Script Comparison: PS English <-> PC English
Currently there is no single document that compares all of the used English PlayStation text and the used English PC text. BrutalAl however has compiled an Excel document where all the field files are compared in five lengthy tabs.

Because the document contains a great deal of duplicate text, as this is how the field text of FFVII was organized to a huge extent, it is not very convenient to browse through. For this reason I have created a smaller “sample” Excel document, where both bigger and smaller examples of textual differences are shown.

Summary
Many of the script edits made for the English PC port can be summarized in bullet points.
• Some translation and grammar errors have been amended, but far from all of them. In a few spots, new textual errors pop up in the PC port.
• To adjust from the PlayStation controller to the keyboard, buttons now carry different terms.

• Fewer profanities are now written out. Some have been completely removed, others have been replaced by grawlixes (@#$%). Far from all cases have been removed though and there are still plenty of obscenities like “shit” and “damn”.
• Barret’s slang has been toned down in places or simply been rewritten. In particular, “awright” is not usually replaced with “alright”. There are fewer cases of Barret saying “yo”. Though the cases of Barret saying “foo” were few already in the PS version, all those instances were removed for the PC port.
• Similarly, Cait Sith’s accent and slang has been greatly toned down, often making his lines look very ordinary.
• Ellipses (…) have been greatly reduced. It is now much more rare to see six or more dots in line.
• The game script is now way more consistent with capitalization. Examples of words that now begin more often with a capital letter: Planet, Materia, Chocobo & Condor.
• Heidegger’s “Gya ha ha” and Scarlet’s “Kya ha ha” were laughters present in the PlayStation version, but they still had many cases of simple “ha ha” laughs. In the PC port, almost each instance of them laughing now have their respective “Gya” and “Kya” cues.

What follows is a list of both big and mundane differences in the field script. Text tables are shown before images to provide context. In the tables PlayStation text is on the left column and PC text on the right column. If the text is identical between versions, there is only one column.
Whenever there is a table with Japanese text in it, the column to the right of it is a fan translation of the Japanese script.

Technically “Let’s go” is the more direct and correct translation. The change to “see ya” might have been to emphasize that Cloud is going in alone, whereas “let’s go” can be interpreted as both of them entering the inn.
The two versions disagree on whether multiple things or only one thing of Don Corneo’s should be chopped/ripped/smashed. Due to the context in the Japanese script not being clear enough, it is unknown what part of Corneo’s manhood is referred to. Because of this both the singular and plural forms can be deemed as correct translations.

In the English PlayStation release, this is the only time that Heidegger’s department is referred to as that of “Public Safety Maintenance”. In the Shinra HQ library, on the 62nd floor, his department is called “Peace Preservation” as well “Public Order”. With the PC port, the former term in the library and the lines spoken in Don Corneo’s mansion match up.
The literal meaning of Heidegger’s department (治安維持部門) is “Public Order Maintenance Department” or “Security Maintenance Department”.
Translator’s/Squall_of_SeeD’s notes: Personally, I would go with something like “Peacekeeping Department” or “Peacekeeping Force Division.” That is taking some liberties, I admit, though “public order maintenance”/治安維持 is halfway a match for the kanji in “peacekeeping” (平和維持).
For context’s sake, I’ve seen the Peacekeepers from “The Hunger Games” variously referred to in Japanese as “Peacekeeping Force” (平和維持部隊), “Peacekeeping Army” (平和維持軍), “Peacekeeping Corps” (平和維持隊), “Peacekeeping Organization” (平和維持組織) and “Peacekeeping Operation” (平和維持活動).
If you want to be true to the kanji, you have to go with something stupid like “Public Order Maintenance Department” or “Security Maintenance Department.”

In the PC port Heidegger almost never has a normal “ha ha ha” laugh, as most of these instances have been changed to his signature “gya ha ha” laughter. A touching confession of Cloud’s honest concern for Barret is downplayed into a mere “we need your help” in the second translation. Like the fan translation shows, the original translation actually got it right, meaning that Cloud’s concern is canon.

The original translation calls the elder “Bugah”, but the PC port calls him “Bughe”. Both are legitimate translations of his Japanese name (長老ブーガ) but from different points of view.

“Bugah” better reflects the katakana used and their pronunciation (ブーガ; “Buuga”) while the spelling of “Bughe” better reflects the pun that Elder Bugah and Elder Hargo’s (ハーゴ; “Haago”) names are based off each half of Bugenhagen’s name (ブーゲンハーゲン; “Buugenhaagen”).

FFVII contains a lot of unused duplicate text in its data, though some pieces differ slightly from their used counterpart. In the duplicate text for the PC version, Cid has an unused version where the word ‘butts’ is included.

A ‘corral’, also known as a ‘pen’, is an enclosure for holding livestock (sheep, cows, horses etc). The correct name for this area of FFVII would be ‘Coral Valley’, as the environment is meant to be like coral reefs being above water. The PC port made the mistake though of instead of just removing one letter, they changed the ‘a’ to an ‘e’. Of course this is problematic because now the Coral Valley becomes geographical misnomer for Corel, which is actually on a completely different continent (see Corel Desert, North Corel).

In the original English translation, Ifalna will at first refer to the crisis from the sky as an “it” but then switches to consistently refer to the entity as “he” or “him”. All instances of “he/him” are changed to “it” in the PC version. The Japanese script uses a genderless pronoun, ergo the PC version is the one more faithful to the original script.

In light of Tseng’s confirmed survival in Advent Children (released in 2005) many have treated the more ambiguous line in the PC port as a sign of Elena knowing Tseng to be alive, but wounded. This deems the phrase “messin’ my boss up” as more correct than “doin’ my boss in“. While it is true that the PC version is closer to the Japanese line, it is false here to assume that there was intentional ambiguity in the phrase and that Elena knew of Tseng’s survival.
With the release of the Shinra chapter in the full “On the Way to a Smile” novel (released in 2009), it is clearly expressed that Elena and the other Turks were convinced of Tseng having died.

They had received reports that Tseng had died several days ago. Elena had acted on her own, pursuing Cloud and his party to the Northern Crater to take revenge. However, she failed and returned to Midgar in a bad state and they remembered how she repeated the word “revenge” like she was under a spell afterwards. In short, every member of the Turks thought Tseng had died.

From this perspective, it appears that Tseng was canonically dead until retroactive resurrection for Advent Children in 2005.

Yet again we find a random error in the PC translation. When Holzoff asks if the team has ever heard of those who tried to climb the cliff, the change from “30” to “20” in the PC port will be apparent if you select that you have not heard this story. Selecting that you are familiar with the stories yields text entries where only the correct time gap of thirty years is referred to.

While the Japanese text refers to Corel, not Mideel, the script edit for the PC port accidentally makes more sense. Corel is after all not on an island southeast of where Chocobo Sage is.
The retranslation reveals that there is an important distinction here between multiple areas. Good Chocobos are found southeast of Gold Saucer, in the Corel Area. Great Chocobos are found near Mideel and west (or rather, northwest) of Corel, just north of Rocket Town.
