Oh ok then, you have convinced me.
Are you fucking kidding me? Everything about the characters was one long list of grievances provided verbatim that were supposed to somehow make us "care". There were important relationships we read about instead of watching them unfold on screen and there were things that if I hadn't read or been told, I would have never picke dup because they. are. not. there. on. screen.
But everything about Fang's character was picked up on the screen. The intensity of the relationship with Vanille and her willingness to do whatever it takes is probably the most straightforward thing in the game. There are lots of issues where you need to pick up the datalog and figure it out. Fang is not one of them. Everything from her dialogue, her expositions, and visually show what she's all about.
Fang is a devil may care, comfortable with anything, and goes with the flow. But whenever it comes to Vanille, it conflicts with a strong passion and desire to keep her safe. This leads her to give no shits about Cocoon and willing to do anything to keep Vanille safe.
Fang went extreme because her situations are extreme. Why should she let the person she loves most suffer a fate worse than death for a bunch of assholes who fear and hunt her because they can't take the ten seconds to get their heads out of their asses and think for themselves. She wouldn't, until the very last minutes she says that while she promised to save Cocoon, she also promised to protect her family- and she has chosen Vanille. Fang is the only character that actually doesn't have to worry about her focus, but she's also the only one that is running head first in hopes to completing it.
It takes a lot for Fang to give up on relying on her focus. But she eventually does, Fang stops being stubborn and doing whatever her fate tells her to do and calm down, at the same time Vanille has to stop running away and ignoring her fate before they both can finally stop running after each other, work together, and save the world. Fang goes from trying to destroy the world despite Vanille's protests, to joining together with her to support it for eternity. And I got none of this from reading the datalog.
tl;dr, Fang was very clearly shown as a tough but devil may care woman, who would tear down the skies for her one person. Fang flip floppped the entire game on what should she do, but with Vanille she managed to temper that willingness to stay back and do what was right.
EDIT:
But I still chose Tifa, for other essay hueg reasons.
