Square Enix trademarks Ever Crisis, The First Soldier, and Shinra logo in Japan

Well that was an interesting bit of news to come across.

Not much to go on, but I'm siding with the feeling that it isn't a new entry within the old compilation. People are struggling enough as it is with the Remake and how it all fits alongside the original - I personally can't see them suddenly making a new entry within the old compilation, especially when one of the Remake's purpose is to bring even more new fans into the fold. Especially more-so if the Remake is both a remake / sequel in disguise.

Logical thought is that EC is a remaster / collection.

First Solider is more interesting. Definitely could be either a side game or DLC connected to the Remake.

FFVII goes through cycles of intense activity and rest. Before the Remake, the last FFVII entry was back in 2009. So that's a period of 10 years it's had to "rest." I don't see how anyone expected the Remake to suddenly not awaken the beast from it's decade long slumber. It's popular as hell and more.

I don’t speak Japanese so I can’t verify this myself but somebody had pointed out on Reddit that “first soldier” is basically how “soldier first class” is written and spoken in Japanese...
EDIT: Brain malfunctions, I ended up having to edit this post multiple times.

Checking the Crisis Core script, the closest I am able to find is Hojo saying "SOLDIER First" but never "First SOLDIER".

It appears you disposed of all the samples.
I’ll have to accept you as a 1st.
全て処分してきたようだな。
ソルジャー1stとして認めざるを得んか。

ソルジャー1st = SOLDIER 1st

All other instances strip the term down to "1st Class" or simply "1st" if they don't use the full title "SOLDIER 1st Class". So I am yet to find an example of the term being written or even spoken as "1st SOLDIER".

So you’re saying the trademark really is “first SOLDIER” as in “the first of the SOLDIERS” rather than being a rank?

Lol yeah calling it now, free-to-play mobile trading card game
:hooboy:
Seriously though, the first soldier thing also reminds me of the enemy type in FF7R, the 3-C soldier operator...maybe in keeping with the AC, BC, CC, DC and potentially EC naming conventions, FC ends up meaning First Class?

Maybe it’s another one of those Nomura-isms like “Remake” having two meanings, where “The First Soldier” could mean both First Class AND the first of the Soldiers?

Though didn’t that article ultimately conclude that the franchise/Compilation canon is self-contradictory over whether Sephiroth was the first SOLDIER or not? And that the best way to reconcile the conflicting statements is interpret it as Sephiroth being the first “contemporary” type SOLDIER (i.e. Jenova cells and Mako bath treatment, instead of just the Mako bath treatment).

Part 2 having the subtitle Ever Crisis doesn’t really determine whether or not the Remake project is a “sequel” to the OG. It would be just a subtitle.
That's why I think it probably deserves a story of some kind giving a more definitive version of the events.

Yes. I think what X is actually eluding to is some FFVII Remake lore reveal about Sephiroth being the first SOLDIER and he assumed that the article would have been updated with this new info. Though I don't keep up to tabs with Remake lore and Ultimania translations enough to know where such a quote might be. :monster:

Am I on the right track, @X-SOLDIER ?

Sorta. :monster: That article is a good look at the things that currently exist, but there're some reasons that SE would be wanting to get into that stuff in more detail that Remake touches on, and what I've been looking into in what I'm currently writing.

If DC comics doesn’t own an exclusive right to the phrase, maybe SE will save Final Crisis (FC) for a post-Dirge sequel, and @X-SOLDIER ’s old speculative article can play out in some form.

I'll have to revisit my thoughts on those things at some point. :mon:

Here is the source of that news:

There's a bunch of random stuff along their known IPs (and LIVE A LIVE, Hmmm).
It seems they were all filed there during the past months. There's at least some manga titles there too.

Could be something, or nothing.
DLC titles? Whatever.
The type font seems the same among all those seemingly unrelated titles, so I guess that isn't important either.
Be aware, it all might be unrelated to FF7 (except for the suspicious bad quality Shinra logo).

I wouldn’t like the self-sacrifice route for Aerith but maybe they can pull something like that with Sephiroth, maybe he finally leaves Cloud alone after meeting his real mother or something. I dunno, ever since learning we fought the remnants of Sephiroth from Advent Children in the singularity, I’m convinced that a lot of the events of AC are going to be prevented in the future of the remake.

And they can get away with this without “retconning” AC and making it obsolete since the events of the movie would still be relevant to FF7R. I’m just thinking in terms of having a conclusive ending, Sephiroth is always going to come back to haunt Cloud so I feel like he has to be the one who drops the whole thing since killing him doesn’t seem to be enough.

...I mean he still has to die but like, stay dead.

Sephiroth using ore as a pronoun does not mean he's a good guy, holy shit lol

That's a reflection of his past Nibelheim personality and if anything that's more malevolent given the fact he's now fully lucid and embracing his desire to be a god. Sephiroth standing on a dead planet in the vacuum of space while mentally toying with Cloud is not indicative of any goodness whatsoever.

I'm not talking about the pronounce lol
In the EoC scene when Sephiroth holds out his hand to Cloud and asks him to help him, Cloud basically tells him to fuck off, you see for a little moment something in Sephiroth face that looks almost like disappointment/sadness which is a very weird thing for them to show us, why depict Sephiroth having a human emotion in the final scene between him and Cloud? That's the reason why I think we might have a Darth Vader situation here

I think it’ll be really hard to redeem Sephiroth after having him kill Aerith, Cloud’s mother, Tifa’s father, the residents of Nibelheim and damn near the whole planet but I could buy maybe one final act of kindness before his demise
