FFVII 15th Anniversary Interviews: Tetsuya Nomura

by August 17, 2012 0 comments

Hitoshura does his miracle translations yet again and provides the interview with Tetsuya Nomura found in Famitsu issue no. 1224. Read about Nomura’s rise in the ranks of Square and his involvement with the development of Final Fantasy VII. This story is familiar for veterans but perhaps even those readers will find new details in this article?

I also wrote a comment for the Kitase interview and I have some more corrections for you to consider:

    1. “*You later left the company* and went independent, but I hope we can keep on working together still in the future.”

This isn’t exactly wrong information but Nomura didn’t actually say that. He said “You founded your own company (kaisha wo tachiageru)”. Especially at the beginning, despite now being freelance Nojima almost exclusively worked for SE and even now that he’s doing work for different devs he still kept working for SE. So it probably doesn’t feel like Nojima left to Nomura. At least Nomura doesn’t talk about him leaving, rather appreciating Nojima’s accomplishment of having founded his own company. It should read:

“*You later founded your own company* and went independent, but I hope we can keep on working together still in the future.”

    2. “Unlike in “VI” where with the inclusion of *a* ninja and *a* gambler I was given charge of the stories for Shadow and Setzer”

Since it were Nomura’s proposals it makes more sense to use “my” instead of the vague “a”:

“Unlike in “VI” where with the inclusion of *my* ninja and *my* gambler I was given charge of the stories for Shadow and Setzer”

Thank you greatly for your input Kay Hermann. Your input has been considered and entered into the articles, as well as been highlighted in our forum:

I speak on behalf of the translator, Hitoshura, and can inform that the only comment he disagrees with is the 4th one on the Kitase interview. Quoting what he told me:
“The only one I have resistance over is the 4th point in Kitase’s, about Nojima making the/some of the event scenes. But the way I read it was that he did all the event scenes for the ‘mystery’ bits, and perhaps with my own reading in mind while translating it I assumed it would come across that ‘the actual scenes’ in this case were those relating to this mystery Nojima worked on. I don’t know if ‘some’ comes across as if he didn’t do all of those scenes himself.”

Thanks again for your input and immense sense of detail. =)

Wow, FFVII was probably Nomura’s favorite project out of all of them, and, seriously, I can’t blame him since it took forever to make such a good story and game and series now. I do hope that a new title for the Final Fantasy VII Compilation and a remake of Before Crisis-Final Fantasy VII are on the company’s list after Kingdom Hearts 3, Final Fantasy XV and Bravely Second.
