Wow, that’s something else. I’m not sure if I like everything there, but I like the play on Red being man and beast.

Also, why is Vincent suddenly the AVALANCHE psychiatrist? I really like the thought of those two laughing, Yuffie hugging him too. Nojima really loves Yuffie and Vincent, doesn’t he?

    Thanks a lot!

I really loved this one. Imagining Vincent and Red XIII laugh that loud is just so endearing and hilarious.

Thank you so much for this translation! I loved the bits where Yuffie hugs Nanaki and where Vincent and Nanaki laugh.

    Thanks again!

Whatever happened to meeting the others? Ah well. Thanks for this, I always wondered how Red XIII would feel with such a long life span.

Reading this story, it gives the impression that Nanaki is traveling the world for the first time. Even his ride on Cid’s airship seemed something new to him.
And this is ridiculous. It’s like his journey during FFVII didn’t happen at all.

You seem to forget the first time he travelled the world he was fighting to save it from various threats. He had no time to simply appreciate the wonders of life. This time around he is not under any such stress, he can simply lay back and whatch the world around him.

This story was about as interesting as watching paint dry.

So this was the two years between FF7 and AC, right? For some reason I had been under the impression that it was going to take place after DoC, but Geostigma seems pretty new.

Heh, I got a kick out of Vincent’s method of clearing out the hut! “I gave them a little scare. I transformed.”

And the image of him and Nanaki laughing is precious also.

There do seem to be some grammatical issues though, and some of the lines that were translated before on the forums seem less clear in this version.

I never really thought about Nanaki & Vincent having so much in common – long lives, and the issues with being somewhat beast and human. There’s a lot of really good depth to the characters in this story. It’s also interesting how he does and doesn’t understand Yuffie. This made me wonder what a game in the FFVII world would be like long after the other characters are gone. It would be a familiar, yet distant and strange world.

Well…. you would probably have Nanaki…and Vincent would still be alive..
But a true answer: We actually do know what that world looks like. Final Fantasy Tactics (the original one) takes place on Gaia (the PLANET), it seems to take place at least 1000 years later. and you find materia and can use a time machine to summon Cloud from the past.

You see a scene with what is basically a reborn Aerith if you do that :3.

The machine that brought Cloud to Tactics’ world was said to be capable of transferring people through both time and space (direct quote: “transportation across dimensions – across the very fabric of time and space”), though, so it’s not neccessarily the case that Tactics is on Gaia’s world.

Also, it’s not a materia that activated the machine; it was a Zodiac Stone.

He is correct that you can find Materia as a quest reward in FFT, though. But you can also get cameo items from the other games too, and FFT, Vagrant Story, and the rest of the Ivalice alliance all take place on the same world, which grows more mundane over time.

It was hinted that FFX was related to FFVII, and later outright confirmed that FFX is a distant prequel of FFVII (think millenia distant) to FFVII.

The Al Bhed Shinra (Yep) discovers that the farplane can be extracted as an energy source, however they are not successful in doing so. Thousands of years later, the Al Bhed have developed space travel, and arrive on Gaia, where they ARE successful in extracting mako energy.

On a related note, this Al Bhed space travel technology is what Cid Highwind used to create the Shera.

Its just nice to see this translation and Vincent laughing with Nanaki is really sweet. They both share the same fate in the end. Living so long and seeing all the people you care go one after another is a painful thing. Thanks for the translation.

Oh man I love the ending! Totally reminded me of Hob and Dream in the Sandman. And gratzi for the translation. This has to be my favorite case, unless of course there’s a Case of Vincent on the horizon. *crosses fingers*

Great novella,it’s a shame they don’t explore nanaki even more I don’t care if it’s ritten only (as apparently is fur is hard to animate,on the other side I would like to see vincent laugh never saw that since hojo experimented on him),exploring is feelings… just awesome.

This is the best story I’ve ever read. You know, I’ve thought much of all the things Nanaki and Vinny have in common – Nanaki will live for hundreds of years, and Vincent is an immortal. Also the part where Nanaki went wild and almost killed a man, that’s quite much like Vinny when Chaos takes over his mind. And both of them are quiet, deep, serious and both have suffered – Vincent because of Lucrecia and all that, Nanaki because he lived for almost fifty years thinking his father was a coward, and that filled him with shame, also a kind of suffering. Really good story, even though the thought of Vincent laughing and being happy actually scares me. But it’s so cute, and I’m sure Vincent has a lot more feelings than he wants anybody to know. ‘I gave them a little scare. I transformed.’ You’re so good Vinny! Haha, those guys will have nightmares for the rest of their lives xD I really do hope there will be a Case of Vincent… I would love that.

    “Gilligan, huh?”

Now sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip…

I just can’t help but think of that song…

I believe that Vincent laughs at Gilligan for a simple reason.
Vincent holds Gillian beast inside himself.
