small investment.
Did you get the Advanced Edition in the sale? The new systems, weapons and enemies are really cool and add even more layers to different strategies.
