@ fight with Loz: Oh wow, Tifa was defeated by a fucking Sephiroth remnant. She's such a fucking weakling. I must have missed the part where the rest of AVALANCHE totally managed to swat them like flies. Oh wait.

Let's not forget that Tifa more than held her own for the majority of that fight. Loz had to get a bit more serious and actually try, at least a little, before he took Tifa down.

ForceStealer

Double Growth
Let's just say FFVII employed something called show not tell, which 13 just completely fucking reversed to ridiculous extremes. Especially when it came to characters like Fang/Tifa.

I don't agree with this. XIII didn't tell it's story very well, I agree, but there is certainly more to Fang than looking cool. Probably the biggest facet of her character is the fact that she's willing to allow millions to die as long as it means Vanille will be safe. She does end up saving millions when it comes right down to it, but I think that's a pretty interesting quality for a hero in a Final Fantasy game.

I still prefer Tifa, but just because you have an almost irrational hatred for XIII doesn't mean Fang isn't a character.

NOT AMUSED
I don't have an irrational hatred for f13, it's very rational. It fails at almost every level.
Or, I should say, it fails at almost every level that I consider of utmost importance in any FF.
Probably the biggest facet of her character is the fact that she's willing to allow millions to die as long as it means Vanille will be safe.
Oh ok then, you have convinced me.

Are you fucking kidding me? Everything about the characters was one long list of grievances provided verbatim that were supposed to somehow make us "care". There were important relationships we read about instead of watching them unfold on screen and there were things that if I hadn't read or been told, I would have never picke dup because they. are. not. there. on. screen.
FFS, I'm not going to pretty much repeat the fucking Hope thread here again. And give me a fucking break. Just cause I dislike the work doesn't mean I'm frothing at the mouth, or that somehow there are no valid reasons to dislike it.

Characters are one of its weak points. Just because Fang is not as annoying as the rest doesn't mean she's awesome. Look, you can like shit man, that's fine. I like plenty of crap, just don't try to paint them as something they're not.

But everything about Fang's character was picked up on the screen. The intensity of the relationship with Vanille and her willingness to do whatever it takes is probably the most straightforward thing in the game. There are lots of issues where you need to pick up the datalog and figure it out. Fang is not one of them. Everything from her dialogue, her expositions, and visually show what she's all about.

Fang is a devil may care, comfortable with anything, and goes with the flow. But whenever it comes to Vanille, it conflicts with a strong passion and desire to keep her safe. This leads her to give no shits about Cocoon and willing to do anything to keep Vanille safe.

Fang went extreme because her situations are extreme. Why should she let the person she loves most suffer a fate worse than death for a bunch of assholes who fear and hunt her because they can't take the ten seconds to get their heads out of their asses and think for themselves. She wouldn't, until the very last minutes she says that while she promised to save Cocoon, she also promised to protect her family- and she has chosen Vanille. Fang is the only character that actually doesn't have to worry about her focus, but she's also the only one that is running head first in hopes to completing it.

It takes a lot for Fang to give up on relying on her focus. But she eventually does, Fang stops being stubborn and doing whatever her fate tells her to do and calm down, at the same time Vanille has to stop running away and ignoring her fate before they both can finally stop running after each other, work together, and save the world. Fang goes from trying to destroy the world despite Vanille's protests, to joining together with her to support it for eternity. And I got none of this from reading the datalog.

tl;dr, Fang was very clearly shown as a tough but devil may care woman, who would tear down the skies for her one person. Fang flip floppped the entire game on what should she do, but with Vanille she managed to temper that willingness to stay back and do what was right.

EDIT:

But I still chose Tifa, for other essay hueg reasons.

You know Splintered, reading your post proved something to me. That these two fabulous ladies have a shit ton in common.

What Vanille is to Fang is what Cloud is to Tifa and both of them are so dedicated to this person they love, it drives their character and makes them very likable.

OWD, I can see where you're coming from. I'm not the biggest FF13 fan and I couldn't really click with the characters the way I did with FF7.

