I’ll preface this by saying I agree with you, and I don’t like the affinity system either. I also don’t feel like I nit pick much. It’s more that certain things stick in my brain.

I suppose you can say the official relationship is not established but Tifa and Cloud nearly kiss well before the GS date. I would think that counts for something. Especially with Yuffie and Cait Sith on the other side of the door egging them on to kiss, where Aerith is right behind them.

So it’s not like Tifa put her feelings aside there.

My whole issue with it is not something I consider a character flaw for Aerith. It doesn’t make me have any issue with Aerith either. It’s just something that’s strange in the story to me.

I understand suspension of disbelief, but it’s hard for me to do that. They are friends and they like the same guy and yet the story shows no sort of crossover into Aerith and Tifa’s relationship. As far as I know it is only this scene:

If this scene didn’t happen, I don’t think I’d pay mind to it so much, and continue to suspend my disbelief. But this scene tells me that Tifa doesn’t like the idea of them being on a date. In the story Aerith goes on to continue to pursue Cloud and confess to him. So I’m only left to believe Tifa would not like it based on this moment the game showed me.

Like I said though, it has no impact to how I view Aerith it’s just something in the back of my head.

Not that I have seen as far as remake and the novels. In ToTP it explains that when the boys in the village got older she’d pretend she didn’t know they were coming on to her or when they were more overt she let them down as kind as she could.

Seeing that during the date, Aerith was checking in on Cloud regarding the CT misunderstanding in Kalm and Aerith advising Cloud to not take advantage of his relationship with Cloud, I wonder if Aerith was playfully teasing to make Tifa uncomfortable. So that Tifa would be more upfront with her feelings to Cloud. It felt like she was kinda being a wingman. Probably not the best way to do it, but it kinda read that way.

Yup pretty much. She likes to be the center of attention when young (that's her character flaw, the need to be liked) but it is properly explained in ToTP she's quick to put boundaries when the boys are starting to be too pushy.

And yes, when she realized her feelings for Cloud on the water tower, she never had any romantic feelings for anyone else. All the boys left for the city anyway and after the Nibelheim incident, she's more interested to know how to find food, money and where to sleep than boys lol.

That's something else that is imporant to factor in to this debate.

Yes, Aerith got multiple "non-optional 'dates'" throughout the game, but she spends both the Kalm date and the water tower "date" (I have no idea why people call this a date, it was the most unromantic thing ever, it's honestly more Cloti than Clerith) lamenting the fact that she doesn't have a relationship like Cloud and Tifa have with each other.

That's also how I saw the scene in the ghost trainyard, Aerith trying to encourage more daring behaviour from Tifa, because if not, then......wow Aerith, not cool.

Aerith also calls every hang out with her friends a date, so it's hard to take her seriously when it comes to that stuff anyway.

EDIT: unrelated to what I've said here but I just saw someone on twitter point out that Tifa saying "Just be ready to spill your guts" is foreshadowing the lifestream sequence. I don't know if I'm slow on the uptake and everyone's already noticed it, but since I haven't seen someone here mention it I just felt that I would bring it up.

I mean, the whole through line of them getting time alone to figure things out is one big flag for the Lifestream Segment. Everytime one of them says I just think “ooooooh boy, are you two ever gonna figure it allllllll out”

I guess that’s the risk they take with these kind of scenes lol.

Even with the Kalm bunker thing, for the most part I took from it that Cloud didn’t want Tifa to get the wrong idea it seems. I don’t know what other way I’m meant to take his reaction.

It honestly kind of annoys me that he didn't shake her off a bit sooner if he didn't want Tifa to get the wrong idea, like cmon Cloud!

Cloud also frowns in the yuffie GS date when Yuffie teases that Tifa may have forgotten about him after he left Midgar.

Aerith seems to be aware of something between CT and seems to support it. Which makes how she acts in the GS Aerith date and the dream date confusing. The only thing I can interpret from the GS date is when she said "him" (talking about Zack) it probably triggered her lingering feelings for Zack. And she got lost in the feelings of infatuation and got lost in the moment.

Here's a quote from the tumblr page

I have no idea how one can play Remake and Rebirth, and yet still come to this conclusion about Aerith. It's crazy. People are so toxic. I guess that's why these people create their own pages like that so they can create an echo chamber that goes unchallenged. Obviously CT are canon, but holy shit. These people are no different from the delusional CAs
