Another question - Takahashi's trading card game (the real kind) wasn't created until the second anime series, correct?

And thanks boys. I just wanted to make sure because there's this one person who keeps claiming to have read the manga and anime and yet continues to criticize the fact that it's stupid that the 'Pharaon' Pharaoh and Priest Seto look exactly like Yugi and Seto (who would've thought!?), because the only one who can 'pretend to look egyptian' is 'rishid.'

And apparently you must be well educated in anime and manga in order to have good taste, like the French.

The OCG by Konami was created around when the second anime series was broadcast, yes. But the rules for the OCG were pretty much created right when Battle City started in the manga, and got progressively more standard as the story went on, and all.

And oh lord, looks like you've stumbled across one of the many YGO idiot anime freaks out there. Good luck with that noe. :monster:

lol, I love the Duelist Kingdom rules.

Yeah, how they made up random cards on the spot and pulled effects out of their ass....they never really got over that did they?

The one thing I have against GX and 5Ds is a very simple thing - remember when Yugi faces Marik and Strings, and he figures out how to crack Marik's combo and make him deck out? I still get chills watching that to this day, to see Yugi pull an epic comeback like that and triumph over Marik's seemingly flawless strategy was amazing. Marik slips out of every elaborate counter-combo and defense Yugi has and just laughs as he pushes him further back into a corner, and in the end Yugi doesn't find a way out of Marik's combo - he finds a way to turn it against him. And Marik just stands there with a look of horror as he watches Yugi create an infinite loop that leads to his defeat.

Nothing I've seen thus far in GX or 5Ds has captured that same feeling for me. Granted, I was a kid back then, but I stand by what I said. To me, Yugi taking out Slifer is the guy's crowning moment of awesome throughout the franchise. Not even little Yugi taking out all three gods at once in the duel with Atem tops that for me.

However, GX and 5Ds have their crowning moments too.

GX - vs Yugi's deck, until Jaden won anyway. It was awesome seeing the classic mons in action, and being used to pummel Jaden no less. For pretty much the entire episode Dimitri was in control of that duel, it was only due to Flame Wingman that Jaden won at the end. It's that kind of ruthless abuse on the hero that makes their eventually comeback worth watching and waiting for. That, and Adrian vs Yubel/Jesse. It reminded me of Bakura vs Marik, and the battle of Exodia vs the Demons was a sight to behold, especially when their initial strategies fail and they fall back to their secondary deck themes.

5Ds - a missed Crowning Moment was the recent Team Unicorn duel. Yusei won on the opponent's turn, after he had won out of cards and would have decked out on his next turn. The reason it is a missed CM is that Jean basically let Yusei win, all he had to do was end his turn to win, but "his spirit had been ignited" or whatever and he attacked to try and win by depleting Yusei's LP, and Yusei countered and won. Doesn't get more lame than making it clear the hero has lost, and they end up winning anyway because the villain suddenly has a last-minute brain fart and does something stupid. Doesn't help they try and spin it as some sort of spiritual awakening for Jean who up to this point has been an arrogant jackass.

Wanna know how they can easily get a true CM? Bring

I think it would be funny if all the percentages were still used like in the DM rules. ("Field terrain gives you a 30% boost!" giving me like...275 more points).

And yes, that come back against Strings!Marik was freaking awesome.

Oh, so the OCG didn't actually have any rules till the Battle City arc? So the cards were just out?

No, it did have rules. I'm saying, that by the time the OCG started, the Battle City rules were already in place in the manga, which made the real life game, and the manga card game, kinda parallel. So yeah.

What was really interesting was that, unlike now, where the cards are released, and then the anime showcased them, it was the opposite. At least for a majority of the series. The cards first appeared in the anime, and then they made the card real. Which was kinda cool, because you could say that the anime wasn't really trying to market the cards as much...the real cards were a consequence. Now, its not quite like that.

I haven't played it in some time. But for about 6 years (up until 2008) I was a summer daycamp counselor and I played with all the kids. It was fun, schooling the little kids with their newfangled cards with my (admittedly overpowered) original sets cards:monster:

I'm pretty sure my cards are in my room somewhere.

@Mako: holy shit really?

I have a Dragon deck and a Spellcaster deck. My Dragon deck was mostly tuned to directly counter my one friend's deck, which was tailored to beat mine. He had SO many trap cards...it was such a pain playing him. :P

Sounds like wubba bubba's old playing style.

I prefer a 'remove from play' deck.

Dragon's are extremely powerful now, provided you get Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon.

This card is probably the main heart of any good dragon deck. If you run one, you should try to find one. Which, coincidentally, is getting released to the masses who weren't able to get them via Shonen Jump, through the Absolute Powerforce special edition box.

@Lord Noctis

I also have a Macro Cosmos/Dimensional Fissure deck that runs one of my favorite monsters, Guardian Eatos.

I wish I had a Guardian Eatos. Honestly I'm not sure how good my deck is. All my previous decks got stomped at tournaments, but my dimension deck is stronger than any of my previous ones. I'm just not sure by how much.

Yeah all my dragon's are pretty old, lol.

And who/what's wubba bubba, Noctis? And given that I spent all my years playing kids I'm sure you'd both curbstomp me. Ever since my friend moved away anyway. He was the only one that really ever made me better.

wubba bubba is a new member on this site. he also happens to be one of my friends in my hometown. He used to like trap cards alot. He still does. (Hint:If you ever play him, don't fill up all of your own spell/trap slots. Thats what he wants you to do!)

I don't understand why they wouldn't show the cards in the anime first, then proceed to make the cards real. I mean, seeing the cards in action before they're actually released would pull my interest in for sure.

How many people here actually play the card game?
I used to, but I quit after I accidentally dropped my favorite card into a sewer. : (

I gave all my cards to my cousin, who ended up exchanging my deck for money with his little school friends.

I just went undefeated at locals today, so that's a definite "yes" for me :monster:
That is so cool.

What sort of decks do you guys favor?
I can't say for sure but I collected trap cards all the time.

Just back to the DM rules real quick, one thing I never understood (as if there were one) was that if the only way to damage your opponents life points were by attack a monster...what would happen if you didn't play a monster?
I even noticed that when I was a kid and didn't notice the other absurdities in the rules.

There was no direct attacking the player in Duelist Kingdom rules. However you were required to either play a monster, or draw and past your turn. Otherwise, it'd just be a stalemate until you decked out. That's why cards such as "Stop Defense," "Shadow of Eyes" and "Gorgon's Eye" were used so often in the anime. Because they had to have a way of making the opponent still take damage while they had no answers.