But Fang is probably one of the select few in that game actually given a good characterization. I read nothing, tbh. I really couldn't be bothered because of my lack of interest in the characters. But Fang's devotion to Vanille was still really evident on screen, even to me.

One of the MANY reasons I adored Tifa was the fact she found her strength in a person she loved, the last person she had. That she was willing to put a stop to everything she believed in because that person needed her. It made her so human. I think a reason I liked Fang so much was because she shares that characteristic.

She loves Vanille and she'll do everything and anything to keep fighting for her. It made her awfully human, as well. Which is most likely why she outshone a lot of the FF13 cast, at least to me.

I still prefer Tifa by a long stretch but that doesn't mean Fang was a terrible character. It's just a matter of preference and who tugged my heart strings a lot harder. And Tifa's loneliness was just something I could identify with better.

Okay I want to say I thanked you OWD because I really dislike FF13, but on the other hand I still do like a lot of the characters, I think Lightning is really the only one I don't care for. In any case, even though I really like XIII's characters I will admit that they are very flat especially in comparison to other Final Fantasy characters. =( I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. In Fang's defense, I do not like her because "OMG SHE'S A LESBIAN > TIFA THAT SILLY HETERO". I think she has a certain charm about her, it's her general attitude. She was a strong character without trying too hard, I like how protective she is and how she acts as a guardian for Vanille. She's also smug without being a total bitch about it.

i just think fang has a much more charming personality
she's really passionate and funny

tifa kind of bores me

she and fang are both really dependent (story wise) on their love interests but fang still shines and makes a statement with her personality while tifa just blends in with the background

;-; wai zee wai.

OT: IDK, I thought Tifa was quite passionate and funny, imo. She bore a lot of the shit she went through with a smile and a strong facade. She became this pillar of strength for Cloud despite being broken and damaged herself as a character.

She was awfully passionate about her cause and her role in AVALANCHE. She was so full of rage when she saw her father die at the hands of Sephiroth and for years, that rage plagued her. Enough to make her want revenge against ShinRa.

When Cloud was down and out, she delivered this passionate speech about how she couldn't leave his side and how much of a hero he was to her.

Maybe in AC, she blended in the background, yeah. In FF7? Totally different character, imo.

She really stepped up to the plate after disc one and took an active role.

I found Tifa to be quite funny throughout the game, tbh. Her comment to Barret when you climb the stairs, the way she reacts when she finds out AVALANCHE was spying on her, calling Cloud's hair a chocobo. XD

Both girls were charming and charismatic imo.

This thread saw a lot of good debate, but it didn't prevent the vote itself from being a one-sided contest. Tifa won easily, picking up the most votes of anyone in the quarter-finals. I would also have voted for her if the votes had been tied.

disk one tifa was fine but then i just felt like the scrapped any unique personality in favor of her being cloud's crutch

which i guess was understandable for the OG but then the compilation just.....idk it's hard not to let it affect how i feel about her as a whole???

i don't hate tifa but idk i just lean towards like really expressive extroverted characters (i mean i like cersei.............) they interest me more

Yeah, I can understand that. AC Tifa was...idk, I didn't like it, either. I could see why they did what they did but I'd have much preferred it if Tifa did what she initially wanted to do. She wanted to go on some self discovering journey and I really wish she just did. She needed a break from Cloud and his issues and a chance to work on herself.

That's not true at all

it isn't until you find vegetable cloud that she becomes his crutch, and even then they don't "scrap" her personality for that

she doesnt have much of a storyline outside of cloud
hell nomura even says he uses tifa as a "window" to cloud who isn't very open so she's his mouthpiece too
they dont use her character for much outside of how it can benefit cloud

i do not find her particularly interesting but that's just like, my opinion man

I didn't hate Tifa in AC. I just...wish they did take her character in a different direction. In the movie, she was definitely made out to be more of a background character and I didn't like it because in FF7 she was at the forefront and.

IDK, I just wanted her to have her own badass journey an shit. This girl ran her own bar, actively participated in a rebel/terrorist group and kicked some serious ass her whole life. I miss that about her in AC. =( Even if it was what she really wanted, to be at peace and all. Still. *sigh*
