^^Actually, he gets captured by orcs from the elves and taken all the way to Mordor, from where he escapes/is let go and travels from there to Moria. That's when Gollem learned all about the Marsh and Shelob, etc.

Tolkien really need to work on making his stuff understandable without the "Ultimania". At least he doesn't have tones of ret-cons to worry about. :B

Sorry but that's actually wrong, you've either not read The Appendices with the events during LOTR or you have your timeline events mixed up.

Gollum met Shelob before he was captured and was found by Aragorn in the Dead Marshes when he was let go, Gollum ventured himself into Mordor by accident and was captured before he was found by Aragorn and Gandalf and after he met Shelob.

During the Council of Elrond, Legolas tells everyone that Gollum disappears after the Elves are attacked by Orcs in Mirkwood, Gollum's guard was killed and it appears the Orcs that attacked Mirkwood were there to 'rescue' him but it's never confirmed that they actually recaptured him even though there are signs he travelled with the Orcs, but he escapes from them at some point and is not taken back to Mordor, rather he goes to Moria supposedly to escape both the elves and Sauron's servants. Gollum also tells Frodo during TTT that he has been actually inside Mordor only once and it was by accident when Frodo asks him to lead them there.

Here's the extracts from the Appendices also concerning Gollum which confirm this.

2980:Gollum reaches the confines of Mordor and becomes aquainted with Shelob.

3009-3017: Gandalf and Aragorn renew their hunt for Gollum at intervals during the next eight years searching in the vales of Anduin, Mirkwood, Rhovanion to the confines of Mordor. At some time during these years Gollum himself ventured into Mordor and was caputured by Sauron

3017:Gollum is released from Mordor. He is taken by Aragorn in the Dead Marshes and brought to Mirkwood.

June 20 3018: Sauron attacks Osgiliath. About the same time, Thranduil is attacked, and Gollum Escapes.

August 3018
All Trace of Gollum is lost. It is thought that at about this time, being hunted both by the Elves and Sauron's servants, he took refuge in Moria; but when he had at last discovered the way to the West-Gate he could not get out.

Yeah, makes sense, plus sensational titles draw more people to the cinemas :monster:. Also, neat tie-in with the LotR trilogy (or the climax of that, anyway. I mean erm, one of the climaxes, lol. LotR is so awesome, fuck the hobbit).

Inside Information...

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

I wish they had renamed it "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies". They could have had only two "the" instead of three.

At least it doesn't give away the ending like Return of the King does. It's actually a very good summary of what most of the 3rd movie is.

hnnng. But please god no more barrels! D:

Actually I think I know where at least one of those extra scenes is going to be
There is obviously some sort of party/event in Lake Town - whatever leads to Bofur getting drunk and being late for the boat. Should be interesting. Kind of sad they missed out Bilbo's cold though 'thag you very buch'

Only if that box set also contains a version where it's just one 3-hour movie where they cut out all of the extra bits / filler, :monster:

I want there to be an extended version for all three movies, so I can take one fullday and watch the three Hobbit movies followed by the Lord of the rings movies.... this is my ultimate Tolkien fantasy and will have my fantasy!

This is why I really want them to release an official box set, and slightly tweak the opening of Fellowship, and the CGI for Gollum (since it's the film with the lowest budget, and it needs to be a bridge between The Battle of the Five Armies & Two Towers).

Absolutely not. The Fellowship was the best film in the series and I'm convinced at least part of that is related to the decreased reliance on/wanking to CG. There's a correlation there at any rate. Fellowship got the spirit of the books the most.

I'm specifically referring to the fact that the opening has a different version of the "finding the One Ring" scene that we've now actually seen in AUJ, and Gollum looks completely different than he does in AUJ, T³, or RotK which makes it really disconcerting. He's all gangly and black and weirdly skeletal, and as the fourth film to suddenly have those two things be totally visually different in an otherwise seamlessly interconnected series of films seems like it would be worth updating, because it stands out really badly when watching the films straight through.

^^I notice that every time I see LOTR and it bugs me. Especially when the fix wouldn't be that hard competitively.

Ohhh, the One Ring thing. Yeah, that bothers me too. I immediately noticed that when watching the first Hobbit film and it bothered me. I can't even come up with an excuse for it.

Gollum is fine, though.

PJ already said he might plan something like that for a possible ultimate box set. He also said he'd still include the original versions if he ever were to tweak his old movies. :awesomonster:

That's the sort of BluRay box set that I'm holding out for. Haven't bought any of the films since my parents got me the extended edition DVDs of the LotR films. I have the patience to only buy them the one and ultimately final time.
