New information on FFXIV was revealed in the latest issue of Famitsu. And it appears this FF MMORPG is going to be one that breaks the mold.

Some interesting points include:

Final Fantasy XIV revolves around character growth. There will be no experience points or leveling system this time around, and a new system will come in to play. Square Enix wants to deliver an experience where new players have the freedom to try out any quest and many different things, growing naturally from their experiences. A deep story will be in tact in Final Fantasy XIV, including cut-scenes, but they’re going beyond that by also delivering a wider variety of stories and quests. They want players to enjoy the process of character growth.

Jobs were the lasting appeal of Final Fantasy XI. They want to utilize that concept, but stack more on top of it. The focus will be on weapons, determining how you play, grow, and fight. They’ll be expanding upon the basic job system. He says this also explains the Final Fantasy XIV logo, which features weapons sticking out of the name.

The main idea for Final Fantasy XIV is to provide freedom of growth through the variety of quests offered. However, players can meet up with friends and set off on adventure or they can play solo. Players won’t be left with nothing to do, bored.

A MMORPG with no level grinding? Can it be? That definitely sounds like a game I’d love to play. You can read more information on the setting of this game in the above article. It certainly looks like S-E is learning a lot from their previous installment, FFXI.

It sounds to me like they’re really going out of their way to make a good game. Yesterday, I would’ve said that TOR was the only mmo I was excited about. FFXIV just found itself on that same list.

Nevertheless, it’ll still be grind. WoW, for example, is grind twofold – first you grind your way to level 80 (or w/e), then you have to grind at one of the professions (such as blacksmithing), grind the instances, grind in PvP events, and then grind some more, but instead of for a level, you’ll grind for better gear slash equipment.

Which is probably what this’ll be too. I can’t imagine a mumorpeger without grind – any and all MMO’s are designed to keep the player occupied and playing for as long as humanly possible. If they’d make the majority of the game story-based (in more than three paragraphs for a quest intro and epilogue), they’d have to hire an enormous amount of staff and writers and stuff – and WoW already has a large amount of those.

Still, I’m curious to see what they’ll come up with.

will they incorporate level system like in FFII? because most of its leveling system depends on weapon, so as FFII
