Medals

Throughout the course of the online mode, players could acquire Medals. New medals were continuously added with version updates. In the 2006 era, 24 medals were available from August 17 and here is what that complete collection looked like.

Medals acted only as trophies/achievements/collectibles, though you could collect multiple copies of one and the same medal. It is unknown if it was possible to sell medals for gil.

The beta testing phase, which lasted from September 22 to October 31 in 2005, also had 24 medals. Some of these medals carried over to the 2006 era, most did not.

Medals: 2005 β Version

Documentation on the medals of the beta testing phase is more scarce than its 2006 counterpart, but we can be thankful for what we do possess.

We have snapshot evidence of seven medals and confirmed medal names and descriptions for six medals. In a Japanese chat room from October 2005 it is claimed that the beta version had nine medals you could acquire.

The 2005-era medals that we do have screenshot evidence of (see below) are placed in a slightly different order than their 2006 counterparts.

A list of all 24 supposed medals exist. While the game didn’t allow you to acquire this many, a bug made the menu display all possible medals. Here are translations for the medals that were available and those that were locked away.

Disgrace Medal
A medal of disgrace awarded to the player with the most deaths.

The 2006 version called this the “BT Disgrace Medal” and the description also specified that the medal was gained via the Deathmatch mode.

First Attack Medal
A medal awarded to the first player to defeat an enemy.

In 2006, this medal icon was used for the “First Flag Medal” which was awarded to the first player to retrieve a flag.

Ironman Medal
A medal awarded to players who finishes the match with no deaths.

Medal icon was used for the “Assault Medal” in 2006, under a different description and a different requirement for gaining it.

4 Healer Medal
A medal awarded to the player who makes the greatest contribution to healing companions.

5 Assault Medal
A medal awarded to the player who infiltrated the defeated team’s base and brought upon the victory.

Slayer Medal
A medal awarded to the player with the most enemy kills.

Finisher Medal
A medal of glory awarded to the player who ends the match.

Called “Team Order of Merit” in 2006.

8 Seeker Medal
A medal awarded to the player who obtains all of the Mako capsules during battle.

That is, the player who obtains all of the Mako capsules on their own.

9 Complete Victory Medal
A medal awarded to a team that achieves a perfect victory in TBT mode.

BT Conquest Medal
A medal awarded to the player who dominates in BT Mode.

In 2006, this medal was reworked into the “BT Domination Model” and got a redesign.

11 FA Clear Medal
A medal awarded to the player who infiltrates the base and destroys the core in FA mode.

12 Survival Medal
A medal awarded to the player who successfully occupies the area for a long period of time in FA mode.

13 Trooper’s Order of Merit
A medal awarded to the player who achieves exemplary performance as a Trooper.

14 Heavy Infantry’s Order of Merit
A medal awarded to the player who achieves exemplary performance as a Heavy Infantryman.

15 Sniper’s Order of Merit
A medal awarded to the player who achieves exemplary performance as a Sniper.

16 Mage’s Order of Merit
A medal awarded to the player who achieves exemplary performance as a Mage.

17 Grappler’s Order of Merit
A medal awarded to the player who achieves exemplary performance as a Grappler.

By “Grappler” hand-to-hand (melee) combat is implied.

18 Turks Badge
A badge to indicate that you are a member of the Turks.

No version of the online mode ever allowed you to become a member of the Turks. Was this badge only meant as a reward for clearing a mission related to the Turks, or were there plans for the player to actually join the Turks?

19 Drone Class Badge
A badge to indicate that you have achieved Drone Class.

The odd thing about this badge is that every player starts out as a Drone Class soldier, with no examination needed to get there. Ergo, every player should have this medal/badge by default but there is no sign of it in screenshots.

20 Tsviet Badge
A badge to indicate that you have become a Tsviet.

21 General Class Badge
A badge to indicate that you have achieved General Class.

22 Commander Class Badge
A badge to indicate that you have achieved Commander Class.

During beta, you could only advance from Drone to Scout and finally to Trooper. The Commander, General and Tsviet classes were unavailable to you.

23 Trooper Class Badge
A badge to indicate that you have achieved Trooper Class.

24 Scout Class Badge
A badge to indicate that you have achieved Scout Class.

Research Notes

Link to the chat room that lists all 24 medals of the beta version.

– When we do not have screenshots of the medal names and descriptions (which is the case for most medals), the final names and descriptions used are a combination of multiple online sources. The two main sources for the 2006 medals are Shera’s blog and the FFCheats guide. These two conflicting sources are compared in the following Google Docs Spreadsheet.

In Michui’s play diary, it is mentioned that the medal “Emblem of the Black Wings” could be purchased for 42000 gil. It is unknown if this price tag was for the medal ONLY, or if the medal was gained by paying for TSV Pullum to clear the mission against Nero on your behalf.
